Also take a walk around the buildings in your life for inspiration. Electric meters, storm drains, conduits etc. are easy little greebles to add to wall exteriors that really sell the scene. Great video as always Vince!

I must say that four years ago when I first watched this tutorial, bases were mostly an afterthought. My minis took so long to paint that it felt like I was starting all over when it came time to base them. I decided I wanted to spend more time playing and less time crafting/ painting bases. Then there was a pandemic and the time issue seemingly evaporated. I re-watched your tutorial and have added your basing tips to my bag of hobby tips. Thanks Vince.

Hi great tutorial as usual. Just one little trick. Look after foam board it's really cheap and will replace the plastic card and corks for the same effect. You can texture it easily with a roller pen or with specific sculpt roller. The one I use came from green stuff world. Tks a lot and keep up the good work.

Yep, the goal is to make something cheaper, easier and something you could quickly do lots of for an army or small force without losing your mind (as plaster often makes me want to do ;) ) - thanks for watching and commenting.

Okay had to give it a shot last night for one of my 50mm Dark Age Dragyri (you NEED to try Dark Age btw!), doing a nice skirmish force this way is absolutely doable in an evening! trying to get a hold of some "TERRAINS CONCRETE" from AK interactive and test it out, the texture should be perfect for this

Great stuff vince! If I may make a suggestion about the rebar. It would be awesome to bend it a little and leave some concrete on a few of them. Usually, they don't break out clean like that. Can't wait to see you paint it up.

You could add texture to the plastic card before glue it to the cork, so it is easier to sand it. Alternatively I have found that backing soda makes for a very fine texture, so that could be used as well. Sanding seems much faster though. Ps I found that Vallejo Texture Desert Sand has a little less fine of a texture compared to backing soda. As in Backing soda looks more like sand than Desert Sand does.

Thanks for the video, it's great. In it, you mention using the Vallejo paste to do a stucco effect on the wall: would you recommend using the White pumice (or any color pumice) for that, or a different one of the textures? Most of the stucco recommendations I've seen from hobby people have been to use spackling, but I'm not in love with anything I've seen from them. I've seen a few use Das for it, and that seems to work alright, but it is a bit messy to work with. Unfortunately I couldn't find any stucco videos from Mel (just a wattle and daub one, which is close).
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 2 жыл бұрын
Any of the textures will work, between clay, stucco and many other wall types, they all fit, it's just what you want.

Looks pretty good with a lick of paint on! I especially like the little story the row of three bullet holes tells. It's little details like that you might not notice, but which really sell the piece. Question though, if it's a concrete building, where did the bricks come from? :P
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 жыл бұрын
Hmmm...let's say there was a brick facade, or maybe some under the ground on an old layer of the city ;) - thanks, glad you liked it. For me, you have to work in the little touches to keep it interesting.

Although the plastic card looks great, it's entirely too much work per base for the end product. Just glue your cork pieces together, smear a little drywall spackle on the sides and let it dry. A lot easier than tracing and cutting card. The paperclip rebar, however, is perfect. I hadn't even thought of using rebar on my broken wall segments.

Great video! Could you use foam board for this instead of the cork/plasticard combo?
@VinceVenturella

Absolutely, there is like a compressed foamboard that is perfect for it. I've since used it for this purpose and it's wonderful.

Great video as usual Vince. What brand is the plasticard and is it available on amazon?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 жыл бұрын
No idea on the type, but yes, I got it from Amazon, it's a generic multi-pack. Something like this - www.amazon.com/Litko-Game-Accessories-NA-Plasticard/dp/B00MR5EIN6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1502887620&sr=8-1&keywords=plasticard+sheets

The problem is, with that smooth edge it still looks more like gravel sandwiched between two 15 mm sheets of steel. Have you tried using some acrylic wood filler instead of plasticard? It usually gives just the right texture to imitate concrete at this scale and can be easily sanded to give even smoother surface.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 жыл бұрын
That's why I like to finish it off with the plastic putty, I mentioned it, but didn't do it on this for lack of time, but it solves that problem. I have also played around with White Stone from vallejo and that tends to also have a nice stucco effect.

Excelent tutorial, Thank you! One thing though, I don't recall you bringing up plasti-card substitute like you stated in the beginning?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 жыл бұрын
I may have mentioned it too quickly or forgotten it, but the other alternatives are 1) You can use something like the vallejo white stone paste and smooth it out for a more stucco look. You can also use something like DAP wall putty and smooth and sand that to make it look more like a solid piece (so you don't have the cork/plasticard distinction you then have to cover up).

be a good idea to roughen up the plasticard with some coarse sandpaper before applying it to the cork
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I roughed it up after, but you are correct, it's a good idea to change the order, just so you can more easily access the cork. I like to mix sandpaper and deeper scratches, as I like it to be quite worn.

Oh, sorry, the next question. How thick is your cork board? And I think the cardboard is really thin, right?

Yes, I think the corkboard is 1/4 inch (I picked it from the craft store). The plasticard is super thin yes. I get it in big multi-packs from Amazon.

I'm going to assume that free people are getting min size bumped to 20 on most or all of the battleline choices. What does that mean? Running Bret knights as battleline just for a lot more appealing! Which means I should probably get around to painting all of those guys eventually. It also means the Halberdier horde is back! Giant mass of cheap troops at 2+/4+/-1 sounds like a thing to me. A horde discount on Greatswords would be pretty sweet too. I've had 30 of those bros sitting on my shelf gathering dust for a while now because they're so slow, but make them cheaper and they might be more appealing, especially if we get allegiance abilities that synergize well with it.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 жыл бұрын
I assume you meant to leave this on the other video and it rolled forward - cursed auto-play. That being said, I agree, I think that this will also make brets even better as they will now have a free people's allegiance which could be very awesome.
