Shane is right about the belief in other gods. Many Christians at this time were still heavily influenced by their pagan past, and generally still believed in plenty of pagan gods. It's why they came up with the distinction between religion and superstition, so that instead of having to completely stop believing in pagan gods, they could keep believing in them, while pretending like they weren't breaking the first commandment. Superstitions became less accepted over time, but it took a LONG time for them to go away. (In fact, they still haven't completely disappeared in our time.) Christianity never would've been able to spread all across Europe without making these kinds of compromises with the pagan populace. You can't take away someone's entire culture in one step, that never works. A similar compromise was Easter, today everyone knows it as a Christian holiday, but the name and date actually come from a pagan ritual, the Christians simply co-opted an existing holiday to make the transition a bit smoother.
@fheedpexx9267
@fheedpexx9267 7 жыл бұрын
Most important of those compromises (I tend to think of it more like kidnapping) is Christmas. Jesus wasn't even born that time of the year. Scandinavia still doesn't call what they celebrate "Christmas", it's jul/yule at the winter solstice they're really celebrating. Like they have done since long before anyone had heard about Jesus.

DUCK SAUCE Spoliers Possibly but I don't care weather Ragnar approves or not,Ivar is justify in wanting to kill Lagertha she murderd his mom for literally no reason. She didnt have to kill Aslaug becuse Aslaug was already leaving,Hirst even said in a interview that Ivar never would have stared the war if Lagertha did not kill Aslaug so even the creator of the show says she brought this on herself and Ivar at first wanted to settle things the honorable way with single combat but Lag denied him. I an't the huges fan of Aslaug but Ivar would be dead if it wasn't her she took care of him when everyone else even Ragnar ignored him. The idea that Ivar should shrug of the murder of the only person that was there for him his whole life is honestly crazy to me. Also Ragnar told Ivar to ruthlessness and to get back at everybody who wrongs him I doubt a cvil war was what he wanted but he did encourage Ivar's violent nature.

Bjorn would have been Bjorn Ragnarsson before Ragnar gave him his new name. Ragnar's 'surname' Lothbrok is also a nickname - Shaggy Britches. If traditional sources are to be believed, he is son of a Swedish king Sigurd Hring, so he would have been Ragnar Sigurdsson. (edited for spelling)

Just wanted to say while it vikings generally used the patronymic (son/daughter of ), there were rare instances of using matronymic (son/daughter of ). This tradition is visible in historic records of vikings who settled in N & W Iceland. Not Ragnar's case but it would be possible.

Haavik26 That's subjective I like Ubbe and Ivar more then him. spoilers Ubbe is just so compassionate,wise for his age and likeable that I just can't help but love him even if Hirst didn't given that much focus in 4B. Ubbe is suppose to be getting a lot more foucus in s5 thought acroding to interviews. As for Ivar the actor is just so good ,the best out of all the actors playing the Ragnarssons imo as for the charater itself well the charater is just very complex able to go from being creepy to vulnerable, childish to funny and a much others moods at the drop of the hat. Also as a person with a disabliity I also admire his determination to not let his disability get in his way. Unpopular opinion but to me Bjorn was at his best in seasons 2-3 after that Hirst turned him into a soulless Ragnar clone with nearly no sigins of humanity, that's just my opinion though.

Lawren Stewart I agree! But, *SPOILERS* / \/ / /\ I always saw that Bjorn was very different from Ragnar... When he was young, he always wanted to attack attack, attack, Ragnar always thought on thing differently. Then, he he grew older (Season 3, 4), he showed that unlike Ragnar, his own children were not the most precious thing to him. Ragnar would never neglect his daughter like Bjorn, who just gave her to Aslaug and couldn't care less about her, just because her mother left. And as we've seen in 4b, he grew wiser than before, but also he develop his very own personality: He will do whatever he feels like, even if it come to taking his mom's gf. And I agree in Ubbe, he just amazing. He is a family man, like Ragnar. He fights like Ragnar. And he always looking for ways to do good for the life of his people (And he was a great military as well leader historically). I can't decide who is my favorite, him or Ivar, but I'll have to go with Ivar due to his historical importance. I mean, if they choose to make him who he was historically, then we'll never see a Viking greater of as influencing than him.
@lawrens8648

squashedeyeball If I was rank the sons from favorite to least favorite it would be Ivar,Ubbe,Bjorn,Hvitserk and then Sigurd. spoilers Neither Hvitserk or Sigurd stood out that much to be me in 4B but unlike Sigurd Hvitserk still has a chance to devlope so I'll rank him higher. As for Bjorn in the early seasons he always remind me more of Rollo than Ragnar which was fine but now it feels like Bjorn is trying to be more like Ragnar copying his voice, speeches and body mannirsm. It shouln't be a problem since he was the son that spent the most time with him but it comes off as so forced and fake on screen imo. Even during he's raid in Spain it didnt feel like Bjorn wanted to be there becuse he was curious just that he wanted to explore something because Ragnar did and he wanted to show people that's he's just like him. As for Ivar's future thanks to reddit posting leak scripts I know a lot more than I should about. I'll just say there are really great things in store for Ivar in S5 and Ubbe will do something really amazing in 5B.I will reval that Ivar will fall in love with someone in S5 since Alex already revealed that in a interview.

Shane was actually quite right about the “belief in other gods” thing. I’m not sure if at this point the norse gods were considered, by the christians, as “gods” or just forces from folklore, but we know the hebrews used to believe in many gods but give worship to only one with time. Interesting, so I don’t even think Althestan was suuuuper modern, you have to remember how religion was strongly attached to a culture and identity so that was serious for him; but the part of “there.. might be other spirits/forces out there” was still present in some way.

I commented this on the Patreon but I forgot to renew so ill summarize. This is not correct for this period. By the time it starts, the Nicean council happened 400 years ago and Charlemagne has started the age of solidified Christian belief when he beat the Muslim invaders at Tours. 'Pagan' actively means 'believer in false God's' or 'He who denies the real God' both clearly state that the Christian God is the only real one. In fact, sources from the time state that Christians were so opposed to any kind of Viking belief that they were convinced it was all demon worship. Some even go as far as to say that they should all die because they deny God. This was also the period in which the 'Warrior Priest's' were born and their only goal was to 'Slay the Godless Heathen Pagans and protect the people of the one true God'. So NO Shane is VERY, VERY WRONG here and the fact that Athelstan, who was born in the immediate post-Charlemagne era, even considered the belief in different God's is pretty amazing. This kind mix of belief wouldn't start for 2 centuries and it would be the Vikings who start it in order to accept Christianity.

+Paul Anthony Uh.....this is awkward. What I'm saying is that it WAS accurate and Shane was wrong to say it wasn't. So I'm saying that the show is accurate in depicting the Historical religious mindset well and that Shane and the rest of the guys are confusing it with other earlier periods. Vikings is not fully accurate and changes things from History intentionally for its story, but here they were 100% right.
@vividly94
@vividly94 7 жыл бұрын
You do realize a lot of the post-Charlemagne era, the people were mostly Pagans, right? When the vikings were introduced, in order to appease them and make the most peace, they often scurried pagan lessons into their Catholic teachings just so they can make better peace and offer a mid-point in both of their religions. I could write an entire paragraph on this, but like... what you're stating is shit you only see in movies like Orlando Bloom's Kingdom movie. lol You should really learn a lot about their cultural theology back then. It'll brain fuck you. It's also known that we blended in practices in both religions into one.
@lordeaa4603
@lordeaa4603 7 жыл бұрын
+Vividly You do realize I never disputed that fact, right? You're talking about the Viking conversion, which started a couple of centuries after this at the early 1000's. This series is depicting the first interactions between Vikings and Christain's post Lindisfarne at around late 700's. Kingdom of Heaven, the horribly inaccurate movie about the Crusades. Want to hear something hilariously ironic? It argued something similar to what you are saying.............Several centuries later when it made a little more sense. I did......that's why I'm saying all this. The blend happened decades after this. Back in this period, preaching Christianity in Scandinavia got you executed.

Nope, this is like 200-300 years before that naming tradition started. The concept of surnames had not reached Scandinavia at this point. At the end of the viking age his name would have been that, but this is in the beginning.
@fheedpexx9267
@fheedpexx9267 7 жыл бұрын
To clarify, what they had was more like descriptions than names. Like how Björn's first name comes from his interaction with a "Björn" (google it), Whiteserk, Snake-in-the-eye etc. So if they had two dudes named Leif and there really wasn't anything special about them, then yeah - one of them might have been called Leif Eriksson, to differentiate between them. Because that's what he would have been - Leif, Erik's son. If that person got like a scar that was really prominent, people would likely have started to call him something like "Leif Scar-in-the-face". You couldn't really call it a name, it wasn't systematic until way later.

as far as the surname thing goes - i think - the norse people did not have actual last names. they had their first names and then if they earn a nickname or something then that goes along with their name, sort of like a last name, but not exactly because it does not represent a family - just one particular person. it is just another way of identifying the person. lothbrok is actually translated to hairy breeches because ragnar used to wear fur pants all the time, i believe. bjorn gets known as ironside as you saw. the show confuses it all because it treats lothbrok as a last name, even though it is not.

Hey mate, great seeing you here :) I don't think there should be any doubts about watching it. For me it's the greatest show of all time. Vikings Rome (All the others). Don't expect too see game of thrones 2, because Vikings has an entire different agenda. They invest far more in emotion and the portrayal of ordinary lives in historical context. It's not 100% historically accurate of course, far from it. But that is because not much is known on early Viking period and most of it is based on the Ragnar saga. But that means that Michael Hirst (The creator and only writer), had to pretty much come up with everything, from characters to plot, by himself. Although Travis Fimmel who plays Ragnar, helped him a lot and together they discussed every episode. Many of the things you'll see are Travis's ideas. Not only he is one of the greatest actors ever lived, he also gave far more than just acting to this show. Season 1 might seem different, due to tiny budget and uncertain future. But season 2 is a complete masterpiece, each season is getting more epic and it seems that season 5 is about to take the show to a new height. I don't think Jody would like it that much though, since Vikings has very little "shinny CGI and special effects moments". I mean, the cinematography in Vikings is amazing, especially after season 1, but they almost never use green screen and the cgi is very little as well. Also, in Vikings not everything is explain to you, it leaves some things for you to understand by your own. But when it comes to human character which you can see yourself as and to fights and too epic sense of progress and to acting and to the showing of the human mind and emotion, I think that Vikings managed to do something really special, more than GoT.

squashedeyeball hey Man great seeing you here. Every time I hear about this show people always say it's like a mini GOT, like this is great but GOT is just greater, Iike someone once gave me this example he said Vikings is like Terminator 1 which is freaking EPIC and GOT is like Terminator 2. They are both epic but one just beats the other, in this case GOT bests Vikings. But regardless even if it's almost as good as GOT then that's a top tier epic show in its own right, I'll definitely check it out
@squashedeyeball
@squashedeyeball 7 жыл бұрын
Omar Barakat Well, if you compare success, then GoT is based on a huge and well written fantasy saga AND has a huge budget on a huge channel. So obviously, is has much more exposure, resources and it also has everything set to them by Martin's writing. Vikings had none of these and they only have Hirst, the creator and only writer. But with the nothing the show had, it managed to become huge, even in the tiny history channel. It's the fans only who carries the show and it grew insanely big after season 1. If you're referring to quality, then the shows are nothing alike since Vikings is not about lots of separated, insanely special stories. It's about the human race as a whole, in historical context. So while Bran is special, you can't be Bran. You can, however, be Ragnar, because he has the same dreams as we have in our times. Plus, when is comes to atmosphere and surreal thing, Vikings invest a lot... Wardruna's music fits the show amazingly and it only adds to it. I would say that Vikings does some thing much better than GoT, because GoT doesn't even try doing them. Also, Vikings it based on history, not fantasy, which by itself makes them very different in context... It has some scene which cross the border to fantasy, but it's mainly visions and portrayal of emotions and self conflict, not actual things that happens in reality. So I would say, watch Vikings as an entirely different show than GoT :) SithFurion is the first Vikings reactor on youtube, I believe that many of the recent Vikings reaction come thanks to him and all the effort he put into this show's reactions...

Great seeing you again :) Everyone: "skål!" King Horik: "Cheers!" The voice of reason: "Kill this man!" Well, Horik is an idiot, BUT, he didn't come total empty ended: He fear Ragnar's ever growing influence. The fact that he reunites with his ex who is now an earl too, is very alarming to Horik. So they both lost a lot of men during the battle. If they are weakened, Horik is safer. 3:19 That's why a man on horse back will always be at a disadvantage when he faces a man on foot. If it's one on one, the foot guy can easily move aside and strike him. But it seems that the horse only ran over Rollo's legs. So while fucked up for a long time, it wasn't something too severe. I just love how our young son Bjorn looks at our father when he's fighting all those Saxons alone, thinking "My dad is a legend! I can never be like him". May father Travis lothbrok the great teach the kid well, so he will become a beast. 8:26 Well, Bjorn is Aslaug's son too btw. They changed it in the show though. And regarding her other sons...

Pagan people's who were converted to Christianity, a lot of the times would keep their superstitions but accept God as the true God. For a time there was a synthesis... which the Christian missionary's for the most part were alright with, they believe in God and the Nordic Pantheon, and the Missionary's take Norse mythology and make it support Christianity, like the fact after Ragnarok there would be a man and woman left to repopulate the Earth... which made it easy for the Missionary's to go 'oh that's Adam and Eve, we pick up the story now with our God'. Which was useful in converting the Germanic people's. But that synthesis faded after a few generations to just be 'God is God, Odin was a myth'.

Also, a lot of them didn't really convert. It was just a facade. Scandinavia became Christian mostly for political reasons, to ease trading with the continental Christians. Kind of like joining the EU today. The Christians tried to destroy the pagan traditions, but in many cases they did not succeed - in those instances they instead "adopted" that tradition and made it their own. Christmas and everything. Which isn't called Christmas in Scandinavia. It's Jul/Yule at the winter solstice they're celebrating. It's also interesting how the first man and woman in the Asa beliefs are named Ask and Embla.

Historically, Christians didn't think in the Middle Ages that there are many gods, but you're just supposed to follow one, or serve, worship. They believed the entities called gods by pagans, are idols, 'ungods'. Not gods of other people. That kind of thinking sounds more like Hinduism. Most likely they saw them as demons, Satan's minions. Because, this is what Bible still says - so it actually haven't changed. Though the idols, besides being on Satan's business, are idols according to Bible, the false gods that are the product of people's imagination, which the fallen angel and his servants then use to misguide people, to enslave people. Well, modern people are mostly pretty atheistic, they think there arent't gods, people are 'free' from them, free to do their will. There isn't supposedly anybody to be responsible to... And so, irresponsibilty festers in people's minds. But, actually, what is god for a person? It's something on which people put there faith and trust. So, money, health, food, love life (sex and erotics), entertainment. Ourselves. Most likely western people usually think they are the masters of their own destiny. They worship themselves. But we were not creating this planet we live on. It seems this planet is our sandbox, where we play without thinking the consequences, soiling the very sandbox we sit in, then crying when it's not fun to play in anymore. Even those who think there maybe is a creator of sorts (just 'he's quiet' and just 'monitors passively'.), think he 'is not entitled to intervene' to our daily choices and alues. We're so entitled... I wonder, where did we get such entitlement to do whatever we want, up to recklessness. Who cares. Who? God does. So every now and then he sends some of his 'fools' to say a discord to the symphony of man's self promotion. God isn't old, nor modern. He's eternal. He guides people to look things at those perspectives, not concentrating on winning glory, ranks or fame in this world. This world is gonna disappear, according to Bible. Well, maybe the world is not that far of it's end, if we now look at the global warming, destruction of rain forrests etc. Also, people are uniting through internet - and becoming vulnerable to those who control the servers, and bank accounts. Or the amount of weapons we've build. There still would be a possibility the turn a new leaf in the global warming, the polluting. We could still chnge the weapons to tools. If we wanted that. If we people are so good, why don't we want peace. With many gods, no gods, or anyway possible. We like to say we're on the side of peace, we dig it. Until we're insulted, or otherwise feel entitled to steal, kill, lie, cheat etc. With many gods, none or one. As long as we get to define, what are the gods, or how is the reality and cosmos where there's no good or bad, no God or Satan - only material stuff...? Or, if we think there's a God/god, he/she/it needs to be something we get to define. Like choosing in the supermarket, what would you like to have in your god/gods etc. Pimp up your god, make him/her etc. a creation of your design. Eh? After all, it can't be we're the creation of God's design. Right?

This time in history, the English was newly Christian. They were still a warrior culture. The rural areas of Britain were still worshipping old gods. Lol

I think one God's commandment is thou shalt not worship any other god. Or something along those lines. Which I interpreted as even chirstian god acknowledges other God's but doesn't want u to worship them. I think of it like other country's governments. Different gods doing their own way of doing things and trying to coerce humans to follow them. In a sense we are pieces in their game of life. I prefer this theory. We are a combination game/tv for God's as the auto system makes us evolve based on our actions and development and they can cause changes good and bad in the lives of people who believe and follow them because they grow in power with more belief that's their fuel. That way I can explain shit happens but if u work hard and gain knowledge and skills u can succeed in life
