Have you figured out yet that I love VoicePlay? I've been saving this one for a while since it came out, and I finally had the chance to tackle "Valhalla Calling" - especially given the original composition is from my good friend Gavin Dunne aka the Miracle of Sound! I am familiar with Assassins Creed, and have seen Kirk playing through this one specifically, but more than anything is the music. I'm excited to see how this composition goes!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to VoicePlay performing "Valhalla Calling" from Assassin's Creed for the first time.

Great vid, Elizabeth 🙂 Writing a song that so many people want to cover has been a wild, bumpy journey. It has had upsides and also a few downsides; both in the business realm and in the more creative & personal realm. It has at times been a lot for a 100% independent creator to learn about & deal with, lol. But for me the good parts have mostly outweighed the not-so-fun parts, due to the simple joy of having inspired people. My 2020 Nordic folk-inspired original version will always be my favorite as I have such an emotional attachment to it, but the Voiceplay cover was definitely one of the most creative & interesting ones I heard

Eli has become the Asgardian god of rock, Layne is a beatboxing god, Cesar has become a Berserker, and J None has shown us that rap indeed belongs in acapella! Never heard of VoicePlay but I'm interested! Love this song in all its variations; I love their harmonies. A big fan of Pentatonix too. Yes, I'm 63 and I still go camping in the summer "dressed like that" as my parents used to say. I heard if you're not grown up by 50, you don't have to. I'm goin' with it! I am glad to see someone (and many more in the comments) enjoy this version. I was just in a rabbit hole of people who decried it as "inauthentic" so this is a nice palete cleanser. Really, we know that all modern "Viking" is clearly ahistorical...and we do have a roughly contemporary Scandinavian song (from 1300...so a little too late) with musical notation in only one case that I know of (called "Drømde mik en drøm i nat"). It sounds sort of "typically medieval" with no drums, no throat singing, nothing very unusual. Really the question is "Is this a good song" which this take on Valhalla Calling clearly is.

I absolutely love the creative risks VoicePlay is taking. Tackling some of these songs has really pushed the envelope for them and it shows just what they're capable of individually and as a group. Go back and listen to some of their songs when Eli first started and compare them to now--WOW. They were always great, but here lately they've been adding the exclamation points not just vocally but with set design, arrangement, costuming, etc. And credit to their hidden member Ed Boyer for his mixing genius.

Geoff down to a B zero several times, Eli blasting that intense rock tenor and stretching his voice way up, Layne extending his vocal percussion, Cesar showing some grit and ability to belt, and J-None rapping. It’s like they figured out what each person’s most badass thing they could pull off and made an arrangement with it all. “Ear Candy” galore, their most intense song and I’m ready run through a wall. It's fun to watch you get so overwhelmed with some of the songs you watch. I really enjoy Geoff. His base is always amazing.

How much you love voice work really comes through. You are actually giddy when they play with the voices, harmonies and techniques. You have a complete geek out and it is a joy to see.

I'm enjoying this on so many levels. I'm listening twice so I can really absorb what's happening here with the production and mixing. So well done..

The best breakdown on the internet that I have heard. It is easy to miss something I. This very complex rendering of the song and to have all the elements picked up, only increases my appreciation of this version. This technical breakdown, along with the personal reaction, normally one or the other, is by far the best on the internet. My history with a cappella is very limited, but this just blows away that history and any previous experiences. Voices become the orchestra. Together, they produce a sound that not only blends through harmonies, but that can sustain the individual grit too, whilst exhibiting personal talent in a perfect group, from the base to the top notes. And then, there are ‘noises’ that compliment the singing voices, which along with the background, costumes and make up are defined and melded in post production to produce nothing short of a masterful epic, that is a masterpiece.

The sheer joy on your face when you listen to music…and your laughs. Are why I stay subscribed to you out of all the voice teacher channels out there. Plus you feel about music how I feel about visual arts lol.

I love how giddy you get, it makes me giddy too. I love hiw you notice the subtle things that most people blow right over, like the door creaking and the super high note at the end. I love your vids! Thank you so much for your insight.😊

Another vocal coach I enjoy, The Fairy Voice Mother, compared Eli’s high wail to several well-known female wailers (such as Whitney Houston). He pretty much hits the same notes.

These gentleman always surprise me, just like you said Elizabeth ... I should be prepared by now but every time there's something new or a new way of expressing the music that just blows my mind. I don't know how they keep growing but they just keep getting stronger. As always thank you for the technical insight that you bring to all of your videos :)

J was chopping along between double and triple time. Chopping is a midwest style of rap that emphasizes speed and clarity of pronunciation. As a Kansas boy I have a preference for the style. I grew up listening to Tech N9ne and his associates, they are the gold standard for choppers. And J is damn good.

So glad to see you getting to this one Elizabeth, it was a genuine joy to watch your reaction! I agree that Voiceplay should do more Viking music: I for one would love to see them spin off of something crazy like an Amon Amarth song. Don't know if that's technically possible, but if anyone can pull it off it's these guys!

It's an awesome song and arrangement, but did you catch the visual story they told in that video? The main VP members start out in Valhalla with Jay in Midguard. He is shown facing an advancing enemy hoard. Then he joins the rest in Valhalla, and then they all go back to fight the enemy. I think that story is at least as entertaining as the sound and main song.
