Every time I hear this I am reminded of professor Tolkien's experiences in WWI. The line " I hope that you remember me ", to me, says ' I hope you remember the boy I was when I left here because the man who came back is a different entity entirely. ' I would imagine that the boy who left England died to fire on the mountain, to fire that hollowed souls, that there was blood in the trees, a hope of being remembered, and constant blood on the breeze in the form of artillery or gas of various forms. I hear that in THIS version. That is the longing ache I get from Geoff's version of the song.

War tends to do that, I myself had just graduated high school at 17 and months later was sent to fight in the Desert Storm (Gulf War). We leave as children and even if we aren’t gone for long, we return men who have aged many years.

That's a really great way to put it. War is terrible, all it does is TAKE and it never adds up to anything good. Alongside being basically Mass Murder, it's a form of revenge on a GIANT scale that entire nations take on other nations. What an absolute waste of lives and resources.

If someone would've told me it was the same person vocalizing all these parts without knowing who it was, I would have called B.S. and stayed ignorant n oblivious. The lows that he hits are just mind bending but toss in the cut and clarity of his higher register..........it's just.......just....well, just insane!! Awesome reaction and analysis 👏

@HunterTheFerocious Let me correct you here: Geoff was TRAINED by The Dragon. And I mean that in the literal sense. Tim Foust, The Dragon's Breath himself, taught Geoff his "Dragon's Breath" Sub-Harmonic Technique many years ago. And you can see how proficient Geoff has gotten with it over the years if you compare this song, "I See Fire," with his cover of "Misty Mountains." He recorded "Misty Mountains," I believe, the same year he was taught the technique. His Subs are kinda rough in that song. But in this song, "I See Fire," his Subs are SMOOOOOOOTH.

One thing worth knowing is that the inner ear doesn't hear very low notes as clearly as mid-range and higher ones, and that means that less-than-pure ones, especially, can be vague to the brain. If you're a low bass singer, even with a lot of experience and a good natural ear it can be BRUTAL to stay on pitch and on key, because you literally cannot hear the notes you're singing as clearly as a baritone or tenor can. Monitors, so you're hearing yourself more through your entire ears and not so much from the inside out, can help, but mostly it takes practice and feedback, and, often, listening to playback right after you sing. Geoff's ability to string together complicated melodies of super-low notes is PHENOMENALLY more impressive than it might even seem. There are a bunch of really low-reaching basses hitting it out of the park on KZbin these days, but Geoff's mobility and accuracy, and the smoothness of it, is unbelievable. Even if you can sing every note he hits, being able to string those low passes together properly -- never mind making it sound natural -- is excruciatingly difficult. And a playback may disappoint you even if you thought you got it clean.

I see some that seem to just be trying to get as low as possible, and some do in fact go lower than he does - but I've yet to find any that can match how CLEAN he is at those tones. I'm sure his actual range is even lower than he does in songs, but he won't do them unless he can keep it pure.

We are so fortunate to be able to listen to a talent like Geoff. His arrangements truly are works of genius and as you noted, are only getting better. His most recent release, a cover of Chris Isaak's Wicked Game is a good example. There's so much space in it, yet the soundscaping will remind you a bit of what he did in The Sound of Silence. It's a remarkable piece, fraught with emotional impact, and Geoff's vocals are absolutely haunting. He always makes me hear a song differently, and this was no exception. Simply amazing.

Yes!! Great reaction, Elizabeth! So glad you finally got to this one, knew you would love it! Filmed at Pattycake Productions, it was just Geoff, Kathy and Rick Underwood (makeup wizard and beard wrangler extraordinaire) on the day, Eli programmed the lighting the day before as he couldn't be there for the shoot, Layne and Tony helped with the set. Good job that Rick kept all the beards and hairpieces, etc. from 'Misty Mountains Cold', we are all hoping the 'dwarves' return for a song from the third movie in the trilogy! Every time I hear this it moves me!

So glad you were able to give us your take on Geoff's video - I've been hoping you would do this for a while now! From the moment I first heard it, this became, and continues to be, my favorite of Geoff's solo videos. From the arrangement, to splitting the dwarves out into separate, distinct voices, to the simple but effective lighting of the set (thank you, Eli!), to the costumes and makeup, to the emotional performance, this just has everything I could want. The slow growth in complexity and volume, from a single solo singer to the climax of everyone singing together with the instrumental backing, the song takes us on a journey - not a happy journey, but an emotional one nonetheless. The light at the end of the tunnel isn't the tunnel opening back up, but the light from a dragon's fire that may burn us all. "Somber" is an apt word for this performance - and what a performance it is!

May I humbly suggest you react to Bobby McFerrin? You will find none better at a Capella. The best example of his vocal ability is entitled 'Drive'. This is a man who can sing two separate notes simultaneously (one in his vocal chords and one with his lips} while using his body as percussion. If that doesn't spark your interest, I don't know what will. For the best example of his performance style, try 'LIVE Improvisation at The Kennedy Center'. He plays the audience and choir as instruments. Wonderful man who MUST be seen in concert once in one's lifetime.

So happy to see you doing Geoff again, and I hope you get to Voiceplay's cosmic new one! Or their "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," which is so much fun! Also Geoff's latest, "Wicked Game!" Definitely one of his best, like this one. What I really love in this one is how he pronounces "Fire." It's almost an "ahh" sound, it's airier, softer, less sharp than the way it's typically said, with an "eye" sound. By the way, your nails look fabulous! And your hair totally matches Geoff's video! 😉

Geoff is a dragon slayer with the voice of a dragon for sure with that voice. I love his arrangements so much and his layering is spot on! I would suggest you check out Peter Hollens version of this song. Different but on of his best

16:17 brush snare . Beautiful example on the acoustic version of dishealla’s. “Until I wake up”. They nearly mimics the dustiness of vinyl with a brush on snare!

So happy to see you come back to Geoff! I always was a little surprised by how popular his Misty Mountains cover was, for myself I thought he sang it beautifully and it was a very good arrangement, but the song itself did absolutely nothing for me. So, as one of his patrons, when he first released some preview photos of this, and with my not being familiar with the song, I was really not excited at all. But it is one of my very favorite of all of his arrangements, right up there with Shenandoah for it being one that always grabs me because of the emotion and beauty of the song. And after he admitted himself, that he found this song to be a lot more interesting and emotional than Misty Mountains, I didn't feel quite so guilty about not liking that first dwarf song as well, LOL.

What I love about this cover of I See Fire is that... like you point out, this is the cover of it where the adventuring party has just defeated one powerful boss and has another one knocking on their door. This cover has SO much "eye of the storm" energy, where they've passed through the wind wall on one side and having that moment to breathe before the other wall slams into them. This song is meant to be one of dread, because that is where it sits in the story. In the last few years, I've come to feel... actually kind of bad for the music from movies that I didn't care for. I See Fire, The Last Goodbye, even Yellow Flicker Beat. All songs that are just... amazing songs in their own right, but that I... kind of blew past because of my feelings for the movies they were attached to. At least now I'm able to appreciate them, having heard some amazing covers.

It copies the youtube settings from the tab you opened. Hence if you have subtitles open on the tab and open a new youtube video from there it keeps the subtitle settings. If you open a new youtube video from a video you turned off the subtitle settings they will not show up. Same applies to volume, resolution etc.
