Viking Reenactor Reviews VALHEIM Historical Accuracy

Күн бұрын

Valheim is a smash hit Viking survival game filled with trolls, greydwarfs, skeletons, monsters, and adventure!
But how historically accurate is it? Are there pieces of Viking archaeology and history that we can find even in a fantasy game? Join me as I look at what the real Vikings looked like compared to Valheim. You might eve learn a word or two of Welsh along the way ;)
Also you get to hear my terrible Jacksepticeye impression. I'm not sorry.

One of the small things I like is the Flint in Valheim. It's not gathered by mining it, but gathering it from the shore. Reflects on the fact that there is very little flint in Norway, so during the stone age the flint they had was either brought from elsewhere or... gathered from the shore, where flint stones were deposited by the ice! Pretty neat detail.
@MartinTraXAA

Oh, and the stone circles that form the keel of a ()-shaped ship are actually graves in the game. Similar to stone structures that can be found especially in Sweden. In the game you can excavate them with a pickaxe and find buried skeletons and treasure!

Yes, you can get linen through the game, but it is very far from the very first location and first boss. In fact, even if you are lucky enough to get some linen, the game will not allow you to craft something - your progress should be bigger.

I actually love this sort of approach more for a Viking inspired setting. It's more original and you can see they've taken inspiration from history and mythology rather than something like AC Valhalla where it feel like they've twisted things up while claiming it's historical.

one thing I thought was a really nice touch in this game is that the first enemies you fight aren't some generic fantasy monster, but living trees. Killing Greydwarfs and using their wood to make a house is wary similar to Odin killing Ymir and using his body to crate Midgard, our home world.

I love how building stuff in the game requires tons of materials, and then suddenly you've used up all the natural resources in the vicinity. This has unfortunately historically happened in many parts of the real world. Also, I'm convinced that the trolls and other creatures are just trying to protect their home environment from the invading players. They always seem to appear when you're cutting down trees and mining minerals... ^^;;

Love that you did this video. This is a wonderful game. I'd like to point out some things you may have missed. First the bargeboards. You actually CAN cross them the way they were done just by using the individual wood beams. It would be kind of hard to describe here but you use the snap points. The X shaped beam is just an easy way. Tapestries. One of the updates coming is called "Home and Hearth". There are hints that tapestries are coming. The bed. (SPOILER:) You can make a better bed later that is quite accurate to some examples we've seen. Runestones have red paint as we know they did in period. Sure, they glow but...it's fantasy. The sword you can make with bronze looks like examples of swords from the Nordic Bronze Age. The sword you can make of iron looks like a typical lobed pommel Viking Age sword, and the sword you can make with silver (It comes after iron and ignore that it's made of a weak metal) looks like a late Viking Age early normal style sword with a brazil-nut pommel. That attention to progression is great. One of the polearms you can make is an atgeir which is a weapon that never gets enough love or recognition. The armour is pretty crap but eh. While it is crap, I'd like to draw attention to the helmets which look pretty good on the iron. The (SPOILER) padded armour, later on, is gambeson, which isn't Viking Age but it's still nice to see gambeson. The helm looks like a spectacle helm with an aventail. The ship burials that you can find around the meadows are a nice touch. Weaving and sails. One of the updates coming is called "Ships and Sea". And customisation of your ship, sails included, is heavily hinted at. Also we already (SPOILER) have a spinning wheel in-game. I think we need a loom, though.

Shut your gate! There's a lot to love in this game. I love that iron comes from bogs (well, from mud in swamp dungeons, but still), tin comes from rocks on the sea shore, nails for the beautiful boats, etc etc. But I was really disappointed with them putting a spinning wheel in. Those amazing sails were spindle spun and there should have been acknowledgement of that - a spindle and distaff in a basket of fleece would have been cool. I think the architectural influence on the game from the stave church at Borgund is evident. Including the carved dragon heads. Whatever you're doing for your audience (multiplayer valheim server?) - don't underestimate the power of blocking in Valheim combat. Not only will it reduce the amount of damage, but a perfect block (timing) stuns and staggers melee AND ranged enemies - allowing you to dish out critical damage to them.

It is a bit more to the story of the game, The 10th realm is a prison where Odin have locked away some powerful monsters and they are staring to break free. You newly dead and handpicked to go there and defeat the monsters.

Hey, I know you cover alot of anglo, norse, icelandic, welsh history, especially obviously with vikings. I was wondering if you were interested in the Varangian Guard, or the Kievan Rus. They're both favorite topics of mine, especially as a fan of late roman/byzantine history.

I plan to do some Byzantine stuff yes absolutely, I adore it and Roman. As for the Kievans, it's not a favourite subject of mine, but I think I have a couple of videos on them in the pipeline as well.

It really feels like a love letter to the Viking age. Not 100% accurate, but it includes the small things. Many of your complaints are added in later "tech tiers," especially now that they have added a few more biomes.

I actually think that the smelter is an OKEY and acceptable (not accurate, but moderately inspired) representation of an iron age blast furnace, even though they were a lot smaller and made of clay I believe. I'll link a picture of a "reconstructed" blast furnace. sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bl%C3%A4sterugn#/media/Fil:Hobro__-Fyrkat-__Vikingecenter_12_ies.jpg I also believe that the "birdhuman" that brings you to Valheim is a Vildvittra, or harpy as I think they are called in the english version of Ronja, the robbers daughter. The greydwarfs also seem to be inspired from Ronja, the robbers daughter. :)

I adore this game. I never got into Minecraft, I got angry that I kept accidentally destroying things when trying to use them. But this game is lovely. My one beef with it though is with crafting items and placing items. I wish that once placed, you could move an item if it's not exactly how you want it, rather than destroying it and trying again. I'm a tad OCD over placing things JUST RIGHT, that it can be frustrating if I just need to push something a little bit. That said, while exploring around, I found this adorable, quaint little abandoned farm/village along the coast, and I decided to make that my new home base. Of course, my first one was across the island, thank goodness for carts to haul my stuff to the new locale. I've restored the 5 houses there, repaired fences around the raspberry bushes that were there. I've started building up stone walls and a moat to create a probably not accurate "keep" around my little village.

I love your videos! I've also been having a blast with this game, and my earliest critique was also how much leather is used and how late fabric comes into play, where really it should be the other way around. One tiny petpeeve I have though, and something I know most non-native Scandinavians would have no way of knowing, is that the vowel "heim" is pronouncend like "day", not like in "high". That pronounciation is decidedly German, and English speakers just assume its the same because of the spelling.

The boats look great, but the rigging isn't quite right. First the mast doesn't have shrouds, so it'd topple over the side as soon as you look at it. Boats of that size generally don't have backstays, mostly because it gets in the way. The braces (the lines coming from each end of the yard), there should only be one on each side, the windward/luff brace would be tied to the top strake forward, and the leeward/leech brace would be fed through a cleat and be held (or tied) by the steersman. There's also no halyard here, but I'll forgive them that as the yard is fixed in place :) That said, I am really impressed - the scale looks right, the sail shape looks good, and on the compass they have the deadzone where it's impossible to sail (although I would put it a bit wider for realism's sake, but totally understand that it's a gameplay thing - Real Tacking Simulator would be an exercise in frustration!). I've not played it, but defo want to after seeing this, thanks Jimmy!

I’m guessing the construction of the crossbeams is a consequence of how things are constructed in the game rather than them suggesting that’s how they really would be constructed, so I think they can be let off that one. Twitch gaming sounds like a nice idea; would you just play this game or do others? 🙂 Hmm, wonder how many non-Brits watching haven’t got a clue what you mean by Camp coffee? Would be interesting to see what they come up with. 🤣

Those "stargazing" camp chairs, I was told in my local SCA group that the design is actually a US colonial one. I haven't seen much evidence for that, but with all the wood available in 17th and 18th century US, it would be a design that might suggest its self in a land where trees were a major obstacle to farming. I would guess it's a design that independently sprung up in several different places over time, but not in Norse medieval culture.
