Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 FE 4K Video Test (Shot on Sony A7SIII)

Viltrox has just created a marvel for photo and video

I bought the Viltrox 16 f1.8 as a successor to my Zeiss - Sony 18 f2.8. The Viltrox is sharper everywhere and less distortion at f1.8 compared to the Zeiss at 2.8. The AF-C for video is just as fast and silent as the Zeiss (but not as fast as the 24GM f1.4).

how are the colours compared to the Batis 18mm 2.8 ? i like the colours of my Batis 40 and 135. How is the viltrox? Thanks and have fun!

@@Schroeder3000 it’s about the same as the Batis in that I didn’t notice anything special compared to my 24GM or the 35 f1.8 Sony. Now the 55 zeiss f1.8 colors are very noticeable.

Thank you for a good selection of sample shots. That is missing from a lot of reviews. Like yes, this is a lens we knew this. What I wanted to know is what it looks like actually take a picture or video with it lol.

With the slomo and wide angle shot, these clips look amazing...now I'm tempted to get one. I noticed there's no distortion when you shoot the tall buildings, did you correct them in post or was it straight out of camera, thanks

What settings would you use for the sony a7iv and this lens? Also could you explain your colour grading process after taking the video? do i have to get an ND? if so when do you use it since I am a photo first shooter so its a proces to put it on or off. Lastly do i have to use a gimabl or can i handhold and if so whats the advice when doing so for justnormal travel footage to japan.

My copy of this lens arrived with faulty AF and I had to return it for refund. My first Viltrox. Not sure if I’m going to buy another. In 20+ years I’ve never had a bad Nikon, Leica, Sony, Tamron, Sigma, or Voigtlander fail straight out of the box. Not happy. 👎

What was your AF issue? I just received this lens and have been doing video tests. With AF-C on, mine focus hunts non-stop. It could be a stationary scene and it never stops hunting. Planning on exchanging it and hoping the next one works!

@@vibinya Exactly the same as mine. The AF is total trash.

@@vibinya Mine hunts even on AF-S it keeps cycling between infinity and closest focus when the target is 5-10m away... never seen a lens perform so badly out of the box. I'm beginning to suspect reviewers were sent hand-picked pristine copies that were tested before being dispatched.

The autofocus is pretty decent in lowlight. I wouldn’t say it’s the same autofocus level as the GM. But definitely not bad at all 😊

did u use a step up ring for ND Filter? Or can I put a 77mm Filter on it without a step up? Great Video mate!

No I didn’t, the filter thread is 77mm on this lens. So a normal 77mm filter works just fine. Don’t need a step up ring 😊

Nice! The only problem is that after watching you Nikon Z8 video, the video coming coming out of the A7SIII looks average, and well... like video. The Z8 video quality is like RED V-Raptor. I'm going to sell all my Sonys and go back to Nikon. Cheers!

I don't agree. I don't see that A7Siii any worse. I think the thing is in that Z8 video there is 70-200 lens was used, and here is the wide angle 16mm lens was used with almost no bokeh. I think if we will put the 70-200 on a A7Siii i'm almost sure that you will not spoil the difference. Almost all cameras in the same price range has almost identical image quality. Anyway, even if Z8 is noticeable better, Sony will release something better, then Canon will release something better, and this race will never stop. In my opinion it is much more logical to choose the system based on a lens selection. And Sony has way way more lenses in lineup. Some amazing lenses there! Anyway, it's a strange decision to sell all Sony gear and switch to Sony based on one review.

@@MagnetiqLabs Hi. I'm not selling based on one review, I've been thinking about switching the Nikon after the Z9 came out. I've been a Sony user for a few years, and even own FX6 and FX3. I mainly shoot video. However, I've never been happy with the color quality and the skin tones of the Sonys. The Sony cameras are true workhorses though and for me it's all about the image. If you shoot in n-RAW, the Nikon Z8 delivers superior color and motion cadence to any of the Sony cameras. I also own and Arri Amira camera, and have owned RED Komodo but sold it because I didn't like the color. The Nikon Z8/Z9 are the first inexpensive and lightweight cameras that can render a quality like a high end cinema camera. As good as the A7siii and FX6 are, they will never have the quality of of the Sony Venice camera, because why would people pay $75,000 for a camera if they could get the same image quality from an FX6. Nikon doesn't have any high end cinema cameras to protect and they can produce the best quality possible for the Z8. Nikon has always had superior image (photos) to everyone else, in my opinion.

@@willvazquez3218 what you say makes sense, mainly because you say you don't care about anything else than image quality. And it is impressive. I mean, if I was going the hybrid route, I would even prefer this to Canon (full HDMI!). Still in a real world scenario, image quality isn't everything and it becomes subjective very fast. And as an ecosystem and video production workflow, Nikon is too isolated. It feels they finally arrived into the fray though ;)
