It makes more sense - to me - that the show doesn’t spoon feed you all of the answers because Vikings occurs during the Dark Ages, where knowledge of the time was - and still is limited; furthermore, most of the series is influenced by Saxon and Norse legend, with a dabble of history.

Can't say I disagree with Eric on this one.
@ms_scribbles6 жыл бұрын
Alright, I'll say it one more time, and then just skip this reaction and wait for next week. Go research the history of this time. You will find no contemporary account of how Aethelwulf died. What that means is that he DIDN'T die in battle, or in any other violent way, because the chroniclers of the time would have written it down. The fact that they didn't means he died from a quick, sudden illness that they didn't find interesting enough to write about in detail. Personally, if they're going to pick a way for him to die, I'd rather they did it this way than some disease that made him shit himself to death or something equally humiliating.
@pcgaming49446 жыл бұрын

I completely understand the controversy of this episode; there were some parts i didn't like either like Rollo deus ex machina giving his army to Hvitserk (we might get an answer for that on 5B but its still forced and came out of nowhere) or the forced romance between Lagertha and Eathmund (again, came out of nowhere). There is also the issue of Alfred being crowned as king which was done pretty fucking fast (i still find forced that Aethelred gave out the crown just because his mother told him; even after Aethelwulf told him to listen to his mother this is fucking dumb) but i don't mind that much that part. About the bee death; i might be one of the 0.01% that didn't mind that part at all; Aethelwulf needed to die eventually anyways.

Okay, I've just watched the last two episodes and I loved them. I was emotional during Aethewulf's death. It was realistic, you could have died from literally anything. There was no proper medicine and hygiene was terrible (Vikings were better in that, I think). For some reason, when I watched Aethelwulf going from the throne room I thought he looked old and when he got stung I realised what is going to happen. I'm also glad he didn't die by the hands of Vikings. He didn't give in and died because of natural reasons. I even said Aye without too much thinking. I guess I really wanted see Alfred the Great a got excited. Sorry, Aethelred. You could be the general though.

@@Leonardo-xz9xl The time shenanigans are not at all comparable between the two shows. GoT-except between seasons-almost exclusively time skips in the later seasons when characters are traveling from place to place, because there is no need to show travel. Vikings skips years ahead in the span of one episode with the only indication being new castings. Literally in the middle of an episode, Vikings jumps like 10 years ahead. And it does this many, many times.

I hated Aethelwulf's death at first, but I appreciate it more now. It was wishful thinking to think Hirst was going to give him a heroic death or end his life with success and fulfillment. Aethelwulf had his positive qualities, but Hirst was committed from the beginning to making his life and lot as pathetic and humiliating as possible. And that continues after his death, with Judith undermining his lineage and legacy. And there's a lot of irony in the Ecbert/Athelwulf/Athelred lineage immediately losing control over the unified throne of England they established, with the Aelle/Judith/Alfred lineage actually gaining the power.

Eric wants to accept the weird plot points because he thinks they're being a "slave to history" but they take a lot of artistic licences with the show. It’s unsure how King Æthelwulf died. He was first recorded when Ecbert fought a battle in 825 and he died in 858, leaving him what ever he was when he was fighting with his father +33. It’s possible he died to poor health as an ageing man. But he didn’t die in combat that’s for certain. My question is, if it was a bee sting and he was allergic, would people in 858 know what the cause of that was. I guess the lack of a recorded cause of death gave Micheal the easy way of offing him around the right time for the next part of the story.
@garethlawton52786 жыл бұрын
Notable to add that Æthelwulf was a charitable and good king. “His care continued after his death, for he left provisions in his will for his successors to provide food, drink and lodging for one poor man per tenth hide of cultivated land in the kingdom.”

The Bjorn desert story line was trash it could have been good but it wasn’t we all can agree. The hole Lagatha and the Bishop story line was trash. The Bjorn and salmi princess storyline was trash. The Floki story line was boring af. The great things about this season was the fight scenes except the fight scene in s5 ep5 where Ivar came out of the Gutters and the English just stood there like puppets. The Alfred story line along with the Aethelwulf storyline was great except Aethelwulf bull shit death scene. In conclusion it fells like Michael Hirst only wrote 50% of the script for season 5 and other people wrote the other half. I love Vikings but season5 so far is questionable for me.

For me the only weird episode was 5x9, not because Atherlwulf dead was "too weak for him", but because the Alfred part felt so rushed. It felt like they must write Athelwulf fast out of the Story in order to make Alfred king so he can fight against Ivar in the next seasons. Also the "Paris-Stuff" was weird, in 5x8 Lagertha wins the battle, why do they wait and dont go to King Haralds town to finish them finally like Ivar will to it in the next episode probably? No, they wait like four weeks or something like this until Hvitserk travels from Kattegat to Paris and back. That part felt very rushed and not comprehensibly. Episode 6 & 7 werent bad I think they are slow, but they build up the story for the battle in 5x8. The final wasnt bad at all, okay "YoU CaNt hAvE viSiOnS oN tHE bAtTLeFieLd" is an agrument, but for me it worked and I'am fine with it, but that Ivar wins because of the plothole of the "Paris-Soldiers" is a thorn in my side. So besides 5x9 a solid season, with one of the greatest episode of the series (5x3) and the worst episode of the series (5x9).

I already knew Eric was going to whine about the death in this episode, hes so conditioned by those shitty teen soap operas from the CW that they forget that people, yes, even people considered of great importance also die by mundane things. ESPECIALLY in the past, when medicine and technology wasnt as advanced as it is today. People back in those days used to die from the common cold all the time. Allergic reactions as well. This show is based on real people. Sure they add a little hollywood here and there to make things entertaining, but its the details like this that remind you of actual history and how far we have come as a society. Hell, people still die today from allergic reactions. lol.
@limepie30256 жыл бұрын
I think Eric knows people die randomly sometimes, but it's a story. The point is to convey emotion to the audience, not show how people die. It's a lot more impactful if you follow a story than telling the audience "Hey, did you know people died of bee stings all the time in these times" and robbing all the emotion out of a death. And don't say it wasn't supposed to be emotional because the show clearly wanted emotion with Aethulwulf saying stuff like "The angels are already here".

Athelwulf can now join the hall of those who were done dirty in Vikings along with the Moors and every Christian bishop that got their throat slit.

Unless history accurate, Athelwulf dying from a damn bee was so dumb. And why would you swipe away a bee like that!? And burning down the temple, whoever did it, are they not pagan anymore? So stupid, and then just attacking the guy with the knife. Poor mom but good thing it was him who died and not the other guy. Show just keeps getting worse and worse since a long time ago. I'm only watching it to complete it, it's not really good. Also now I want that psycho Margaret gone. Now she just sees shit? And the bishop fell in love with Lagertha I guess. And WHY do you not pause when someone leaves!? Judith showed wisdom by not giving up on Alfred and saying it's God's will.

i loved the first half of Season 5 but hated the second one. It's really a shame because everything but the story and the writing felt like a step up.

Kinda feel like the golden era of tv is over. Game of thrones writing is super bad, viking went bad, westworld went bad, The walking dead went sour... huge tv phenomenons are crumblings. Especially now that AT&T acquired Time Warner, they said they need tos top niche shows and appeal to a bigger and braoder audience meanign HBO will now take less chances for niche titles (like they did with game of thrones and westworld) and concentrate more on shows that appeals to everyone.

Success breeds arrogance. Tv shows need more executive meddling ironically. Some of the best stuff comes out of hardship and compromise. Giving shows blank checks for creators to do whatever they want... you end up like now.

Not at all, the golden era is far from over. You are just watching the wrong TV shows. There are dozens of other ones that are actually interesting: Legion, American Gods, Mindhunter, The good fight, Atlanta, Glow, Peaky Blinders, The americans, Billions, The good place,The Handmaid's Tale, The expanse... those are very interesting shows.

Wait. Aaron wanted Bjorn and Lagertha to attac Ivar whilst they’re weak. What he doesn’t understand is that they’re the ones who want to prevent the war, they don’t want to fight so obviously they’re not going attack Ivar and Harald.

The characters are based on real humans in history, that’s why he died to a bee sting i think.

I never understand why people don't like Aethelwolfs death...this was a time where allergies were a huge killer, it's like people can't decide whether they want this to be a straight fantasy or a dramatisation of reality.

The majority of people from my experience didn't mind how he died.. just how it was portrayed in the show

It's not the way he died, the problem it's that it was depicted in the dullest and most meaningless way.

Seriously, people, calm your tits. "Vikings" is not a documentary, it's just a TV show vaguely INSPIRED by "true" historical events, norse legends and the imagination of the screenwriters. There are dozens of theories about how JFK was actually killed, and that just happened in 1963, you want "historical accuracy" about things that happened in the 9th century? Nobody knows exactly how Aethelwulf actually died but the only sure thing is that HE DID NOT DIE IN GLORIOUS BATTLE (sorry fanboys, that was the "cool" easy obviously dumb way to kill him). I loved the character and he was one of my favourites, it was sad to watch him die like this, but guess what: it makes sense. Life is not fair, he was a good person and a good king, but good people doesn't always get the good things they deserve. Let the showrunner and the writers do their job, and if the show is so unbearable to watch JUST DON'T WATCH IT ANYMORE. Nobody is forcing you to watch, I stopped watching countless TV shows because I thought the story wasn't interesting anymore.

The showrunner and the writers has become lazy and aren't doing their job well though. Are people not allowed to criticize the way the show has gone because it's not their job to make it? Don't you want good shows to stay good? Fans aren't angry just because of how terribly they handled Aethelwulfs death though, the writing became terrible in season 5. If enough people start to criticize shows that turn to shit then maybe future shows learn from it and wont face the same fate.

Shane is such a dork. I appreciate what he brings to the group but not once did he address any of Eric or Aaron's points of concern. He always danced around what he interpreted from the show and not from an unbiased point of view and true understanding of the writing or character motives. I truly appreciate and admire Eric's understanding of the writing and development of characters on most shows. Eric, you should just roll out a monthly video talking about movies. I would love hearing you break down screenplays, shots, acting, etc... Aaron and Calvin are great and contribute a well balanced perspective as well. Shane, I think, needs to base his opinions on what is projected on the screen and through dialogue, not through how he fills in the gap left open by bad writing. Also, slow down your speech down and let others finish talking. Too often does Calvin get talked over and we miss the opportunity to hear his unique perspective/understanding. Still love you guys and appreciate your content.
