Alternative rock was just rock that wasn’t main stream. College radio would play indie bands and Alternative Rock came from there.

Saw these guys play a free show at Tate Student Center at UGA right after this record was released. They argued about whether they were going to play this song. The singer did NOT want to play it, but it was their big breakthrough hit at the time. Hilarious. However, they were really good live! Lot's of fun.

I'm not sure what I'd call this. It's like pop/alternative, as much of an oxymoron as that is. It definitely got plenty of radio and MTV time, and it's a good, catchy song. I like the drums. The snare is brutal in this mix.

Doug Hopkins (guitar) & Robin Wilson (singer) wrote nearly every song on this album. Hopkins had some personal & drinking problems. The band tried everything to work things out. But Doug was out of control and they were forced to let him go. This was basically their debut album and it EXPLODED when it came out. HUGE. They were one of the biggest bands in the world. And shortly thereafter, Doug committed suicide. I remember reading The Gin Blossoms/ Rolling Stone interview back in 1993ish, Robin said he always thought he & Doug would be the Tyler & Perry (Aerosmith) of the 90s. Still, to this day, makes me sad. This album & these guys were something else.

This was power pop, which became alternative only in relation to formulaic and dance pop or pop ballads. It was influenced by music that should've been popular music because it was powered by hooks, but somehow didn't catch on with the mainstream despite it's catchiness. Like The dB's, Marshall Crenshaw or Squeeze. In order to fit in with the grunge era, power pop bands like Posies, Gin Blossoms or Lemonheads would overdo the loud guitars.

HOLY SHIT. I WAS NOT EXPECTING YOU GUYS TO DO "HEY JEALOUSY." ❤ This is one of my Top 20 FAVORITE songs of the 90s. This was a love at first listen for me, 32 1/2 years ago when I was in my mid-20s. So glad you guys did this!! "Hey Jealousy" was Gin Blossoms' VERY FIRST SINGLE, and it is my ALL-TIME FAVORITE song by them. The next Gin Blossoms song you should do is the VERY NEXT single, "Found Out About You," which is almost as good as "Hey Jealousy" and my 2nd favorite song by them. Other GREAT 90s non-Grunge Alternative Rock songs you guys should do are "Low" by Cracker, both "Open Up Your Eyes" (live version especially) and "If You Could Only See" by Tonic, "Cumbersome" by Seven Mary Three, "6th Avenue Heartache" and "One Headlight" by The Wallflowers (which is still led by Bob Dylan's son Jakob), "Possum Kingdom" by The Toadies, "Good" by Better Than Ezra, "Ready To Go" by Republica, "Fields Of Joy," "Always On The Run," "What The...Are We Saying" and "Are You Gonna Go My Way" by the genius Lenny Kravitz and "You Get What You Give" by New Radicals. (There are many other great '90s Alternative Rock songs, but these are what I can remember for now.) 😁

Aside the fact this album came out in a great year! 😉 I know I mentioned before I did not listen to Alternative/90's music back then. When alternative/grunge came out - my brain back then said 😝. However, Gin Blossoms and Sugar Ray were my exceptions. I wore this cd out! I went out to Washington the summer of 1994, and this is one of the primary cds we listened to cover to cover. I agree their songs were sad in nature and lyrics, but musically were upbeat... Good pick. Not surprised you liked it. But understand why it's not in the top tier. That was probably the biggest hit besides Until I Fall Away... 🎉❤

I've heard OF the band but I'm not sure if I've actually heard a song by them, either, until now. Thanks to this one, though, I heard enough to know that I could definitely handle another round or two of Gin, lol. The album title--"New Miserable Experience"--is a perfect one for an alt rock band,😂, especially in light of Nick's comments.

Hi Guys! I know we are not your target audience by a long shot, LOL, but please throw us old-timers a bone now and then. May I suggest a throw back to Ambrosia: "I Just Can't Let Go" or "Holdin' On to Yesterday". Thanks! Cheers from Canada.

The Gin Blossoms were a hard driving hard working band working the eastern US States in the 80s/90s. They got signed and While the Debut was massive, the band had started imploding even before they released it. Doug Hopkin was the co-writer on all of the material, and his style was the blueprint for the band ( listen to the other songs they have the same guitar strumming/picking patterns) but he wasn't a beneficiary of their success. He either drank himself to death or committed suicide, and the quality of the material dipped considerably without his creative input. Doesn''t take anything away from this album, its chock full of winners. This one and Found Out About You were the radio mainstays, but I personally thing Until I fall Away is the best song on the album. They captured lightning for a while, but like the expression goes those who shine twice as bright burn half as long.

I searched your channel for some Van Morrison, didn't see any. Please do "Domino" the original recording, not the live Midnight Special version.
@alchemy-oi8xf2 ай бұрын
ANYTHING from Van Morrison, please, lol. (Thanks for bringing him up, Terri.) For starters, "Into the Mystic", "Moondance", "Tupelo Honey", and "Caravan". While I know that the 502 favors studio recordings--and I respect and agree that that's the way a person should first experience a song--occasionally, though, a live version just hits it out of the park. So, if you ever decide to react to "Caravan", I'd strongly suggest the Live at the Last Waltz video. It's absolutely the supreme version, and one of Van's most legendary performances.

I love how this song makes some of the chords sound elastic, like one is springing after the other. No clue what the technical term for that is, but love it in every song I've ever found it in. FYI, the term "alternative rock" never really meant anything other than being against the formulaic, overproduced sound of '80s music. Gin Blossoms is too folksy for the label anyway.
