The Wyatt Sicks are one of the more interesting WWE acts in a very long time. But did they ruin their mystique already by taking a picture with a fan? In this edition of The Wrestling Outlaws, Dr. Chris Featherstone chats with former WWE Head Writer Vince Russo and NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion EC3. So, Vince Russo, the guy who killed kayfabe (remember Buff “doing the job”) as Nitro was live, complains about the Sicks taking a photo away from the ring. There were plenty of photos of Undertaker, Sting, and Kane out of character back in the day, yet somehow once the show was on they were their characters and we believed. We all knew Peter Mayhew was in the Wookie suit, but when Star Wars is on, we see Chewbacca, not an actor. That’s suspension of disbelief, something Vince Russo knows nothing about.

Brock Lesnar and Goldberg were the same character basically. The only difference is Brock was bigger and even more psychically impressive than Goldberg. Neither could talk or had much of a personality. It’s not that it was just actually better, it’s nostalgia. Other than TV ratings (which are largely irrelevant in a streaming era) business is booming. Breaking records for gates, doing stadium shows and multi-night shows for big PLE’s. Wrestlers are earning more than ever. Match quality is up, storytelling is subjective, but the Bloodline arc has been one of the most successful, creatively and financially, of all time.

So that’s two (or maybe 1.5) network shows and the most successful streaming company. The monoculture is basically dead. People know some NBA players, and some NFL players. But the most successful TV shows barely ever crack 8 digit viewership. When Wrestling was getting 7 or 8 million viewers Friends was averaging 25 million. NBC was the most watched network in 2023 and averaged 4.5 million viewers. So what would you say is “Mainstream Success”?

First of all, wrestling isn't popular? Attendance to live events is way up. Merchandise sales are bigger than they have ever been. They just did 3 consecutive PPV/PLE overseas, and they sold them out. They're selling out football stadiums for secondary PPV/PLE. More people attended the 2 nights of wrestlemania 40 than the last 2 Superbowls. Ratings wise, wrestling has consistently higher ratings than Major League Baseball and the NBA. Going forward, the big 4 shows (Rumble, Mania, Summerslam and Survivor Series) are all going to be 2 night events held in big stadiums. The stock share value has gone way, way up. I know, I own stock. WWE made $1.7 billion in profits in 2023. Almost 30% higher than 2022. To put things in perspective. When Vince McMahon bought WWF from his father and the other shareholders in 1982, he bought it for $1 million. When Vince McMahon bought WCW in 2001, he paid $6 million. When Vince McMahon sold WWE to TKO in 2023, he sold it for $8.5 BILLION. Internationally, the WWE network is one of the top streaming apps, and here in America, the number of paid subscriptions to Peacock more than doubled when the WWE Network was moved to Peacock. Not to mention the fact that Netflix just handed Triple H a $5 billion check to move Raw to Netflix, and USA Network just handed Triple H a $1.5 billion check to move Smackdown to their network. 2 networks just combined to spend almost $7 billion dollars to get 4 hours of wrestling content per week on their networks. And wrestling isn't popular? You don't get into a bidding war with billions up for grabs to get a product to come to your network if that product isn't ridiculously popular. Using every metric used to determine the popularity of a product, WWE has not seen this level of popularity since the early 80s when wrestling went mainstream. Five of the top 10 highest rated shows on cable TV are wrestling(Raw, NXT, Impact, Dynamite and Collision), and the only sports programming on the Fox Network with higher ratings than Smackdown is the NFL. As for kayfabe, kayfabe died when wrestling got into Hollywood, and cell phones and the internet were invented. The main event for SummerSlam 1989, the 2nd biggest wrestling show of the year, was a rematch between Hulk Hogan and the character he fought in the movie he had just made. And it's wild that Vince Russo would complain about kayfabe not being respected when Vince Russo literally became rich and famous by booking some of the most kayfabe killing train wrecks ever.
