@David-wo7nt Жыл бұрын
I mean, as a aspiring solo dev myself - how DO you even finish something like this? It feels more like a concept than a game, you could add infinite amount of stuff to this and still consider it not finished. I bet my ass that this also suffers badly from cascading ideas - you have a checklist of stuff to add, but as you add stuff it generates new ideas and the list just grows larger as you work your way trough it.

@ArtFluids Жыл бұрын
I've been following this game since 2017. I used to talk to the dev, really wanting to see it finished. I offered to finish it for them and they almost let me (I think). But yeah, I'm glad we at least get this much of it. I would like to see more weird 90's throwback point and clicks that are an earnest attempt at capturing that feel, without just relying on irony. I liked Hypnospace Outlaw, but this feels a lot more genuine and less jokey. It truly feels like it came from the time period. I would like to see more sincere work with this feel. I think the genre/medium of point and click (Macromedia Director, Macromedia Directorcore) is seriously under explored. I would like to see more stuff that picks up where iNSCAPE left off. Stuff like The Dark Eye and Bad Day On The Midway. Those multimedia experiences-I hesitate to call them games-were extremely immersive and transporting. Truly unique. Immersive interaction without the need for conventional narrative. I think the medium of point-and-click with pre-rendered CG graphics has genuine strengths that are its own, and it's not fair to just look at something like Myst or Riven and say "it would have been realtime 3D the whole time if it could have been." There's a new realtime 3D remake of Riven on its way, and that's cool, but... the original was incredibly immersive as-is. I think that says something. Changing the medium changes the message. I wrote a little "manifesto" some years ago after seeing Frog Days called "The Directorcore Manifesto" and it's on itchio if you look for it. It was a sort of "call to arms" to invite people to explore making games in this format. It's been a while and I probably don't still agree with everything in that document but I still feel strongly about the general principle. Maybe now is the time... If anybody is curious, IIRC the tools the dev was using for this game were Blender for the graphics and Adventure Game Studio for the engine. I really wish there was something like Macromedia Director now that would make building something like this easier.

Making a point-and-click isn't too hard, but man, I wish there were more resources for making 3D graphics like this in Blender. I just can't figure out how to make anything look like this, other than just making it low poly. This game absolutely *nails* the aesthetic of the period it's trying to emulate.
@ArtFluids Жыл бұрын
@@Zorochase for this sort of thing I don't think "low poly" is the necessarily the answer. You wouldn't approach it like you're approaching making assets for a typical game. A lot of objects in older renders have their geometry smoothed during rendering in a way you don't see with realtime 3D graphics, for example. I think it's more about using more primitive lighting and shading. No global illumination (although, I see it in Frog Days). Use point lights and spot lights. Phong and Blinn shaders. No PBR. Low res textures. Also, final renders should be 8-bit (i.e. 256 colors), 480p or 240p. You can easily use a tool like Imagemagick to do that last part. I wish I had some examples to show you but I don't. Maybe I can try to make a scene like this as a weekend project.
@Zorochase Жыл бұрын
@@ArtFluidsI appreciate the correction and clarification. I think I need more practice with setting up scenes in Blender anyway, as I usually only use it to model/texture and use a game engine (Godot) to do the rendering. I've always wanted to make something like this game, but for now I'll stick to making PlayStation graphics lol

This is the aesthetic that really does it for me. Late 90s/Early 2000s multimedia/shareware CD-ROMs with tons of weird surreal shiny pre-rendered CGI and genreless MIDI music. 2D graphics that abused Photoshop's gradient, bevel and emboss features. Unfitting low-bitrate sound effects on games. Moraffware games had this exact aesthetic and I was so weirded out yet attracted to it as a kid.

I can't recall ever feeling like Vinny overreacts to anything, but that was a surprisingly serious/harsh reaction at 37:55 for a pretty harmless comment in my personal opinion, especially considering the face he drew just looks like a normal cartoonish face without any directly insulting characteristics. I'm going to assume there has been more malicious or insulting comments in the past or something (for what reason I have no idea, but I also don't watch Mike so maybe his viewers have developed a toxic culture or some shit?) and Vinny deciding he didn't want it in his chat and to confront it, and this chat member just happened to make a comment that fell into the category of "appearance + Mike". Or am I the one that is actually overreacting? Mainly curious if there's something I'm missing here.
