I absolutely love this. I'm putting these kind of walls on my Adeptus Titanicus titan bases. I took a old phone charger and cut up some of the red wire inside and put the wire in the cork and frayed the copper at the end to add electrical wires to the ruined walls.

I think making sure you are doing all of your bases (with this theme) together will help things stay consistent with your level of decay and build up. Otherwise, some will turn out obviously more mossy or more dry (dirty, fresh, etc.) than others, and lose their cohesion. I've also had success using small shards of blister packs as broken glass bits, randomly strewn in areas.

2:05 I have found that Strong Tone is interchangeable with Agrax Earthshade. At least when it comes to tone. Consistency and finish could be a little different. In other words if you run out of one of the two, than you can use the other before you need to buy new stuff.
@VinceVenturella3 жыл бұрын
Yep, strong tone is a little lighter, but they are very close, both black/browns.

Fantastic tutorial. Very informative. If I could offer a thought, (and by no means a criticism, because I'm no expert). I'm not sure the bricks belong on the base. I say this because the ruined walls and floor look like concrete that was maybe poured, (hence the rebar), so I'm unclear as to where the red bricks would have come from. They just seem to be out of place to me. But thank you for creating the Hobby Cheating series of tutorials. They inspire me to be better.

I usually use Mig enamel stuff but as amazing that thing is, because you have different levels of gloss from matt for rust to glossy for slime, drying times are a little bit long. Citadel washes are perfect for overall work and Mig for final effects. As I said I need to try it out soon. Thanks for tutorials
@ArnoVdVelde7 жыл бұрын
Great tutorial as always and a great conclusion to the base. Thinking about rebar, you can use tiny detail to mix up the 'story' of the base. That might be overthinking it cause that is too small a detail to really be noticed.

Hello Vince, great video, thanks! I am now working on my urban Ruin bases, and I am wondering what is your approach on larger projects than single models - e.g entire army painting - do you finish a base, than glue the mini on, and than start with the painting process (undercoats, painting etc), or you glue the bases to the model once both are finished? This is for my army project, not a display piece, and I will be working on my army in parts - e.g. 750points batches of WH30k. Cheers - Jan
@VinceVenturella2 жыл бұрын
I do the models and bases separate to complete, then glue, then clean up (generaly).
@Wijkert4 жыл бұрын
Very nice tutorial Vince! At the end you mentioned painting tufts. Do you have any video's where you show how to do that?
@VinceVenturella4 жыл бұрын
In most of the basing videos where I am applying tufts, you'll se me do it, I will do a whole video on it in the future. In the simplest form, the key is you take some Agrax earthshade or something similar and force it into the heart of the tuft and around the base of the tuft. Then once that dries, a light dry brush across the top.
@RedeyeX237 жыл бұрын
a fantastic tutorial and very interesting, this is great thank you .would you fix your pigments or just spray over varnish ?
@VinceVenturella7 жыл бұрын
I generally just give them a quick spray over varnish and that fixes them pretty well.

Really appreciate the thoroughness of your videos. I’ve learned so much! Question about basing in general... at what point would you attach your mini? After the pigments? And then blend it in a bit? I’m using methods of this video for an entire army and looking to make it as efficient as possible. Thanks again!
@VinceVenturella4 жыл бұрын
Yep, after the pigments and then I work a little up onto the feet of the mini and we're done. I don't generally reseal those last little pigment touches as they are for the deepest areas and tend to stick just fine.

I've been doing this technique on my Blood Angels and I love it. If I wanted to do an armies on parade type of board with these ruins, how do you think I could scale it up to make larger ruins for an armies on parade board? Thanks!
@VinceVenturella4 жыл бұрын
Well, there are two options. On the full board, there are certainly just ruined terrain kits you can buy (like the sector terrain of ruined cities). You could alwas get some of that and you could mix it into the custom made terrain. You can also scale this up with larger pieces of plastcard, and then just add small bits all over it (fans, grates, pipes, et al), to fully customize them.
@SvenEnterlein3 жыл бұрын
Is there any way to mix your own washes for this? I have a number of FW inks for example along with all kinds of medium and flow improver. Not sure why I am so hesitant to buy GW washes but maybe it's worth investing in a handful of them? If so, which ones would you recommend? Many thanks!
@VinceVenturella3 жыл бұрын
Sure, some ink with some flow improver and maybe a little glaze medium or water and you are good.
@MrStatistx4 жыл бұрын
I just made a base (also my first more complex one, especially since it's bigger for a Redempter Dreadnaught) from scratch and while I did not follow your build video, I took quite a lot of steps from the painting part. Only thing I'm wondering now is: Did you (or in general would you) now varnish that base, with all the pigments and stuff?
@VinceVenturella4 жыл бұрын
In general, I varnish in mid-steps, so there isn't much need to do a final varnish (and I never varnish metals).
@johntailby747 жыл бұрын
would a wall like that be concrete on both sides like that or would it be painted or textured so that it looks like it is part of an interesting building? The only bare concrete buildings where I live are car parks. they tend to be short on walls other than the stairwells.
@VinceVenturella7 жыл бұрын
Hard to say, if these were more settler based or outer rim buildings, more things erected solely for utility, they might be pure concrete, or the outer wall could have crumbled away. In the end, there is lots of ways you could take and vary it for sure and it would still work.

Hey thats just great - could I ask what Colors and techiques were used to gez to the First Step? Best regards

Sure, so that first step was just my standard zenithal highlighting, basically cover in black primer then white an a raised angle. You can find several tutorials about it in the Hobby Cheating playlist, such as this one - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gF7HgohjmbiBl5o

I love doing bases/terrain. It is a great palate cleanser, because you can do whatever you want. Low stress compared to something like a competition piece. Also a great time of using paints you normally don't use. Especially neutral/muted colors because nature is random, so sticking to a color scheme makes less sense.

Sure, I could add that to the list, but the real secret is flow improver and a paint with good coverage combined (something like the Vallejo Extra Opaque). That let's you trace very thin lines cleanly.
