It's because back then they provided something unique as their output was barely comprehensible. They were very good at making surreal, dream like imagery or even horror at times. The machine inability to work the thing was more or less the same appeal you'd get from seeing your kid draw and every so often they'd make something that would look actually nice. Granted the same concerns of how they have been made always existed but like if you see the Vinny ai streams over the years the real entertainment the audience usually got is that "this is pretty bad but it'a trying so hard it's, amusing"

I remember there was a Joel art section where someone submitted an AI generated Scythelord album cover on the booru (I think made with DALLE 2 or some other software?) with Joel responding to it talking about how AI was starting to worry him in terms of how scary and exploitable it is. Now he didn't talk about how it would affect artists, since I believe it was before that became a huge point of concern online, but he did talk about how he usually tries to keep up with how technology works and saw AI as magic he couldn't pin his head around. With how AI is seen nowadays, his fears were pretty justified. Now pretty much everyone is starting to see Generative AI content in a very negative light, and understandably so.
