I had that _Phantom Menace_ game for the PC back in the day. It was great fun running through the crowded streets of Mos Espa and throwing thermal detonators everywhere. The fact is that the first mass console in the post-Soviet countries was Dandy - a Taiwanese clone of NES, the games for which were mainly Chinese bootleg collections of the type "99999 games in 1". Of course, such cartridges were cheap (although the console itself was expensive by the standards of the clone) and we in fact didn’t realy know that these were all cheap Chinese bootlegs with obscure collections of games in 1 cartridge and strange hacks, we just played games and had fun. Towards the end of the nineties, licensed products began to arrive to us, for example, many had the original Sega Genesis (more precisely, Mega Drive 2), or very high-quality clones and licensed games also increasingly came across, but with the arrival of PSone in our stores, the market was flooded with various pirated versions of games with poor machine translation and disgusting voice acting. And they were everywhere, because many, since the days of that very Dandy, were accustomed to the fact that games should be cheap and people simply did not want to pay the conditional 20 bucks for a game, we had such a culture that when purchasing the console itself, you had already paid more than it is necessary and games should be cheap, and in the best case, completely free. That is why almost every PS1 in our country was chipped to read pirated discs (some stores even sold already modified consoles or offered modification services) and that is why our market for pirated games was so extensive. As a result, entire firms of pirate publishers appeared, which had their own recognizable disc designs and their own approach to translations and dubbing. Some of them were very high quality and eventually grew into full-fledged licensed publishers and localizers (for example, Fargus and Snowball Studios), and some were so terrible that they ruined the childhood of many with their broken versions of games with terrible translations and in some way became meme. For example, such studios as 7Wolf, Kudos and Russian Project. Such meme-like bad localizations of games are known here as “Spended translations”, due to the famously bad translation of the early version of GTA San Andreas, where the word Wasted after the death of the character was translated into Russian verbatim (in Russian it sounds like “Potracheno” and usually means rather "to spend" than what was in the original). Also in this translation there were such legendary mem phrases as “cool your fucking” and the curse word “Cabrone”, which in this version was translated as “carbon fiber”. And this culture of hacks and piracy existed in our country for quite a long time, for example, hacking PSP and installing game roms on a memory card was a very popular practice (not only because we didn’t want to pay for games, by the way, they weren’t expensive, it’s just that the PSP drive was unreliable , and the UMD disks itself was not very good format, so it was simply more convenient to just download game images). And even now, when many in our country are already accustomed to buying licensed games, piracy is still quite popular. And I won’t say that this is bad thing. Firstly, some games simply do not have an official translation into Russian and then third-party localizers come in very handy, besides, over the years the quality of their translations has increased greatly and sometimes they even do professional voice acting using funds from donations . Secondly, unlicensed repacks of games are a good way to try a game before purchasing, because not all every have a Demo version. Thirdly, it helps to preserve unavailable games, some games have disappeared from all online stores for copyright reasons, or, for example, are no longer available in our region (very relevant now).
