TWiN reviews experiments which show that SARS-CoV-2 triggers the up-regulation of synaptic components and perturbs local electrical field potential in cerebral organoids, organotypic culture of human brain explants and post-mortem brain samples from individuals with COVID-19.

Thank you very muchf for another fantastic talk on real science. Especially I love all 4 are here this time!

Great twiv! I do wish that you would show the images, figures and graphs (not blocked by paywallls,etc.). I'm left lacking when only a description is presented. Think of Allen's pick as evidence for my case. And please leave the images up a second longer; we don't all comprehend at lightening speed. Thank you for all you do. Signed, Life-long learner.

I think this is a good example of there are effects unrelated to the pathological replication phase of viruses, changing synapse chemistry. Reminded me of previous lecture that the organism 'domesticates' viral genes in the historical context, like how did it figure out what to do with the extra gene repertoire (eg placenta)

Interesting re the brain tissue samples taken so long after death. I had to do some additional research "Contrary to previous notions that brain cells die within 5 to 10 minutes, evidence now suggests that if left alone, the cells of the brain die slowly over a period of many hours, even days after the heart stops and a person dies. Paradoxically, it is the reintroduction of oxygen to deprived cells after the heart is restarted that causes the cells to suddenly die much more rapidly. The longer someone has been left without a heartbeat, the greater this cell injury process-as a result, someone with less than 5 minutes without blood flow to the brain has a much higher likelihood of recovery compared to someone who experiences 30 minutes without blood flow. Minimizing the amount of time that cells are deprived of oxygen is critical to halting the process of cell damage and death."

Is this another situation of damage caused by oxygen “free radicals”?

Yes, among other tidbits, I’m sure. It’s particularly obvious in stroke, where reperfusion (i.e., blood re-entering the oxygen-deprived area) is disastrous to the tissue.

Hi, thanks for this detailed analysis. It would be great if you could put some written info on the panelists names, qualifications/affiliations, as well as a link to the paper you're discussing. Timestamps would also be super helpful :)

Can they distinguish the effects of COVID from that of other sources of spike protein that the subjects might have encountered?

Oh dear. You'll have to try harder with your antivaxer dogwhistling I'm afraid. Better yet, actually watch the video and learn something.

@@skepticalbadger Weak response to a genuine quesion. It's not the anti-vaxxers fault that they were proven correct on so many levels, it is in fact the "pro-vaxxers" that should be worried about their constant spewing and regurgitating of false information. Virology is nonsense, those that blindly follow the alchemy of virology are the bisggest anti-science group out there. Worst of all, most of you aren't capable of grasping what virus are or how they are identified , you have no knowledge of sequencing, nor of how a viral partivcle could be isolated yet you feel the need to shut down genuine questions with the ever so lame answer " you're wrong because I say so" ... Eventually you will have to face the fact that the unvaccinated never got Covid and didn't die off as was predicted by endless "models". Until you can understand why unvaccinated people are not dying of Covid you will never understand anything about modern epidimiology and it's ties to MONEY.

Both sides need to keep an open mind. Plenty of misinformation on both sides.

Well at least being distracted by beating a long-dead horse diverts one's attention from its leftover supply of medical paste that can go to a living horse that actually needs it.

@@highlandbob2470Science is not a 'side'. It is a process to describe or explain natural phenomena that has one key characteristic that sets it apart: blind handling of data, meaning the data speak independently of anyone's feelings. When your argument does not contain data, it is not science. Simple as that.
