Gyimes, Transylvania, Romania, where Uncle Viktor, the village tool maker makes a wooden rake-head and a scythe handle in his small workshop using simple tools handed down through generations.
Uncle Victor is charming. The film is delightful.

I've worked outdoors all my life , repairing and making tools from the hedge row with a knife , billhook , hammer and bit of saw blade . I would have treasured Viktor . I hope God does .

I'm a keen scyther, and make some of my own equipment including a wildwood snath and a hayrake. Such a shame that there were not other young men standing in line behind Viktor to learn his ancient skills and continue them. Your documentaries are delightful!

Thank you Ruby. The modern world is, inevitably, moving in over there but some still treasure the old ways and realise that all that knowledge should not be lost but they are few and far between. I can't tell you how light and well balanced Viktor's rakes were.

If only I'd known his time was to be so short I would have tried so much harder! We too spent some precious time with Viktor and Anna while their cow obligingly calved next door. I read your piece and really the two should sit together somewhere. What a precious part of the world.

thanks for sharing. I took part in the Haymaking Festival in 2011 and we spent a great afternoon visiting Viktor-basci and making tines with him. Several of us bought rakes to bring back, including myself and, as a rake maker, I learned some useful techniques from watching him work. Lovely to have his craft and personality preserved like this. I wrote about our time in Transylvania on my blog www.stevetomlincrafts.wordpress.com/tag/transylvania
