I grew up with Vin Scully in LA. We knew what and who he was before most of America did. People showed up at Dodger stadium with radios and I never understood that. I was 10 years old and I just did not realize that they wanted to listen to Vin. As he moved into the national spotlight, my affection for him grew and I realized how lucky I had been.

Walking up the street on a Saturday, folks out washing their cars, and Scully's voice rarely isn't somewhere in the mix if the Dodgers were playing. Vinny would cover inning 1-3 and 7-9, with Jerry Dogget facing the unenviable task of doing 4-6. Jerry was fine. I'd have the radio on when I was going to sleep as a kid... fall out before the game ended... and wake up during the post-game, turn off the radio. Those were the days.

Vinnie was - like many other broadcasters in the day - firstly a fan of baseball. Nextly he was a Dodgers man, and those of us of different ages who grew up through decades listening to this ultimate 'fan' just think they both go together. Much like Chick Hearn and the Lakers. I grew up in Oragne County. This first year I listened to Vinny and Jerry Dogget was 1968, the year I became a 10 year old baseball and Dodger fan. The game I remember most that year was Bob Gibson pitching against the Dodgers in Dodger Stadium against Don Drysdale. This was shortly after Big D broke Wallter Johnsons consecutive scoreless innings streak. Suddenly a month or so later Gibson was on the verge of breaking Drysdale's new record and facing the Dodgers and Drysdale in Dodger Stadium. In the first inning the dodgers managed to get a runner to 3rd and Gibson threw a wild pitch and the run scored saving Drysdale's record. Gibson did not allow another run the rest of the game, on his way to a record 1.12 era in 1968. What a memeory listening to Vinny broadcast that moment on the radio.

My dad listened to Vin when the Dodgers were still in Brooklyn. When they moved to Los Angeles, he had a transistor radio listening to all the Dodger games. My guess is he followed them while he was serving in the Navy. When our home finally got cable, we were able to catch the L.A. TV stations, including the Dodgers games, and we've been following Vin ever since. Obviously, I never saw Bobby Thompson's shot heard 'round the world, nor did I see Mickey Mantle's homer. I did see Hank Aaron's HR on NBC TV, and of course, that memorable one Kirk Gibson hit off Dennis Eckersley. "High drive into right field; she is...... GONE!!!!"

For many years our radio guy in Minnesota was Herb Carneal and it was common practice to bring radios to the game when the Twins played outdoors at Met Stadium to hear Herb’s play-by-play. When the Twins moved to the Metrodome it seemed like the policy changed a bit and while nobody was asked to leave there was a definite sense that not everybody wanted to listen to the radio. I haven’t heard any radios at Target Field but then again I don’t think there are many fans listening to games on the radio anymore.

I was in attendance at Dodger Stadium on October 15, 1988. I witnessed Kirk Gibson hit his famous home run in person. I was 11. Reserve Level, RF, last section....halfway up, at the end, looking down into the A's Bullpen. I had a perfect view of the ball and it's final fate.....I know what happened to it. It ended up in the A's bullpen....got tossed in a bucket with the warm up balls....and taken in the visitors clubhouse. I had a perfect bird's eye view. This is why nobody has that baseball.

That wasn't Gibson's only great WS home run. He hit a monster shot in 1984 game 5 off Goose Gossage. Gossage got the sign from the bench to walk Gibson, but he shook it off and was determined to strike him out. The manager even went to the mound to convince him, but he wouldn't listen.

Thompson, Hank, and Gibson homers were easy to guess. Would not have guess the '63 homer. Thought is was going to be Rick Monday's homer in the 1981 NLCS that sent the Dodgers to the WS and eventual win against the hated Yankees.
@hazell-moranhomemovies67313 жыл бұрын
Interesting how 3 of these 4 homeruns he remembers were hit against the Dodgers. Also his story about Mel Allen in the '63 series reminds me that Joe Buck was in a similar situation during the 2011 World Series, he had a vocal cord ailment and never raised his voice the whole postseason. And Buck had to call the David Freese triple in the 9th and then his walk off homer in the 11th. Buck took a lot of crap for an underwhelming call of that game and I wish Buck had sat out so someone else could give these moments the enthusiasm they deserved, but yes he kept his voice at a low enough pitch that he didn't mess up his vocal cords any further the way Mel did in Scully's story. Being a born and raised Cardinal fan, I'm sure that could not have been easy for Joe to not go crazy no matter how much he gets made fun of for being nonchalant.
