My Husband and I purchased a renovated apt on the Avenida da Republica in 2018 and absolutely love it. We feel like we're on the edge of the touristy area right by Jardim do Morrow, Serra Pillar (the monastery), the cable car, and the beautiful Pt Luis bridge. We don't have a car and have become comfortable with the buses as well as metro. There is a small Mini Presso grocery right accross from us, as well as a Contenente and a Pingo grocery a few metro stops away, and the bigger grocery at El Cortes Ingles. We live on the first floor above a cafe that serves excellent coffee and Portuguese traditional food. We also have excellent views of the river all the way to the Arrabida bridge. We looked around Porto for only a few months before before realizing we could get exactly what works best for us right here. We've also met some people who found their dream homes in Bonfim, which we also really like. Frankly, just about all the neighborhoods have something to offer thats unique. There is so much to love about this city!

Great video about my city but, you miss some key points, Gaia has two shopping malls, in almost every village you have a median size supermarket like pingo doce, continente, lidl etc. You don't have to walk that much to find a supermarket. Public school's give free books and money for school material. We have a big park called Lavandeira, a zoo quinta de santo Inácio, and a biology Park called parque biologico de Avintes, amazing river boat trips, river beaches ⛱, that's so much more in Gaia to see.

Gaia actually named the entire country. In the past, Gaia was called "Calle", the port of the city became the city of Porto. the city of porto was becoming more important that Cale itself, and the two cities were caled Portuscalle. In XII century the county of Portucalle was given to a french knight from the house of burgandy. the name Calle cames from the galician people that lived in galicia and northern Portugal, with Bracara Augusta (today's Braga) was the main city.

Also, the beaches are right in the corner if you are living close to Porto, and either if you are living 10 or 15 minutes far away by car. Hi Josh and Kaylie, we’ve been in Porto one month now, so exciting, Love it! When we were looking at properties to buy I asked to see apartments in Gaia because the prices seemed cheaper. Our real estate agent/friend showed us a couple units as requested but she said, ‘Really, I think you’ll be happier in Porto’. We’re here now and we agree that Porto is best for us. As new residents in Portugal, Porto has all that we love about an area to live in. Having said that, for a really big grocery shopping day we go to either Matosinhos, or we go to Gaia to the Continente Hyper Store up there-it’s like a giant Walmart at the Gaia Continente! We were at the Gaia Shopping center for hours! Side note: we are trying living without a car, it’s not a problem for us using Uber or Bolt...sometimes it seems cheaper for two people to get a bolt than to pay for two people to use public transport. (Just signed up for the Porto Cartão so maybe transport will become cheaper). Great video, as always.
@ExpatsEverywhere3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Lisa. Yea, we find Porto to simply be more convenient for living and enjoying what it's like to be in a city. Thank you. I am trying to move to Portugal and the feedback about Porto has been very helpful. I didn't know for sure which area to move to, but I have heard so many wonderful things about there that I believe that's the place for me. Do you have a vehicle? How does vehicle insurance work there and how much does it cost? Of course I understand one's driving record will affect that, but I'm just looking for a ballpark figure. Congratulations on your move and I hope you find a beautiful home. Carl

With the "Andante" monthly signature , you have acess to nearly all public transportation (trains, buses and light rail) across the whole Porto Metropolitan Area (17 municipalities), for just €40 a month. It's hard to imagine a situation when Uber and Bolt are cheaper alternatives. Of course, in some specific situations they are far better, but not so much for the price.
@ExpatsEverywhere3 жыл бұрын
@@Mpl3564 That is of course if someone gets the monthly card. We have the Andante card but quickly realize we didn't ride enough of a monthly basis to make it worth the €40. So instead we load our card with 10 trips for €12 and we use that for about 2 weeks before having to reload. - Josh & Kalie
@Mpl35643 жыл бұрын

I love all the Gaia beach towns and great seafood. It’s more of a locals “village” experience and Gaia locals say the same. There are almost no tourists in Gaia apart from the riverside area. The big shopping mall with the best food court I’ve ever seen is in Gaia with beautiful views of Porto. Da Terra vegan restaurant is there plus another location in the wine cellar river area. Want an affordable detached house? Gaia is where it’s at. People are living on top of each other in Porto, it seems to me. I love Porto though, don’t get me wrong! Just curious, what about Cidade de Maia? Is it worth a look? A video?

We haven't spend any time up there so it's hard to say if it's worth a look. We won't be doing a video about it any time soon I'm afraid. - Josh & Kalie

Gaia is 3rd largest municipality in population, not land area like you mentioned. I feel like you focused a bit too much on Av. da Républica, which represents like 5% of Gaia area? Gaia is much larger than that, with areas that are more rural and where the land is much more flat than near by the river. There are also more small sized cities inside the municipality if you looking for something between big city and rural. Anyways, you focused on Av. da Républica and mentioned that prices are much cheaper than Porto. I dont think that's true. Av. da Républica seems to have prices at same level as Porto, probably even more expensive with all the new buildings. Overall, Gaia is cheaper because of the areas that I mentioned, that brings down the average housing price of the municipality. In the end you make a very silly (in my opinion) comparison with Matosinhos. I dont think the two are comparable. Of course Matosinhos has a much better vibe/feel. Matosinhos is where the upper class families that work in Porto metropolitan areas live. It's like comparing (on a smaller scale) upper east side, NY with Bronx, NY.
@ExpatsEverywhere3 жыл бұрын
You're right 3rd largest municipality by population. The reason there was a focus on that area is because that's an area that we know the bulk of our audience (foreigners) will be interested in, not everyone, but a majority. It's a very long stretch that's well connected to Porto by Metro as you know and therefore it's great for those that do not want to own a car. The reason that we made the comparison to Matosinhos is because that was the video we did before this one and we had several people as about the two as alternatives to living in Porto city. So it's not silly at all, it's just in context for those that follow the channel. - Josh & Kalie

Just a small clarification. The current name is Gaia. The name "Vila Nova de Gaia", which we still use a lot, means "New Village of Gaia", which hasn't been true for over a couple of decades now, since it's now a municipality, as you pointed out. Great that you mentioned the chilly water. A fact that gets ignored much too often!

Gaia was granted "city" status many centuries ago, only shortly after Porto. By number of inhabitants, it is larger.

Hey hey guys!! Great video! 🤜🤛😁 I don't know if someone already told you but... People in Porto says "mais vale uma rua no porto q'a Gaia toda!" which is hilarious when heard fast with the oporto accent having a kinda word joke 🤣😅 but yeah, I'll not translate here 🤣😆needto ask liz! But with this being said Gaia in area terms might be a good place to invest 👍👌 Cheers to all the crew 🥃🍺🍷🍻👌😊😎

@@alexandreoliveira5451 Thank you. I really don't know. I was last in Portugal during the Beirut Civil War in 1982. The people were wonderful which is why I have always wanted to return. I didn't care much for the congestion of Lisbon and didn't have a lot of time to visit the rest of the country. It is a hard choice to leave your homeland.

@@carlrupp392 Carl, im 44, i worked in South Africa, Angola and China. I emigrated early to retire early, trust me, really trust me... with that income, you will be happy anywhere in Portugal 😅 I am a northern guy, so im not so keen about Lisbon or Algarve, i like it but it is just not my thing! Of course if i was single, i would choose Algarve rigth away (or Lisbon). But.. think about this: why pay 1200usd for a old apartment when for the same money tou can have a House completely modernized with swiming pool (thats what i have living 20 miles outside Porto). I have a nice eletric car, 2 kids and i spend a average 3700 euros per month, and.. when i want to make tourism... i just choose destiny and drive Think about it

Carl, that's plenty of money to live anywhere in Portugal to be honest. If you're single and looking to socialize and meet people, places like Lisbon, Porto, Braga, Coimbra, Aveiro, Matosinhos, Lagos should be okay. Honestly, there are many places but finding other singles your biggest pools will be in the biggest population center. - Josh & Kalie

You can live as a king with that kind of money pretty much anywhere in Portugal. You mention you are disabled, that money is enough for a luxorious t1/t2 (since you mention you live alone), eat out pretty much everyday and, if you need, afford someone to take care of you 24/7.

You do realize most people who work in Porto live in Vila Nova de Gaia?. So its nothing new, Vila Nova de Gaia is massive in Population for many years due to it being way cheaper, houses are modern and your close to highways to Lisbon and other locations, you got everything near home, like supermakets, bakerys, farmacies etc Porto is almost a ghost town nowadays in most of its streets no one lives there due to inflation, tourism, and old houses wich werent renovated by the owners. And you shown a part of the city wich is in Candal and is near the cellars and an old disco called Rocks where nothing is for sale. Besides that some unrealistic prices of apartments in Gaia in the video, for 100k you dont buy anything in the center, and most apartments will be old and small. Realistic prices due to inflation of tourists buying houses and apartments range from 130k to 260k for a t1 and t2. You dont need a car to go to the beach in Gaia, you got the bus to go there, its the same for living in the best places in Gaia, only locals mostly know the city as you dont have much knowledge about it because Gaia isnt just the beach, the tourist riverside or Avenida da Republica, there are buses to go everywhere, theres metro wich is getting expanded in Gaia. Avenida da republica is just the one of the most expensive places to live in Gaia, the beach is just for rich people nowadays and in the river its just tourism related business. You need to know the locals, gather more information with them before releasing these kind of videos. Because every Porto district resident knows that Matosinhos isnt walkable, its a huge city as well but you do need a car to live in there. You dont go to Norteshopping walking for example, and working in Porto city from Matosinhos is further then from Gaia.
