To everyone wondering why Jack didn't just keep the card afyer being patted down, later when Daniel is taking the card from Merrick we see a guard going over Jack with a hand held metal detector. If he still had the card the metal detector would have gone off. They had to keep passing it to prevent it from getting scanned.

Like yeah they successfully get away with the card, but Woody Harrselson's evil twin character had told the guards to call him "when they started acting like monkeys". The guards couldn't spot the card but they could spot _tells_ that the Four Horsemen had grabbed the card. Which then allowed the bad guys to set in motion the next part of their plan. It seems like a lot of people are hating on this scene but I don’t understand why. To me this scene has always been fun and enjoyable to watch. I’m not saying everyone has to like it, but it’s almost like the majority of people saying it’s stupid haven’t even watched the movie. So, here’s some context. Basically what’s happening is the main four characters were sent to this lab to steal a powerful computer chip (or something of the sorts). The main issue they face is the giant metal detector outside of the room, because if they walk through it with the computer chip the alarm would go off. Now, these four are magicians, and what they decide to do it stick the computer chip onto the playing card so they can pass it to one another IN CASE they cause suspicion and get a pat down. Which, surprise surprise they act suspicious, the computer has an error pop up, and the security guards are ordered to pat them down to make sure they didn’t steal anything/mess with the computer. The main four are able to hide the playing card, and then at the end they silently coordinate an improv plan/diversion to get the computer chip through the metal detector. Making the security guards think it was actually spare change in the wallet that was setting off the alarm rather than the stolen piece of hardware.

So I think the main part where this scene fails is right at the first pass when we don't see where Wilder was taken off to. If they'd just included an indication in the shot that he was being led over to a person with a handheld metal detector in his hand and *then* be given the shot where he ditches the card to Atlas, I think there would be so much less confusion about why they were passing a card around. We're two minutes into card passing before we actually see a metal detector in a guard's hand in a shot, so the audience isn't really given a chance to connect "They're passing the card to avoid the metal detector" before we're already committed to being confused why the horseman who just finished their clothing search just passed it off to another horseman who's still mid-search. From the first moment the viewer sees a clothing-search completed Wilder pass the card to still-being-searched Atlas, the viewer thinks "Jack was in the clear, why did he pass it?" That said, I still think they passed the card way more than necessary. Especially when they found some pretty good hiding places on particular horsemen (Atlas' jacket, Lula's shoe) that the card seemed to be sticking to and security wasn't spotting, so leaving it in the hands of one horseman in such a spot and then only passing it off to another horsemen at the metal detector search seems like it would make way more sense. Especially because a lot of the tricks they're doing are the type that only work from one angle, or through directing the attention of the live audience, when they're in an environment heavily monitored by cameras.
