Babu Bhai and Sarru's deductions of the kinds of services an aircraft carrier would have available are basically spot on. Doctors, engineers, mechanics and more, since an aircraft carrier is effectively a floating city.

Yes. And don't forget the Chefs & KItchen hands & Cleaners! But Babu is right to worry about a puncture. The pilots do too! Amongst a multitude of other potential variables... Amongst all of the electronic sophistication there's still an important role for a big brass Bell, and EVERYBODY appreciates the eternal beauty of a Rainbow. :)

@@michaelg2529 Speaking of punctures, anything loose on the deck is a danger to people and aircraft. I've heard that periodically a large number from the crew will walk the length of the craft side by side looking down and picking up and removing any debris, nuts, bolts, scraps, etc. Anything under the wheels can be shot out like bullets, damaging planes and machines and crew. It also makes a pleasant change of scene for crew members that spend their days working in compartments indoors on the ship at their assignments.

I just had to smile when Raeen mentioned that it must be more than 5 stories tall and Sarru said that he didn't think so - please tell them that an aircraft carrier is 10 stories underneath the flight deck, and that the tower on top of the flight deck is an additional 6 stories (not including the mast). They're truly massive ships. Source: have served aboard a couple of them

That was my thought exactly about educating them as to how the aircraft are launched and assisted with safe landings since the runway is so short. I am not sure if they realize the workings of that. Aircraft carriers use a short runway so the plane is launched using a steam catapult. 12:15 That's why you see the steam coming up from the deck after the plane takes off. The rope that catches the plane when it lands is a steel cable and each plane will have a hook on the bottom to grab the cable.

The first area shown where the sailor is steering is the Navigational Bridge, and is where the ship is controlled from. The sound of a bell can be heard clearly in a noisy environment, so the bell is rung in a specific manner to indicate certain things, one of which is the time on a 4-hour cycle starting at midnight. The bell is struck on the half hour, with the number of strikes indicating the time up to 8 bells in groups of 2. Thus, 08:30 would get 1 bell, 09:00 would get 2, 09:30 would be 2 + 1, 10:00 would be 2 + 2, etc. Every command or action on the bridge is logged. The sailor writing in the log after sounding 1 bell would have been logging that she did so. The second area with the 3 men was Primary Flight Control. As an aircraft carrier is a floating airport, think of this as the control tower. The "smoke" on the flight deck is actually steam. In a nutshell, steam under pressure is used to force a piston under the deck forward, pretty much throwing the plane off of the carrier. The "ropes" are called "arresting lines" and are actually steel cables hooked up to hydraulics which (kinda) slowly slow down the aircraft when the hook on the tail of the plane catches it. The hand signals are somewhat stylized, but are used for a visual indication that the person has verified that the plane is hooked to the catapult properly, that he is checking that personnel are clear, etc. When he goes to one knee and points, he is indicating to the person on the catapult control that it is safe to launch the aircraft. There can be upwards of 5500 persons on board the largest aircraft carriers...3000+ to actually run the ship, and 2000+ to fly, repair, and manage the aircraft. The first group is always on board, the second group will come and go with the aircraft. Anything which you would find in a small town with an airport can be found on board a carrier. Electricity is generated, fresh water is distributed, sewage is treated, etc. There are mess halls, barber shops, recreational areas, sleeping quarters, weight rooms, repair shops, a full hospital, onboard cable TV, a library, a store for the crew, laundry services, etc. Munitions and fuel to replenish the aircraft are kept on board. There are refrigerators, freezers, storage areas, etc to keep the crew fed.

Carriers are floating naval bases. They are based on the idea of forward projection( the ability to project the military wherever needed). They have thousands of crewmen and officers on board. The truly impressive thing is the support vessels that travel with the Carrier in a group. @@LolUGotBusted Needs a lot more than 1. Just the CONUS coastline calls for 2, AK/HI 2 more, then NATO/EU/UN operational requests and tours for another, and then contingency planning because you can't just make a new carrier overnight, what happens should you lose one or need major repairs?

Do the story of mother Theresa. She was India’s Mother. She always and only wanted to help the poorest of the poor of India. She would take beggars and men dying on the street and bring them into her convent and give them dignity before they die. That was her mission in life to bring dignity to the dying street people of India.

I got the biggest kick out of the tribal member that talked about if the tire is punctured. They would be amazed at how much effort goes into avoiding this. Entire ship's crew walking the flight deck to remove any foreign objects that coult puncture the tire, to inspections after every time they land, to hour each hour is counted, the cost of the tire, and how little time they change it. I've been in remote situtaions and a tired that got killed is like a wounded person and that doesn't matter if it was a new tire. The tribal person I have the most respect for is the one that felt for all of this to be possible, this needs to be in place and he nailed it. Aircraft carriers have the best doctors, as well as search and rescue people on board and ready. An interesting thing to show them is the mishaps that can happen, to where they manage to remain alive. With such close quarters, people do get sucked into jet engines and while not a rope, when the cable breaks, it can cut a person in half. Those that avoid that death, there is a God element at play.
