Ok, fuck it, I'm just gonna go ahead and say it... Huge thanks to the Alliances for their picks. Really, I'm not trying to be an ass, but first we had one alliance who got Agalloch finally fucking done, then I remember whatever other Alliance got Queensryche done, from Operation Mindcrime, arguably (for me, it is) the best Metal Concept Album ever, and now these guys get some motherfucking Keeper of the Seven Keys Power Metal in here. I look at the video title and feel "Yeah, I wanna watch this" which is getting "rarer" these days... so thanks. Reading up, I see that I'm cursing a lot, but I'm gonna say that's just because this shit just makes me fucking happy, and apparently I curse a lot when I'm happy! I don't really understand some people who like Metal but hate Power Metal, I'm always like "How can someone who likes Metal listen to this and not have a fucking smile on their face?". In this case, it's not just a smile, the bass throughout this song was giving me a semi-erection, the vocals are great, the music is just extremely fun and played very fast... so they could be singing about My Little Fucking Pony for all I care, and I'd still enjoy this. And again, big respect to the Alliance, they could have picked a great 4-5 minute Helloween song, like "I Want Out", or any other great Power Metal song, but they picked a 13 minute one, from one of the best albums of whole time in the Genre... I'd say they wanted to "show off" the musicianship, and I love that. I'll take 13 minutes of good musicianship over 3-5 minutes of this millenium's "Oh, it's the year 20XX, we don't do solos anymore, that was 80's stuff" any day. Vin did mention a "Djent" Alliance, and I hate Djent, but hey, I'll cross that bridge when I get there, so far, so good (...so what), haha!

I don't mind the musicianship in power metal, I think most of the guitarists in the genre are outright virtuosos. However, I am not a fan of the constant operatic vocal delivery style in like 80% of power metal songs. The incessant upper register whining (yes!) really gets on my nerve after like 3 minutes. I'd much rather listen to harsh vocals.

I totally get where the people who hate on power metal are coming from, I used to love the genre but my tastes changed and it's way too 'campy' or 'cheesy' sounding for me to listen to more than a couple tracks every once in a while. I especially dislike the vocals usually, the constant high register head voice belting gets a bit tiresome the 1000th time you hear it. That said, Kiske-era Helloween and Blind Guardian are the exceptions, I could listen to that shit for days on end.

Helloween is a pretty classic and well respected band. They cast a large shadow of influence for the European brand of Power Metal. They took a lot of the melody that bands like Iron Maiden and Priest have and added the speed you were seeing out of the burgeoning Thrash scene. You still see new bands playing Powel Metal that’s directly influenced by Helloween’s style If you can embrace the inherent cheesy-ness that this style of metal can bring, there’s lots of excellent musicianship and singing to be found.

Try checking out more than one Helloween song. Nothing cheesy about them. Eagle Fly Free? March of Time? Try listening to more than one song before judging them. Either way, there's nothing cheesy about this song, nonetheless.

I was generalizing Power Metal more than Helloween in that comment. By saying it “can” be cheesy I’m not saying it’s always cheesy. I’m not even saying cheesy=bad I just know that some people only want to listen to “serious” music and you’re not always going to get that in Power Metal. You are right that my familiarity with Helloween isn’t very thorough. I’m really only familiar with two of their albums: The Dark Ride (which is awesome) and Keeper Of The Seven Keys: The Legacy (which is hit or miss). But c’mon, they have an album called Pink Bubbles Go Ape. They’re not cheesy? Really?

Oh Helloween have plenty of cheesy songs, and very deliberately so. They'be always been a *fun* band. There's a reason their style is often referred to as "Happy Metal". But that doesn't take anything away from the quality of their music. It's just how they are. Some people love it, other's hate it, and that's fine. It goes without saying that that does not include every single song they ever did. Plenty of very solid non-cheese in their discography. Including this one. I don't see anything cheesy about Halloween.

Sori, As someone that just absolutely adores Halloween as a holiday, let me just assure you that that documentary is is part of what's called the "Satanic Panic" of the 80's. There's nothing to it whatsoever other than religious groups trying to keep kids away from things that SEEM satanic but are not. There's a video like that for Heavy Metal music, Fantasy Roleplay Board Games and the like, all from around the same time. It's a scare tactic for control of culture. There's absolutely nothing to worry about. Halloween goes back centuries, and even has roots in Christianity. Even the word it self means "Holy Evening." It first started as Samhain in Scotland and Ireland. It's basically the welcoming of Fall and celebration of the end of Summer. Costumes started because it was believed that souls of the dead could come back and roam the earth for just one day and as such, you dressed as the dead ("Souling") in order to blend in with them as it was believed if you didn't they'd play nasty but harmless in nature pranks on you. Even Catholics and Protestant Christians did this, dressing in costume, begging the rich for soul cakes in return for prayer for the dead. Halloween is harmless and I can state that in my 31 years of life, NONE of that goes on in a large scale and never has. It's mostly small, small sects of radical Satanic pockets getting their jollies off, and kids looking for a thrill to scare other people to seem cool. It's like egging houses or TPing them. I suggest you do some reading on Halloween and it's origins. You'll be amazed at how actually tame and harmless it really is. I will say that that documentary did it's job, but it's sad that propaganda can scare someone so bad they don't celebrate a holiday (Not your fault at all. You didn't know any better when you saw it).

So much this! I was going to comment myself, but you've said everything that needs to be said. Those "documentaries" are pure propaganda. There really isn't any truth to any of them. They take the most unsubstantiated claims, with zero research and no supporting documentation at all, and use them to make a case that there is some sort of widespread murderous cult activity. Can I say that no one has EVER used Halloween as an excuse to commit horrifying acts? Of course not. But there are lunatics that do horrible things every day of the year. There's really nothing to worry about. Take your kids trick or treating this year. Go with them. Then you can make sure they are safe and they will have a great time and get candy - win win!

Malmsteen is Swedish. Personally i think Helloween were most influenced by the "Big Three" in the mid/late 80s that is Maiden,Metallica & Priest mixing that with other big German Bands like Accept,Scorpions and Running Wild.

Helloween is an absolute classic band. One of the originators of Power Metal. This is NOT the song I would have picked though. The main difference between power metal like this (more traditional power metal) and Iced Earth is that Iced Earth is a little more serious, heavier and thrashier. Its what kinda sets Iced Earth apart from the pack. You can really notice the heavy Iron Maiden influence with these guys and that would carry on to influence alot of the European power metal that would follow. This band spawned the equally awesome Gamma Ray which was fronted by the lead guitarist for Helloween, Kai Hansen. I think with Helloween its best to start (especially for people new to power metal like this) with "I Want Out". This isn't their longest song but its up there. And unlike the Gamma Ray classic "Heading for Tomorrow" I don't think it has the same epicness all the way through. Kai kills it on guitar as always. This one is a 8.5/10 for me. Great song but not their best. Pretty sure that guitar solo at 16:47 in your video is a snippet of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. I could be wrong but it sounds VERY similar. Its funny that you choose to do this song today after talking about Kirk Hammet and how he's like one of the greatest of all time. Kirk doesn't hold a candle to Kai's guitar playing. That video Sori linked is about the silliest thing ever. Its on youtube as a joke so people can make fun of how ridiculous it is, (check out the description for the video). Halloween is a harmless holiday for kids. What Sori is describing has to do with pagan rituals revolving around the solstice (if memory serves). Its I think this sort of nonsense (which I think is actually very dangerous) that led to black metal arising from the persecution of paganism in Norway and other Scandanavian countries. I'm not mad at Sori for any of this though. but I think its important to recognize how potential dangerous misinformation and misunderstanding can be when a united religious front is put behind it. We need to constantly be seeking knowledge rather than judging things. I think I just want to stress to Sori that Halloween the holiday has nothing to do with any rituals that may at one time (if they even occurred) have happened near that date. There is without a doubt people who use halloween as excuse to do evil shit. But those people would do evil shit anyways. I think its really important to stress how fun it is for kids to get a costume and go out and have some fun. And I think Sori you would realize probably within 30 minutes how cool this is for you and for them. Not my place to tell you what to do with your kids, all I can tell you is that some of my best memories from when I was a youngster was my dad taking me out trick or treating or going out with friends to do it when I was older. Iced Earth are usually classified as Powermetal. Very often a general distinction is made between US Powermetal and European Powermetal. That has to do with the originating bands, not necessarily with the actual nationality of the bands. Brainstorm, for instance, is a German band who play US Power Metal. The US variety was originated by bands like Metal Church, Helstar and Iced Earth, and it is closer to Thrash, with a stronger emphasis on riffs rather than harmonized melodies, and with a rougher vocal performance. But ultimately genres are just that. Powermetal, True Metal, Epic Metal, even SPeedmetal are all just slight variations of Heavy Metal to me. But to each their own.

GeekAdemics- Finally someone that knows their shit. A lot of people don't seem to know that power metal wasn't created in Europe. The USPM scene was just slightly older (and from my understanding, the term "power metal" itself originated in the US as a generic descriptor of bands more influenced by the NWOBHM than the garbage glam shit that was mainstream in America at the time). The Americans had the same influences as their European counterparts but went in a different direction: US power metal was often more aggressive and riff driven. The genre was also developing alongside thrash so it's not surprising that some flirted with that sound, but what distinguished USPM from thrash was it was still much more melodic and often featured operatic vocals.

Well..it would be fun with King Diamond/ Mercyful Fate..but it is not easy. Both of these bands are complex listening , if your not in to metal. I mean the 2 most "mainstream" songs i heard with those band's are time and the lake..i would really like to see an reaction to Welcome home...but it is a hard one, Mikey Dee on tecnichal drumming, strange rytmh changes , wicked solos , and the Kings voice...it is a challenge, and this challenge is to hard to some people..but did see reaction video on "Lost in Vegas" Mercyful Fate and Melissa..and respect for "Lost in Vegas" to do that one. In old interviews with the band after this album came out, they said that they wanted to sound like Iron Maiden. Yes, I'm that old, to remember. Their first album Walls Of Jericho was a speed metal album, and they wanted to be more Iron Maiden-ish, so they went out and hired Michael Kiske to sing (Kai Hansen sang on WoJ) for this album, and going forward. So yes, they were trying to emulate Iron Maiden.

I remember that song from when I was teenager - not exactly my genre, but at that time there was not as many bands to listen to and this one would be in the "close enough" territory and, still, they were good musicians. Anyways, obviously, the natural progressions is 1) listen to this classic 2) Halloween - protect your black cats, slit wrists are scary, human sacrifices are bad, drinking blood from chalice is only good when it's Jesus' blood, slippery slope; focus on 0.001% of bad, circle back to Bible, forget the band by that time. In other words: Vin and Sori - 17th century thinking in the age of technological wonder. A m a z i n g. I think Sori would be a great witch - telling people future from reading some obscure cards and asking them weird questions like "do you think your cat is chasing ghosts when you sleep?" Not a criticism of course - just an observation.

halloween started as the old celtic festival of samhain. the 'veil' between the worlds was supposed to be weakest at that time and sacrifices were made to the old gods. that much is certainly historical.

Awesome you guys finally did some Helloween. Kinda sad you didn't really touch on the vocals much. The singer, Michael Kiske, is maybe in the top 5 of the best metal vocalists ever. I think there's a lot of songs you can dig into of theirs with quite a bit of content for you to dissect. Watch out after their album Chameleon. They change vocalists from Kiske to Andi Deris, who's more raspy and more sort of jarring in terms of how different he is than Kiske. Also, for their album The Walls of Jericho, which was their first ever, their guitarist sings, Kai Hansen, who came before Kiske and started the band, is different than either Kiske or Deris.

Last time I heard this song was 25 years ago, I was 10 years old and I used to listen to Helloween songs all day, mainly 'Keeper of the Seven Keys' part 1 and part 2 on Cassette!!!!. I love me some Helloween. Good song choice by this alliance. Not sure who is in said alliance but they can all be my new friends. I do feel a thing on Halloween too though since you guys mentioned it. Totally not the thing you guys do though. It's more of a feeling of joy. Easily my favorite holiday. The one time of year where every candy bar has a dark chocolate variant, we can all enjoy horror movies together (even the kiddos get into the classics around Halloween), and sometimes you get a nice chilly breeze. Just the atmosphere around Halloween is great. Anyone spooked out by spookiness isn't spooky enough. So while we're on guys in costumes scaring old people. KISS have announced that they are doing a farewell tour. Any chance we can get some KISS reviews to remember one of the most iconic bands in rock history? Detroit Rock City would be a big one, yeah?
