Villiers mk12 Sump removal and check. Governor, What Governor??

So we take the sump off the villiera to check and look inside. Good job we did. we have a important missing part.

Hi Adam, enjoying the vids. I would imagine the lack of governor makes sense for the Atom application where you would need it to rev unlike a genny or compressor at constant rpm. I guess now its fitted doesn't matter unless connected.

Yeah we got the governors out of the original in there now as you see. Hopefully will be all good now. 👍

Yes, definitely would have been governed, otherwise you'd need the fastest thumb in the west to open and close the throttle in response to the constantly changing load. Remember, the Barford Atom is a ground engaging machine - It's a pedestrian operated two wheel tractor. Without a governor, it would be forever stalling under load. Remember too, the old engine that you took off had a governor, so that means the machine was governed. In that respect, whatever you put back onto the Atom, it needs to be governed. On possible reason for taking the governor out, would be if the engine was going to be used in a go-cart, or some sort of steampunk/rat bike. Yep, keep it red. The Atom was painted red. The engine was painted red on the Atom. Just paint it red!

Yeah I kinda knew she should have one. Like you say it would be pretty useless on a garden tractor with constant load demand. We all sorted now I hope. 👍

I would think that as the engine is used for traction (ie variable speed) a governor is not required nor desirable unless the governor is also variable via a trottle lever or pedal.

I believe that is supposed to have a governor because the other engine did which also came off a Barford so I'd say yes that needs a governor, it probably flew to peices which made the engine need a full rebuild. 👍

You're also missing the oil trough the conrod dipper runs in.

@@NorfolkMancave It would have been fixed with the 2 studs sticking out the bottom of the engine casting, first seen at 6:10 when you split the engine.

Yep they were all checked mate. We had 15 inlet and 25 outlet so I left well alone. 😉

Hi Adam I don't know a much about Villiers engines apart from they were fitted to Bond 3 wheelers. Were those engines similar to this one your working on ?

No the Villiers engine fitted tobthe old Bonds were more a bike engine that Villiers made.

Could 1 engine be fixed speed like say a generator would and the other variable do you think?
