It doesn’t always matter that the situation gets ugly as they head to court because media gives them coverage either way, and thereby that person’s face is usually plastered on the news for the rest of the world to see. That’s a step in the right direction, if you ask me. Law enforcement should at least look into the information given them by these groups!

Civilians ... because people CANNOT learn the law and understand procedure and statutory requirements. What are police (who are not doing their job for children) before they become officers?

95% of ALL criminal cases end with a plea-bargain. Any jurisdiction that doesn't want to accept these cases is probably overwhelmed in the criminal courts as it is. They can barely keep up with the arrests that law enforcement officials are bringing to the District Attorney's office. The last thing the DA's office wants to deal with is another row of filing cabinets filled with arrests. When the pro-active community is told that their efforts are not appreciated they are being told that they will actually have to take justice into their own hands. you have to think long and hard to guess how many more are there for each person that is caught and exposed.

In some states the police have to initiated the sting. If they admit to cp then they can arrested.

The problem is, if the groups (yeah, NOT vigilante groups, honestly, shame on them for applying this label) did not work to protect kids it wouldn't happen at all. Cops are not doing enough - not even close. If they cops said "if you do this, this is the protocol for it" - they would get more prosecutable cases. I can understand, they don't want the public to feel like the police are encouraging "citizens to do cop work in general" but in the case of child predators is different. ENOUGH IS NOT BEING DONE TO PROTECT KIDS
