Hands down THE funniest interview I've watched in my 50+ yrs, re-enjoyed countless times since watching its original airing, it never fails to have me laughing out loud. Gary MacDonald's Norman Gunston is absolutely a national treasure and Sally Struthers is adorable in her genuine good-natured bewilderment at the situation she finds herself in.
@SY-ok2dq11 ай бұрын
This one is probably well remembered because of how much Struthers laughs and is a great sport about it. There were others who failed to get the humour and those who appeared to be annoyed (Chevy Chase). The Elliott Gould one is memorable for how much he stares at Gunston - you can tell he doesn't realize and is just baffled by this bizarre and seemingly clueless guy.

The comedic timing was all good in this interview of October 1975. Ms Struthers overheard his quip about being on drugs. You could sense the attraction she had for him by the end. Michael Parkinson later commented on this in an interview. The comb over hairdo and patched up shaving nicks was one of Gary MacDonald's comedic devices as an interviewer. Much loved in the late seventies in Australia and he did win the (gold) logie (1976) for The Norman Gunston Show which included the interviews.

We talked about Norman, who was funny, brave and outrageous, and Garry spoke about the personal toll it took on him. Unfortunately, the next night in Karratha he was attempting to do his floorshow in front of teams celebrating netball and AFL grand final wins, and they were oblivious to him. It was the wrong crowd. Halfway through Delilah he stopped singing, shouted at the crowd and left the stage, never to return. By the time we finished the set, he was on his way back to Perth. A lovely man, unassuming, who could actually play blues harmonica unlike Norman's suck and blow. I was so happy he had further success with Mother and Son with the late Ruth Cracknell.

@@mrmockatoo6786 that's a bit sad. What did he shout to the crowd?

@@TheTruthKiwi Mind you it was over 40 years ago but something to the effect that they were rude and ignorant, which they were. It was sad because the night before at Port Hedland was huge with an audience eager to be entertained.

She 'gets it' right off the bat, and makes it work.
