Fun Fact: Rascal was originally going to have full analog movement but the publisher Psygnosis thought that tank controls literally were the popular trend at the time. Needless to say: Travelers Tales was angry.

While some aren’t so great (Sonic 3D Blast, Toy Story, etc.) they have been involved with some of most timeless games ever developed... stuff like Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath Of Cortex, the Lego Star Wars series, some Monkey Ball titles, etc.

The ad was a bunch of soccer players trying to retrieve said ball. They decided to make a game based on it

Tank controls were never 'popular', they were just a necessary consequence of pre-rendered backgrounds and fixed camera angles. The idea that someone looked at Resident Evil and other popular games at the time and went "You know what people like about these? The TANK CONTROLS!" is hysterical to me.

It's a fantastic game on the C64, one of the first times game developers got the fighting game genre right. I imagine 98% of us here in the UK who love the original even know the PS1 version exists.

John Burton, the former head of Traveller's Tales & behind the KZbin channel GameHut revealed that Rascal was originally designed like more conventional platform games like Crash or Spyro, but the game's publisher saw dollar signs when the original Tomb Raider became popular & forced the developers to adopt that game's controls, despite the Rascal's level being not designed around tank controls & having no time to redesign the game so it would!

Other cool thing about Croc, it had tank controls yes, but if you had a dualshock controller, you could enable the analog controls and get 360⁰ movement and camera control. (Assuming you played it on PS1, not sure if the game is available on N64.)

@@2minuss I recommend looking up Jon Burton's video on it as he worked on the game himself back in the day. Long story short it pushes the Ps1 hardware to it's limits with many aspects whilst maintaining mostly 60 fps. A framerate you basically never see on the Ps1 hardware to begin with.
