There's still much to explore. Unfortunately, historiography focusing on European history in the past 200 years, has been almost always from the same point of view and contexts, generalizing (or overshadowing) everything else. The Baltic area has a wonderful history that should definitely be explored, and other areas as well, of course. Estonian and Finnish Iron Age and Middle Ages is a fascinating subject, as well as the study on Finno-Ugric and Balto-Finno languages; Lithuania has wonderful symbologies quite similar to the Balkan and Icelandic 1500s-onwards symbols and sigils; The Iberian Pre-History and Bronze Age is (not surprisingly) filled with cultural similarities with those of Western and Northern Norway; The widespread cult of horned figures, heroes and gods of the mediterranean area, etc. There's always the very sad idea that a particular culture is exclusive to one people at one time, but every cultural detail has been shared by hundreds of cultures for thousands of years. Hi from Germany. I have been watching your videos for a few weeks now and i really think -for me-this is the best channel to get some academic knowledge about our beliefs. I like your way of sharing knowledge with us, and i really like your a bit more serious/souveran vibes. You dont talk just to hear yourself talking and i think thats awesome. Im a 39 year old woman and mother and finally released my pagan heart after being manipulated and scared by abrahamic dogmatic beliefs for all my life. I always felt the presence of spirits and deities around me in nature and within myself. But it was a long struggle to really break free from monotheism. Of late, I've seen many people curious about that lol. Cockerels and Hens has been a cultural-decoration theme among my family, on my mother's side. Both in Old Norse Mythology and Lusitanian Mythology (and Portuguese Folklore) these animals play the role of rebirth and linked to the afterlife, as well as symbols of renewed light. They are death and reincarnation, often linked to the Underworld. Although, I doubt my most recent ancestors and family members were aware of this (I myself wasn't aware of it until a few years back, and these types of cultural-decorations haven been among the family as far as we can register it). It's funny to see how meanings in particular themes in cultures are forgotten, but not the themes themselves, and they remain through the generations. They become a sort of unconscious significance, and we perpetuate it by still including such things in our life, without even remembering the origins. 6:41 This is what one voiced out at a lecture on Viking clothes (history of materials) at Midgard in Borre (Vestfold) some years ago. One attendee asked what social standing did the materials come from. The lecturer or book author embarassingly admitted it was more of the higher social strata. Many attendees, including myself, thought the lecture was a cough out of the same...Tja! People want more of the life story of the ordinary Scandinavian person in the Viking era.

Indeed, and sadly, the great majority of surviving evidences always comes from one very specific social strata: that of the aristocracy. The regular folk has often been in the shadows before the internet-age (even today, there's always an inclination to know more about celebrities' lives than anyone else). This really tells us a thing or two about the way our societies are built: we know more about the smallest percentage of the population, rather than the great majority of the people. There's still this unconscious collective idea that the wealthy are more important. When it comes to Viking Age society, it is indeed very hard to know any reality outside that of the aristocracy, as it was a highly statigraphed society.

The graveyard on the island of Saaremaa is said to be distinctly Viking and dates to 650 - 700 A.D. Arith just said it was dated to 750 A.D. As far as I know, it possibly dates to as early as 650 A.D.

Really interesting, as always, Arith. About the shields on the boats, it looks to me that the shields are just stacked tidily and easily accessible for the men to pick up when disembarking, rather than actually attached to the side of the vessels. :)

Before I go further into the video...about how long can you last in bed...would you mind of I sent you an infusion? Or I can write you the ingredients, so you can make that yourself? It's pretty easy, equal part of chamomile (Camomilla matricaria), rose buds (Rosa centifolia), lemon verbena (Aloysa citrodora), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), with added basil (Ocimum basilicum) and lavender (Lavandula angustifolia). I added the latin names to make the research easier, since I only know the names in English and Italian. Last time I did it, "one part" was a deciliter worth of herbs, and the last two were a full spoon each. Every single herb has its medicinal properties, but also a magical one, and both can be quite helpful. If you are able to put your hands also on some pieces of orange peel, it adds that fruity taste to the infusion that can boost it up. Okay, I'll keep going on with the video 😁

Thank you for the video Airth, I think the greatest shame of historical artefacts is that they will most often come from those who could store well their clothing, or their graves were gilded. The ordinary and even middle classes used out their materials and passed down what they had until it was worn away. They couldn't afford to bury or preserve these things, perhaps if time travel is ever possible we will learn much, but who knows the trouble that could cause in itself! I just worship the Gods and Goddesses of Asgard in our times. Asatur is actually a modern ideology. Someday we will get a Holy Scripture/text. So many of our people are returning to the faiths of our Ancestors. I found the Gods and Goddesses of our ancestors in 2016 at 57 years old. The timing of this post blows me away, as much of it parallels the rabbit hole I've fallen down regarding the Ynglingasaga, some historic claims that Odin (or, perhaps AN Odin) was originally a king in the region of Turkey during the Bronze Age and the rune Yng being one used in the modern Unicode. Yeah....REAL deep rabbit hole :) Anyway, one certainly has to wonder at the similarities between the ancient Turkish runes and myths and the Scandinavian runes and myths.

Interesting you say that. There's an ongoing belief that the god Odin was originally from the Middle East, introduced in the Germanic areas due to the massive migrations of those peoples back in the 1st century BCE, forced out by the Romans. But these migrations also occurred earlier, all the way to Finnland. It's not just Odin that shows surprising similarities with Middle Eastern (and Iranian) pre-Islamic deities: before the WWII Norwegian historians and amateur archaeologists (and other Europeans) were conducting an interesting study about the similarities between pre-historic rock carvings of boats in the Middle East, with those of Bronze Age Scandinavia (and other such themes). Sadly, with the great war, such studies were abandoned, mostly due to the political and racial ideologies of Nazi-Germany, which was then deeply rooted in Norway.

According to sources Odin's tribe may originally have come from Iran (!) and founded a huge kingdom across Eastern Europe, ending in the city called ASGARD in ASIA east of what today is the Don. He attempts to conquer the VANIR people east of the Don in Vanaland, but fails, and they exchange hostages, three of whom are Frey, Freya and their father, Njord the Rich. First Njord and then Frey (or Yng, a kenning, also the rune Ingwaz) inherit Odin's Yngling kingdom in Sweden, founding their royal dynasty. Am I reading all of this correctly? Please correct if I am wrong. Tracing back farther one uncovers a plethora of similarities between runes/alphabets and myths of all the cultures Odin's tribe (Turks? Scythians?) came into contact with during his migrations. This all started when I noticed how similar are the Nordic runes to those of Old Turkey and other ancient peoples, although I don't know who originally borrowed from whom. And THAT all stemmed from learning that there is a Unicode block that includes a variant of the rune Ingwaz, among others.

@@spikenhammer1324 My "research" is a rabbit hole of trying to understand why the ancient Scandinavian runes currently used by modern pagans are so similar to those used at various times in history all across Asia and Europe in nearly every nation and now there is a "runic block" of computer Unicode. It's a fascinating example of how symbols evolve through the ages - almost as if they were alive, at least culturally. The Ynglingasaga, which supposedly explained the history of Swedish and Norwegian kings, was written by Snorri Sturluson (1179-1241). It likely is a good example of how myths in ancient times so easily got mixed up with fact. Snorri perhaps conflated the Asir (house of the Gods) with Asia and the Troja’ region with Turks, because they were Turks in his own lifetime. And yet, modern Swedish historian Sven Lagerbring backed him up in an obscure book stating that Odin was a Turkish king and Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, in a book called "The Search for Odin," claimed metal belt holders, rings and arm bands dating from 100-200 A.D. found in excavations around the mouth of the Don River were almost identical to Viking equivalents found in Gotland, Sweden. If YOU can throw some light on this, kindly enlighten ME, because oh my goodness!

Everything that deals with archaeological data and material culture, especially the most recent studies dealing with grave artefacts and the evidences on temples. Sadly, the great majority of evidences are from the cults and religious expressions of the aristocracy, so we don't get to know much of anything concering the belief systems of the great majority of the population. However, I suggest always looking into folklore of the countries and local folklore as well, which holds important ideas that can be traced to the more animistic belief systems of the "common folk", and compare it with the sources available, historical, archaeological and contemporary sources.

I have to say. I live in the Rocky Mountains in Alberta. My neighbour and myself go to the mountain areas and I see branches and tree limbs that have fallen and I see ruin symbolism everywhere. I think that is definitely how they got the language of the landscape 👍

@Supermanrs you should make your own set. I bought colored modeling clay at Walmart, formed the runes and baked them in my oven. They are awesome. I pray to Wotan by spreading the runes in a row of 5x5 (you must add the blank rune discussed by Robert Blum) and those runes close to the blank rune have a stronger effect than the ones far away. I will have to make a video. Praise to the Gods and Goddesses of Asgard!

@@molotulo8808 Maybe someday I will make myself a set. I usally use either the set my wife bought me or the set that my brother in law made for me out of resin. Yeah I usually do either a 5 rune reading or a 9 rune reading. I also use tarot cards and have worked out so that I can use some of the same layouts that I use with tarot cards with my runes. But I am always trying out new layouts for both runes and tarot. I also often incorporate my pendulum into my rune and tarot card readings to help clarify the results of my readings.

I love and culture and i'm part of it, but i can't ever consider that this religion, or faith, or whatever anyone would like to call it, is real. I'm a cultural theist, but it doesn't go any more further than that because there isn't any god. But i think that this says a lot about this belief system. In comparison to when i was christian, i had complete control over my thoughts and consideration and consciousness, which i used to get to truth, solutions, passions. I love the gods and i talk to them from time to time, but i know clearly that they aren't real. What i cherish most is the gratitude for everything and the love for everything that you have as a pagan.
