Rollo (Clive Standen) is 6'2''. Irl he was also particularly tall and he was known as Rollo "The Walker" because he was so big that he couldn't be carried by horses.

Yeah, Eric's right. It's an easy haul. The little monasteries and churches had all these riches, but nobody of consequence guarding them, unlike something like say a castle, which would have hundreds of armed men defending them. So, yeah, easy pickings. Gold, silver, gems, fine art...and only priests standing in your way? Perfect.
@KolyoSofiata7 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is an easy haul. But on the thing about castles. Castles didn't have hundreds of men defending them back then, almost always there were less than a hundred. Because you don't need a lot of people to defend it effectively and you have limited resources inside so the fewer the better. Also unless there is a war there aren't that many soldiers around. No one needs a large army just standing about doing nothing and eating your food supplies. That's why these early raids were so easy. When the kindom is at war they muster troops. Basically taking evey healthy man and training them how to fight at least decently. Then when the war is over the army doesn't stay together they go back to farming (or whatever they were doing before).
@kakhagvelesiani38777 жыл бұрын
+MrChickenmaster Well not actually when war was over. Usually they were fighting for 40 days , than returned to their lands. Also you make assembling troops wasn't like that. States will be able to take every healthy man from all population only after reforms that will happen in French army after Great Revolution , when their size became close to the million. Sizes of armies weren't big and usually small . Equipment was a difficult question and many of lower class guys had shitty equipment and the one that they were able to acquire or pay for , while higher ups had far better. At Battle of Agincourt while part of cavalry for example , had all the equipment and armor, even on horses , the other part had shitty ones and some were almost ,, naked '' as you would say. Training of troops was also kinda like that. Usually people from specific classes like knights were the ones that you could count on knowing how to fight , since this was all they could do , as well as mercenaries. Also remember that it was loose feudal society still and king needed support of troops from his lords , barons. Those lords assembled what they could get , pay and etc. it was from absolute monarchy that later will be established. You look on all that affair through glasses of present and how you see war preparation and effort today or 1-2 centuries ago , also influence of Holywood movies , while reality was different from that.

The viking that Rollo is based on was called Walking Rolf, he was named that beacuse he was so big that he couldn`t ride a horse. According to archaeologist the average height for males in Norway during the viking age were 170 CM compared to 181 CM in Norway today. So someone that was wery tall for that age could have been 188(Clive Standen`s height)

@TimpanistMoth_AyKayEll5 жыл бұрын
@Kurt Rustle Viking horses WERE probably pretty small. Icelandic horses are descended from the Viking settlers' stock and are technically "pony" sized (though sturdy enough to carry tall men, given the right conditioning). Modern Norwegian horse breeds (Fjording, Nordlandshest etc) are also on the smaller side. AFAIK, most pre-"knights in full armor"-era horses tended to be smaller (and probably more compact) than typical "pretty Hollywood horses". Most horses were plow/draft animals, some used for (relatively) slow travel, horseback combat was rare, and it's wasteful to feed a bigger animal than you actually need. In any case, given how little is known for sure about the historical Rollo (if there was one), I would assume any bynames were chosen for epic badassity more than realism. ;-)

I also started to fall in love with her in this episode and the show. Just her saving the woman from being raped told me there is more to her character. I loved her acting in that scene. This is the episode where I got hooked. I just love the music when there attacking the church. It's powerful.

Scarlett Johansson looks like a typical blond girl next door, has the most basic (I'd say very simple) facial features and there's no fire in her glance, as if she's made of plastic with no charisma. Almost all groups in Europe at the time did some horrific shit but i guess the Vikings weren't hiding it as much as others. The amount of people the Vikings killed is probably just a drop in the Ocean compared to the Church in Europe. But yeah main reason i love the show is both im Icelandic and the fact that i hate hero movies/ tv shows where everyone is extremely nice and fake , that's not how the world works.
@mern4616 жыл бұрын
Well...i liked Rollo eventually ... but he is not a good man..he has many flaws..since raping is acceptable in their culture to servants,slaves,or raided towns he indulged it without remorse.Telling me he really didn't like girls at all. But Ragnar never raped nor his first son. He preferred women that desired him.

do not forget that most European armies at the time did the same thing, the special thing about the vikings were that they killed the clergy men but most armies killed civilians and unarmed soldiers. A popular tactic at the time was to just burn all the surrounding land's of a city or a castle to the ground thereby starving the defender's and then start to blockade the defender's inside. but most people at the time were unable to read and write, but the clergy were well educated so we really only hear there side of the story. hopefully I were of service and I like people who can have a civil argument, please

If you go into old cities in Europe the doors are very short. I am 5'10 and had to duck into the doors. It made sense since the smaller the opening, the less heat escaped in the winter. The ceiling in most places I say was no more than 7'. That of course was not the case in larger castles and keeps, but I'm talking about the standard buildings still standing in use.

well, you can simply guess that it's after the Roman Empire, because there are Saxons in Britannia, who in their turn when they first came to the Island they ended the ruling of the empire and back then, the Saxons still believed in their own gods. Later on, Rome sent religious emissaries to the kingdoms of Britannia and Christianized them. The age of the Vikings came later on, when those Kingdoms where already Christians.

Most of the History channel shows about Vikings are very shady on facts including the show Vikings but they seem to get the big things right but some details not so much , its not their fault on this topic , the English wrote most about it at the time and the Vikings didn't really record any of it until they landed in Iceland and started writing the Icelandic Sagas and those have some Mighty fiction in between. but even today for example in my country Iceland you can both find small people and giants so we are probably both right if you think about it like that The larger ones probably more likely to go viking. anyway love the reaction and hope you guys continue with the show.

@Kaleb Mccarley Russians wouldn't learn all about American history because they aren't descended from Americans and their biggest interactions were relatively recent, theyd look at the cold war and the space race but no too much beyond that until they are in higher/further education. My point was America is such a young country you don't get a good view of ancient history looking at a 300 year old country. In the UK we learn about this shit because we were at war with cultures like the Romans and vikings thousands of years ago and our societies integrated in one way or another. Like if your last name ends in son there's a good chance your ancestors were at least influenced by Viking culture since that trend originated in Scandinavia.

Damn man I knew you guys in the US lack knowledge especially in Geography and History, but holy cow most 10 year olds in Europe know this and get taught about this at school. 1)As many have pointed out already this show plays during the early Middle Ages (5th-15th century) so the Imperium Romanum as a whole is gone. The only thing that is left is the Byzantine Empire or Eastern Roman Empire. 2)The so called English Longbow wasn't even a thing until the 12th century. Longbows did exist but not the specific English Longbow. 3)And this one pisses me off the most, there are NO fucking Vikings. Vikings aren't a culture it is simply a term, so those Scandinavians would go on a so called Viking, which can be translated to going on a purge or raid.
@mediam39577 жыл бұрын
Peter Andersen Speaking as a US citizen, we are taught mainly the history and geography of OUR country. What we learn in terms of European history takes place from the Renaissance and forward. Middle Aged may be touched on. Aside from that, it's classic Greco-Roman culture and key figures. I don't know the education system and standards over in Europe, but I don't think you guys take an extensive look into our history, due to the fact that it's not YOUR history.
@allbies7 жыл бұрын
I know what you're saying, and not everything can be taught in mandatory education, however the US is of primarily European descent and wasn't founded until the 18th century so I'd say European history and the history of the world before these times should be very important for USA education system
