Love the last story in particular for the background story inside the derelict church. Those drawings are very effective IMO, and look like the art in the Hammer House of Horror magazine of the 1970s. The first episode is actually pretty creepy in as much as the Shadmock himself is just comes across as a weird guy who's too naive and trusting, yet I can easily picture callous people considering him a 'monster' for just being a socially awkward loner. Then he enacts his revenge.

I dunno. Looking at the character, he looks like he doesn't see sunlight much but I know a guy REAL time, that even MORE corpse looking like that, with long talons, bright red hair and is so pale, he makes Irish girls look like they have a tan who is actually a REAL creep that gave girls I hung out with MORE than just a major ick, they were actually scared of him, and used to ask me to give them excuses not to date him that wouldnt make him want to kill them, THAT'S how freaked out by him they were.

Since you take requests, I have a selfish movie review request. I love the 1978's The Medusa Touch with Richard Burton. When I watch that movie I feel melancholy powerlessness against death and disaster. I've always thought it was a movie about the philosophy of evil that befalls mankind. I know it is not perfect, but still so unique in its themes. Is it just me? Have you seen it?

I wonder what you think of the Amicus film And Now The Screaming Starts? I'd love to see you cover that one sometime. It's less well known than their anthology films, and unusual for Amicus in that it's a period gothic movie, territory they normally left to Hammer. It isn't a popular film, but I think it's better than its reputation.

I totally agree. The first time I saw this movie was as a tv broadcast (Elivra's Movie Macabre, if I recall correctly). So between the oddball tone of the first two stories & the connecting segments at the club, I was not prepared for the shift into something more serious. The flashback with the old drawings, complemented by the weird underscore for that scene, was genuinely unsettling, & I'm a big fan of this movie as a result.

Price might have played a vampire (or a person mistaken for a vampire) on an episode of "F Troop" back in the Sixties. I think the music here was an attempt to turn this into "Rocky Horror Picture Show" and capture that audience.

I always thought the Shadmock whistle is an overwhelming urge he gets due to his strong emotional response to something happening to him. And I also thought his whistle turns the victim inside-out! I also considered Monster Club to be a comedy. Not a good comedy, but a comedy nonetheless.

Love the soul of the first and third segment. The second I always found confusing. The entire format of the film is so whimsical in the most wholesome way. It’s like the movie was pitched and conceptualized by a Hammer production crew at some pub.

R.Chetwynd-Hayes wrote the novel which the film is based on. The book is superb and a lot more gory than this family friendly film. I do love the film it’s a lot of fun. My favourite segment is the Humgoo which features that wonderful ghoul village which can be found by entering a strange mist. There’s some wonderful artwork of ghouls by the excellent artist John Bolton. R.Chetwynd-Hayes is such an underrated horror writer and I love the touches of humour he injects into his works. Love this film. Saw it so many times when I was a kid. I like the shadmock more than you, I thought he felt creepy more than looked scary and that worked. But totally agree the ghouls was the best story. Scared me every time. If you've not seen black carrion from the hammer house of mystery and suspense series, there is nothing supernatural in it, but it has a similar feel. Also love the Stripper. My first reaction to this one was pretty negative, hated the songs and didn't much like the stories. But it was sure worth watching to see Vincent Price having the time of his life, and with John Carradine too! Wow! This made me come back to the movie and I found that I really liked the songs, I've even been known to hum the Monsters Rule number, and I liked the stories too. I liked that the last story tried to be genuinely creepy, but the silliness of much of the rest of the movie made it a bit hard for me to accept this. Nevertheless, it's odd but lots of fun. And monsters do rule!!!!

Overall I really like this movie. Yes, the Shadmock's makeup is kind of non-existent. As a goth chick, I actually think he's super cute, lol. This segment is tragic and sad, but would be a total wash without the great performances, especially James Laurenson as the Shadmock (RIP 04-18-24). I love the weird humor in the vampire story and the tale of the Humegoo is really scary. The music is fun and catchy and the wrap story is entertaining, with Vincent Price even dancing at the end. Yeah, the "monsters" look cheap, but the whole club/disco atmosphere is delightfully campy. One of my favorites for Halloween time! Have you seen The Abominable Dr. Phibes, Dr. Phibes Rises Again, or Theater of Blood? They all star Vincent Price, and I think you'd enjoy them
@operationgoldfish83312 ай бұрын
This movie was really made on the cheap. There's a point in the Vampires section, where the director says that it's been set in the modern day and Vincent Price tells John Carradine that it's to save money, which is clearly the case. It's the same with the graphics section in the Ghouls, but it is a good tale and fairly well done. They also used a lot of fairly well known Actors, although I don't know how big their paychecks would be for such limited screen-time, padded out with C-grade bands. The result is wonderfully cheesy, and both Price and Carradine sell it. I'd like to see the ghouls remade as a movie on its own. The story has that kind of potential. The others, not so much. The odd thing is I think I've only ever seen this movie once; in the cinema when it came out, but I remember the whole thing, so I've never wanted to watch it again.
