In this video I make a simple belt buckle for my viking belt from a piece of antler based on several finds of antler belt buckles from the viking age. I craft it on the go and with the use of very simple tools - and the result is more inspired by the original than a reproduction.
The video is recorded in Asturias - a mountain region on the north coast of Spain. I am doing Viking Hikes and Crafts here several times a year and Im building a kit as I go and in the order I need things. See the full playlist here:

Brilliant as always my friend! I just can't get enough of your crafting videos! The idea of using antler or bone instead of metal makes a lot of sense when you consider how much more readily available it would have been. Not to mention easier to work, with less specialised tool and equipment. I think you've inspired me to try making my own buckle like this! 😄

Hey, thanks for including the sources in the description. I had no idea belt hardware from bone, antler, walrus, or ivory was even possible before this, let alone as well-attested as it seems to have been based on those finds; that's super interesting!

Hello Kyle. Im very happy that you found it use full. Even though i have studied the viking a lot i keep being taken off guard about All the knowledge, documentation and artefacts there is.

watching you make the square hole makes me wonder whether they may have used a type of parser drill (aka passer drill).
@RAMUNI-Viking

I havent thought of that. But I know of No finds from the Viking age of this type of Drill. But it is interesting. Thanks for watching and taking the time to write

@@RAMUNI-Viking it’s an interesting thought because those drills were in use in England around that time, so I thought they may have been taken home. btw, I am going to try making one of these belts using a piece of bone, to see how it goes. thanks for the interesting channel. cheers from Australia

Awesome video like always! I will definitely try to make the same type of belt for myself. Hope bone will work in the place of antler... Your videos got me into wood carving and i even started basic blacksmithing and everything i make must resemble or be authentic viking. Keep doing your awesome work your an inspiration to others!

Oh, doesn't that antler smell when you file on it!!! Carving antlers is fun but tougher than you expect. Are yours Stag or Elk? We have harvested many elk over the years and have made some home lighting fixtures with their antlers. I enjoyed your buckle making very much and know the hard work that would go into such a hand made treasure. Thank you for including the stunningly beautiful scenes from you area. Thank you, RAMUNI. I noticed that this type of belt could have doubled as a cinch to help in carrying different items in a pinch or to lash and item to a pack. A very versatile belt indeeed

Thank you for your comment and thoughts Wyo. Indeed it could serve many functions. Good observation. I didnt think about that my self. This is red deer stag antler. Good to hear you do some antler work as well:) the place is Asturias in the north of Spain. My wife is from here so we go a couple of times every year. Its a Lovely place. I miss the Mountains here in Denmark. Be safe my friend

Oh and yes it does smell. But with hand tools and being outside its ok and I guess one accept it for the final result. But I just made some more in my modern workshop with power tools and then it gets warm too. And thats a nasty smell

the tool I simply just refer to as a ring and dot tool. I dont know other name for it. The pants are a simple version of the Thorsberg Trousers made from linen.

@@RAMUNI-Viking thanks for the answers! Trousers look very nice. I especially like how they bunch up over the leg wraps. Makes them look a bit like those famous baggy pants, but not too much. Il think Ill use the same for my impression 😆
