eh, in the original myths Aslaug had powers but the relationship was a bit different as well. Ivar was also the eldest of her children so who knows how much they're changing. they did seem to imply some magical meddling when her character was introduced. the myths themselves arn't consistent so who knows.

not really. She wasnt lying about her being witch at all. She was after all told that by the Seer himself when he said to her that Ragnar was in danger by the magical/mystical world, and thus the Aslaug being witch thing. Based on that she was correct.

The Seer told Lagertha in season 1 that Ragnar is in danger of the magical world, right before he met Aslaug. Lagertha is known to take the Seer's visions as if they are set in stone. That is the reason she does not question Ragnar's fault.

Ugh that conversation between Ragnar and Ecbert was unbelievable. Favorite scene in the show. They're two guys who should be friends based on their minds alone, but can't be because of their births and where they're from. I loved how they got drunk and talked about the craziest shit, and questioned religion altogether. Everyone in that time period seems so devoted to their faith, that conversation was ahead of their time. And how Ecbert said if theres no Gods nothing has meaning or value, and Ragnar said maybe everything has value, which is sort of a nihilistic idea, that we create value where we want instead of it being predetermined. The actors have great chemistry too, really cool scene

Aaron you have so misunderstood everything. King Ecbert distroyed the village (to aethelwolf) in order to trap the nobles that were against him. Then he could imprison them (effectively getting rid of the competition). It was a long con and wasnt revealed til the scene where Ecbert smiles at his son and they agree that the plan had worked, ie get rid of the vikings and disgruntled noblemen i once swoop. King Aella is still king of Northumbria, which is not a part of Ecbert's kingdom. King Aella just doesn't have the same amount of power. Much of it was lost by yet another political move by Ecbert. Think GO and things become so clear :). Yes all of this is Ragnar's plan, not a spur of the moment thing.

Ivar is one of Ragnar's biggest weapon. People just rid him off because he's a cripple, but we all know the story behind him. The reason Ragnar said to act like a cripple was because no one else saw it as Ragnar did. Ivar is one of his biggest weapons and smartest out of his sons, but everyone rids him off as a cripple and would never expect HIM to be the conqueror. All Ivar had to do was act like he was a cripple -- all apart of Ragnar's true plan in the end.

@@becauseofobi-wan3543 What always bothers me is Lagertha’s justification for taking Kattegat. She knows Aslaug did not bewitch Ragnar, that his affair with her was completely his choice, and that it was actually Lagertha who forced Ragnar to choose between her and Aslaug, when he wanted them both. And then she’s surprised when Aslaug’s sons want revenge on her. I just hate how she passes herself off as the hero and everyone always seems to believe it, despite her being on the same level as Aslaug and the rest of them.

31:00 Aaron is actually right here. The first time Harbard visits Kattegat 2 boys are found dead in fishing nets in the sea. We see them brought into shore and their mothers crying over them. Also it's explained by Aslaug herself that she is a 'volva' - a female seer. She says this to Ragnar (can't remember what series) so she does see visions.

+Blind Wave Hey guys love watching your reactions and other stuff. I noticed you were not that sure of their motives and reasons so I took the liberty to explain :D King Ecbert deliberately killed the settlers so that he will have an excuse to clean up his own royal court and get rid of his inner opposition at the same time protecting his country from a wave of settlers who are in a way a ready army on enemy land should the vikings declare war ( he didn't kill them out of hate it was "just business"). Ragnar wanted to die but decided to do it in a manner that his death will mean something. His plan from the very beginning was to go to England and be killed. This is why he only brought old and and mostly week people. He wanted the strong people to be ready for his sons to round up and go on a revenge spree. His plan was to fuel his sons with the power of vengeance and to get Ivar familiar with England. He left the strong behind because he wanted them to have a ready army when they decide to avenge him. This is why he brought Ivar. He is the only one who is both worthy enough to be trusted to tell the tale of Ragnar and with the highest chance to be let go out of pity. For me at least the Ragnar and Ecbert dynamic is what made this series great. The only other successful example of this kind of relationship that I can think of is Heat with Pacino and Deniro. The difference is that with Pacino and Deniro the focus was on mutual respect while with Ragnar and Ecbert it is literally a strong friendship on a personal level while being grand enemies on a political and cultural level.

Ragnar has always been the one to believe you make your luck, you determine your own fate, not the gods. And, he knows he is done largely and he will soon die. So, he plans to die on his own term, beating what the gods has fated him, beating what the seer said - "you will die on the DAY the blind man sees you."

Yeah Aaron has been wrong before, but this time was just...I had to rewind that to make sure I heard him correctly. And I loved Lagertha up until that scene. I understand her hatred and jealousy, but Asluag literally gave her back what she wanted and was willing to leave for good. Killing someone with their back turned after you gave your word made me lose all respect for her. At least kill her face to face instead of lying about it and then lying to Ubbe and Sigurd about "I wanted it back".

No, the reason that Ecbert killed the farmers was to get rid of those who were against him. His son pretended to go against his father's orders in order to see who from the noble men would also go against Ecbert's orders, thus Ecbert can have an excuse to rid himself from them.

I don't like that Lagertha shot Aslaug in the back, as it doesn't seem to fit what we know of her character very much. Even when she took revenge on Kalf she looked him in the eye to do so. That said, I think Aslaug knew she was creating an impossible situation - if Lagertha let her live she risked her rallying an army against her, and she was already suspicious of her having mystical powers of some sort.

Some thoughts on things your missing. Saying a man was "bewitched" is a convenient way of not blaming a man for wronging you who has clearly wronged you. Second, your falling into the trap of thinking about what has happened from "your" sensibilities. Look at what has happened from the individual characters perspective. Ragnar doesn't see him raiding England as "evil" or him being in the wrong somehow. He doesn't see the world like that. After all this is the guy who "felt so bad about raiding England" that he immediately raided paris?? Eckbert did absolutely 100% order the destruction of ragnars settlement. It wasn't vengeance for athlestan sleeping with Judith (though that certainly didn't hurt the cause). It was a calculated political act. It served eckbert 4 fold. 1 It stopped the vikings from raiding his lands immediately. 2 it prompted Viking soldiers to help him militarily. 3. It revealed everyone in his court who was talking badly about him and gave him much needed reason to order their deaths. 4 it removed a beachhead from his shores of a clearly violent and almost certainly hostile force. For eckbert that settlement absolutely no questions asked had to be destroyed. Yes, ragnar did ask everyone to join him to attack england. But he knew no one would. He left kattegate after the failed raid in paris because he no longer had any support. Which is the same reason no one would sail with him. He knew this before he returned. He knew what he had to do, he just didn't want to do it.

not only was it a bitch move by Lagertha to kill Aslaug like that, it was so stupid to let her sons live.

NO SPOILERS. Im watching along with blindwave and Im on eric and shanes side when it came about the death of aslog. Lagatha is way to smart to do such a dumb thing. I hated aslog as well but lagatha was just not using her head. Aaron and calvin seem blinded by this. Hence Blindwave

I don't think it was dumb. I just think it was so rotten.

When I say dumb I mean, she should know that lagathas sons aka Ragnars sons will try to kill lagatha, forcing lagatha to fight the sons and potentially killing them or them killing her. Which puts a strain on the entire family between ragnar, the sons including Byurin (dont know how to spell the oldest sons name) and lagatha. It just wasnt a smart thing to do. I still lover her, but that was just a dumb choice she made that will eventually blow up in her face.

I lost all respect for her when she did that. I never liked Aslaug, but she literally gave Lagertha back Kattegat like she wanted and was even going to leave, so the fact that Lagertha killed her behind her back after lying to her AND then lying to Ubbe and Sigurd about her reason for doing it is what's making me cheer for Ivar to kill her. That'll piss off Bjorn but it's just something she shouldn't be able to get away with

I was rooting for Ivar and Ubbe so hard to get payback this season. (minor spoiler for later this season) Though it kinda bothers me how Hvitserk doesn't give a shit. I mean it makes sense for Sigurd (though I think he at least cared to some degree) as his relationship with his mother had become strained after the situation with Harbard. But Hvitserk is basically like "Eh."

Hvitserk also didn't seem to care much about Sigurd dying either. Then again, nobody cared about Sigurd.

Why did Lagertha have to kill her!? There was no point... So stupid, I didn't like her at all but she didn't deserve that. It's mindblowing and sad how people are still religious... And what? It's not Ragnar's fault, he IS being honest...
