1:23:58 I wanted to add that "done" doesn't have to mean "finished". I try to build-in natural stopping points in my painting plan. Get everything basecoated, highlighted, based, and from there you can keep working on the army while taking it to tournaments. Like, when I was playing OBR I had this annoyingly tedious scheme for the bone color and texture, but I had it broken in stages so the models just slowly got more detailed with every GT I took them to. The only tricky part is making sure you stop at the same painting step for the whole army. So long as it looks cohesive on the table, it'll be fine. It took months to finish the army and Katakros almost took a whole year, but that's a way I came up with so that I could both get the army "done" so I could play with my toys without sacrificing the quality I wanted when it was finally "finished". hope that helps someone.

A medium you didn't mention - gouache. NOT the acrylic gouache you reviewed previously, but the older, simpler gouache. You paint it on, it's fairly matte... and after it dries you can reactivate it with water. And pull it down. Similar effect to oils. Marco at NJM displayed them on his SCE dude on bird-horse-thing recently, was a great medium to use.

I know you've obviously heard plenty about it but I don't think you can do better than the new Vallejo range. Good working time, good matte finish that isn't as coarse as S75, etc.. It's very similar to the Ak 3rd gen range. Hearing your comments I'm really curious about the Fanatic line though. In Japan we don't get many options, but TAP tends to be available, alongside Vallejo and Mig.

Hell yes to paint and gibber Best advise I got from you that helped most, don't let perfect be the enemy of the good. Been finishing way more models, and quality seems to be increasing. It's still decent tabletop to my view but that's my goal. Just painting regularly does so much for speed and brush control, and getting stuff finished makes me paint more. On the battle tomes I think all issues are exacerbated by the 3 year cycle, and quarterly tweaking*. They have made them a disposable product and want premium prices, it doesn't add up. *that cadence works for tournament play, not casual play. It should not be necessary but reality is their process doesn't make good books ... probably because I can't imagine the development timeline is sufficient for any designer to catch all the issues

Can I make a request Vince: when you do the Skaven review, can you go over existing index units in full detail rather than just skip over them as being the same as the index?

My tips to our newer guys when they want to come along with the club to a tournament but are worried about getting painting done in time is to first off, put a squad on the painting table and do a colour a night while your doing other stuff. Its barely any prep, cause its just one colour and you don't have to do any thinking or choices. You find out super quickly that you do have 5-15 mins around the place while doing other things to get that colour done. Cooking dinner, paint while cooking. Wondering what to do that evening, paint while pondering. Watching Warhammer Weekly, paint while watching. Units get done SO fast. After that I'm a big fan of lying to yourself. That Gargant is the same as that Clanrat, 1 model. Makes finishing up that squad of chaff a big morale boost as you didn't paint 10 nerds who will die turn 1, you painted like 20% of what you needed to get done! Finally I do what I call Operation Harassment, where in the club group chat I spam the fuck out of it demanding to know what everyone has gotten done and showing off what I've done. Chat firing off gets peoples attention and painting as a group helps motivate to get it done. I start off way out at once a week and get more frequent up to every night in the fortnight before.

Maybe the later books will have more new content, but it was pretty clear (to me) that the first couple books wouldn't change much when stormcast and skaven had some pretty significant rules changes between the 3e rules and the index. I don't think they would have prioritized updating the skaven and stormcast rules if they were only going to last 2 months.
@MrSJPowell2 ай бұрын
Speaking of painting for your games, much of what I'm painting right now is for Space Station Zero. I'm currently working on 4 different squads for it, mostly because I've had 3 different projects for Space Marines noodling around in the brain for years, and only painting 5-10 of them is a lot easier than painting 30-50 of them for an army. (The 4th squad is one I'm priming and base coating with an airbrush for a buddy who's painted a total of 2-3 minis ever. Plan to teach and help him with them Saturday night.) Eventually I'll get back to the Skaventide Stormcast I paused because I finally opened the floodgates with these Marines I'd had on pause since March.

Thank you for mentioning the battletome situation! It’s insane to me that these undercooked index rules might be everything that’s intended to carry us through 4’th edition! There is not a chance in any hell that I’d even consider buying a book unless they expand the rules and I’ll struggle to maintain the mildest interest throughout the edition if the weak index rules are everything we get. It’s wild to me that GW might not understand this. I’m surprised more people aren’t talking about it.
@greglewinski20882 ай бұрын
Seems to make sense that you could even just buy the index cards (if you don't have a printer) and just make the small updates to those when the army book comes out. I mean I play NH, FEC and S2D and there are several units that really didn't even change from 3rd. Not going to spend $35 to $40 on new cards when they will admit the old ones won't change much

I also have a Conquest army and been looking into drop zone/drop fleet. One piece of advice i think was big do not bother putting all the little knickknacks on the model. I use to just follow the instructions, but lately i look at the pieces can i very easily paint this piece (like a single coat of a contrast) if yes sure may put it on if not leave on sprue. I wish i could get an airbrush but my area just couldn't work it as i would need to setup an exhaust fan. I'm unable to do that right now.

Make it easy to paint. Have your brushes cleaned, a clean pot of water, wet palette set up, painting area cleaned up. Do this at the end of each session and you can just sit down when you next have time and get moving. Clear all the projects except the one you are working on (or two) and remove clutter so you feel like you're in control. Then stop thinking about painting and start painting!!

About the battletomes. First of all, they clearly stated that the points will be up on warhammer community. It is too bad that we don't know what they mean by core rules, excluding the part later in the same paragraph where they inform us that in later tomes battle traits and units might change. It might just be hopium but it sure sounds like more spell lore, battle formation options might be on the table.

It might be false economy but I sometimes avoid using my airbrush because it takes me 20min to set up and I need a shave before putting on my PPE. Therefore, I mainly use if only for big batch jobs, such as zenithals, varnishing etc. I want to use it for other more detailed work but it's sometimes easier and quicker to use the brush because of the setup. Unfortunately nowhere to leave it all setup with booth etc.

Ah drybrush guys. If you are getting new models with alot of texture e.g nearly all the skaven stuff base coat and drybrush. Outside of an airbrush, layering can not only take ages but on fine areas (some might even call a highlight) take alot of skill. Drybrush will pick those areas up and theyll pop. Definitely not a bad tech, know when to use it.

I'd qualify my best painted models (Varanguard and Chaos Lord on Karkadrak) results as a good amateur paint job (looks nice and a bit of OSL effects that turned out well) but I'm still miles behind several pro painters that I see online. I have a new airbrush that was given to me as a gift about 7-8 years ago and I'd really want to use it (I see lots of videos with very nice effects and transitions from airbrushes) but I don't think that I can use it because I live inside an apartment without a window I can open. I read that you need to use a mask AND setup some sort of station with a machine to vacuum the paint from the air, is that true or are people exaggerating?
@VinceVenturella2 ай бұрын
You can certainly still use it. A good booth is nice as it can draw things into the HEPA filter, but you don't need to worry about the open room too much if you have a basic mask and are using a cheap paint booth with filtering and you're sticking to acryllic paint.
