You can also make this more secure by switching up the index. For example you could set a=5 or h=12, etc

There is no difference. It's just a different method.

Vigenere cipher is when u arrange the key letter below plain text letters and use this C=(p+k) mod26 to encrypt each letter. But this method and your method has different answers

You could use letters instead of numbers with each letter indicating the ROT scheme
