I firmly believe that the sequel will center around him and follow _his_ story. And I think it'll be about the haunted mansion. There's just no way a character with such a major role in the main series is given a minor role in the _first_ movie if he's not gonna be the MC of the second. Plus Luigi only being the MC in movie *#2* would also be hilariously fitting. I will not let myself believe that Illumination isn't going to reap the possibilities.

To a movie executive, every complaint is an absolute win. It means that not only do fans want another movie; they want one with Luigi in the main spotlight. Luckily for them, and the fandom, that's in the cards. In February 2022, Charlie Day talked about his interest in adapting Luigi's Mansion after watching his son play it. Fast forward to March 2023. Not only is Day completely in favour of a Luigi movie but in one interview with Chris Pratt and himself, Pratt brought up a "hypothetical" Nintendo Cinematic Universe, specifically mentioning Luigi's Mansion. The Nintendo-Universal deal stems back to 2015, while plans for Super Nintendo World were being announced. Nintendo agreed to have a series of movie adaptations based on the Mario franchise, and everyone who was cast has definitely signed a contract stipulating that they will work on a series of sequels and spin-offs. Day knows that a Luigi movie is part of the deal. He's saying that he "wants" one because that's the closest he can get to talking about it without violating his contract. For Luigi fans, it's a win-win. This follow-up is either the Luigi movie, or Luigi will get equal screentime to Mario in the sequel.
