Ragnar already told the story of Harbard to his kids. In the episode where Bjorn kills the bear and Ragnar sees young Bjorn running towards him. Right before that he's telling a story about when Thor came across a bearded ferryman that wouldn't let him pass, and then stands up and says his name was Harbard. He's says it to mock Aslaug. But if you just read the wiki for Harbard you will understand him a little better and there aren't any spoilers really. But most of the wierd visions you see in the show are mostly after old Norse tales that they portray in the show. That's why they can be confusing at times.

*The reason why Ragnar talks to a random severed head at the end is because of this Norse deity:* "Mímir (Old Norse “The rememberer, the wise one”) or Mim is a wisdom deity in Norse mythology. He is closely associated with a magical well of knowledge that bears his name, the Mímisbrunnr. At the conclusion of the Æsir-Vanir War he was sent to the Vanir along with the god Hœnir as part of a peaceful hostage exchange. Fearing trickery from the Aesir because of Hœnir’s foolishness, the Vanir beheaded Mímir and returned his head to Asgard. In order to keep Mímir’s wisdom, Odin preserved his head with magic so it could continue to provide knowledge and counsel as his advisor." He is still heavily affected from the withdrawals but the last scene makes sense even if you take those away and only take their religion/beliefs into account.

I think the point of Floki's vision, like Sithfurion said, is to show how prophesies can be flawed, misread or not given the full information as it is open to subjective interpretation. Like Floki can see Aslaug but does not know who she's with, where or even a specific time frame.

Rangers father also had that name. Sigurd Hring ruled Sweden and Denmark from 770-804 and Ragnar succeeded him. More interested in adventure he had Eysteinn placed as Jarl when he was gone. This is from Hervarar Saga one of the books that the series is loosely based on.

Rollo should have allowed a percentage of the boats to cross before pulling up the chain. It would have basically split Ragnars forces and the ones ahead would have had no way of rowing back making a future counter attack less powerful with fewer men and ships

9:00 - That vision Floki has when he apparently sleeps with Aslaug. I saw it explained on Reddit that it relates to a dropped storyline where Floki was going to become the seer - remember when the seer kissed Floki's hand ages ago? We're meant to think he has remote viewing/shamanic abilities so because Harbard is sleeping with Aslaug, Floki imagines it as if it's happening to him.
@Wonega6 жыл бұрын
my take on the visions and prophecy in the show is they are trying to make the viewer see the world how the Vikings might have with their belief systems while leaving room for doubt as some my have had, so it's always open for interpretation.

If you don't understand, I can help. This series is based on the legend/story of Ragnar and his sons. In a story/legend, you will have things such as gods and visions and mystical things occurring. This show is not based on the historical facts of Ragnar and his sons. It's a fictional take on characters based in historical fact. Hope that helps making sense of everything

I think the point of the show being ambiguous if gods exists or not is because that is the point. No one knows if gods exist or not and it depends on the character if gods exist for them or not. You're confused over if there are gods or not, and that is exactly how you should feel.

well Harbard kinda make sense in regards to breeding humans. It is known throughout Norse Mythology that Thor would occasionally breed entire populations that he loved in order to make them prosper and increase their numbers. The head that Ragnar is talking to is another reference to Norse mythology as it represents the story of Mímir, one of the Norse gods representing wisdom. according to the end of the story, Odin would preserve Mímir's head with magic in order for it to keep providing Odin with constant knowledge. Believing this, Ragnar is most likely trying to summon the knowledge of the gods so he can figure what to do next.

We can see the similarity between Ragnar's and Asalug's journeys and struggles with their addictions: Ragnar is dealing with his mental state and the pain the drugs bring him. Aslaug is dealing with her loneliness and her addiction to Harbard. Both cases takes their mind off the important things: Ragnar's mind is not into the battle as it should be. Asalug's is not into her sons, Harbard is gives her comfort but takes away everything else. Now we have to see how things will go, if they will manage to overcome their addictions and how... But yeah, the battle could be done a lot better: We should have attacked the two towers from the beach. Send a force to each bank and set them on fire. The Franks wouldn't be able to Flank us, because we would have arrows cover from the rest of our ship. And once the towers are down, it's game over, the Franks can send waves of infantry to shatter on our shields. Lagertha failed miserable as a leader as well: The moment she stepped into the swamp, it was clear that it was a trap: Rollo covered his backside that way, so that no ground force would e able to snick on him. So instead of retreating immediately and informing Ragnar, thus saving her entire force, she chose to commit suicide knowingly. And the results are that her entire force was annihilated, save for few. "Good call" Lagertha, you ran straight into a wall, hopping to shake a little bit.
@BhBc8f86 жыл бұрын
Well Ragner's the one in charge and like you said he's not at his best right now. and you're right it was out of character for her not to have noticed the trap, but there's a reason retreating is only used as a last resort so the opposing soldiers don't pick you off one by one since you're no longer fighting or retreating as a single unit. Defensive retreat is a thing but not easy with a force that small. And she didn't choose to commit suicide lol, i think they would've taken the tower and the first army if the second army didn't pop up behind them, that's probably why Rollo had them there in the first place.
@squashedeyeball6 жыл бұрын
Bhlack Bishop Well, it all depended on whether or not they were seen. Rollo didn't notice them at first, so if she retreated, she had good chances to get back the the ships without problems. But choosing to go forward and hope to remain unnoticed was a huge, careless risk... The deeper you get in the swamp, the worse your position will be. The chances that they would get close to the tower without alerting Rollo, when they moves slowly and make a lot of noise in the water, were very deem... It was a gambit between retreating quickly (And away from the range of the tower's archers), or going forwards into a tough battle from a spot of disadvantage... Still, even after the chain trick, I believe that Ragnar could still destroy Rollo's forces... Only the front row of his ships was destroyed. After the trick was played, everything should've been clear to him. But I guess that the army was in too much shock and disarray t hat it was impossible to peruse an attack... So he had to regroup and think of what went wrong.
@BhBc8f86 жыл бұрын
Lagertha's been in many battles, she should know the disadvantages of the swamp but she doesn't for whatever reason. Plus it's Lagertha, Ragner gave her job to do and she's going to see it through. But yeah they clearly underestimated Rollo and took an early L but idk i think they still should've kept going right then and there imo, those towers were ripe for the taking. But just the fact that their camp was attacked during the same time period showed how careless and unready they were. So who knows if they would've even been able to advance or not, but why tempt fate when you can just retreat to fight another day no matter how bad it looks :D
@melbeckles55756 жыл бұрын
squashedeyeball 🙋🏾 The Vikings never retreat at the first signs of danger or defeat though, whenever they attack even if they think they may lose they are warrior minded they going to fight first and die trying to get the win and Valhalla is their reward. They never go into a battle, see danger and think shit let's flee from the jump they only retreat if they see that they are overwhelmed by enemy forces and their men/ women are dropping like flies.
@squashedeyeball6 жыл бұрын
Bhlack Bishop You're right, sometimes you have to retreat and think things through. Well, Lagertha, as a commander and leader, failed... She should've known better, it's obvious that heading through a swamp in a suicide. So did our father, Ragnar, who didn't have the mind for the battle, yet she chose to jump into it... Harald failed as well in a way, because he was too passive: Didn't say anything, despite having a king position, and just went with whatever happens. Ragnar was in a bad state, Lagertha ignore clear warning signs and Harald acted like he was just a common fighter with no responsibility beyond his presence in the fight...

Harbard stuff is extremely simple, back in the day (long before American history) there were always groups that would sit outside of larger towns and cities and when the larger male forces disappear they turn up and take advantage of lonely women and larger food stores. Now, you have to remember...these are gullible people, what is easy to determine for you in this day and age was not so back then. A handsome stranger appears helps you with some chores, kids seem to like him acts all mysterious....probably a god...or a messenger. At a certain point, I genuinely don't know what clarity you guys are looking for. haha :P

You mean besides the fact that 3 women had the same dream about someone they never met and that he can somehow take away Ivar's pain?
@Necron00b6 жыл бұрын
Lot's of people have similar dreams, no reason they couldn't have just had similar dreams and assumed, because they are so superstitious, that it was the same dream and they saw the same person. As for Ivar's pain, as we've seen people who travel to different places often knew of different medicines, no reason he could not have just dosed Ivar with something. You also have to account for the fact these people consume huge amounts of alcohol and magic mushrooms, they are gonna imagine some stuff. haha :P
