Something interesting I've noticed is that during the map cutscene in Brave Boy you can actually see a remnant of what appears to be a Mario sprite with Pikachu's face plastered on to it. Meaning this is effectively a rom hack of another rom hack! Joel had also played the Mario version of this game during his infamous Grand Dad stream. Man we've really come full circle, haven't we?
@KnownAsKenji Жыл бұрын
Many of these devices are running emulators for NES or SNES, in some cases it's possible to port actual ROMs into the system and they run, but the emulator generally isn't very good, better off running them on your phone. Probably easy enough to mod jank games with the romhack tools available, so it seems weird, but with the quality level of the non-emulated games, I guess they may as well go for that sort of ease.
@warbossgegguz679 Жыл бұрын
@@KnownAsKenji Most of them (or at least the cheaper ones) are systems-on-a-chip, typically Famicom/NES, as a secondary chip to the main board that is extremely dated and underpowered since they've been in use since the late 90s and basically haven't changed since then. There are some plug & play/Handheld companies like Powkiddy and a few others that as of recent do actually make decent hardware clones and emulators that are worth buying but those are WAY too upscale for Lexibook. If you're actually looking to emulate things well however, you're best options are head to the emulation general wiki and pick out the best ones in terms of accuracy and activity (which atm is Mesen2, bsnes, sameboy, Mupen64, m-GBA, Genesis Plus GX, ReDream, PCSX2, PPSSPP, desemu, and then Mednafen for everything else) and either get the exes or get the cores through retroarch. Outside of PC though the best option is just to get a modded PSP and/or CFW on a 3DS. the former is basically the only way to play PSX games portably well, and the latter is the best way to play DS games in general. Also, speaking as someone with more experience with the latter, TwilightMenu++ and VC Injection are great. Just be sure to have your SD card formatted to the proper clusters, otherwise there's screen wrap on unofficial VC GBA games. As you may have guessed from this essay I have a fair bit of experience in the topic (Yo Ho and all that). Everything listed here but Dolphin and PCSX2 can run on even modest PCs (though DeSeMu is really not that great even on the most recent builds in my experience, you're better off with flashcards or bootstrapping on a 3DS. Likewise for Citra vs. a CFW 3DS), so unless the goal is portability there's no real reason to buy this sort of stuff outside of the mild comedic value.

Since this is one of the only times I'll be able to, here's some interesting things I've learned about Lexibook over the last 6 years since binyot first introduced me to them: In addition to terrible plug & plays and handhelds, they make a bunch of other cheap toys you can find on Amazon. In contrast to most of these bootleg Chinese, lead paint, sweatshop, toy companies, they actually have managed to get some legit licenses from Disney and the like to slap on their crappy ripoffs and toys. From what I've seen and from other channels that explore this sort of stuff out of morbid curiosity, while the games are still trash ripoffs or romhacks, the actual build and screen quality of their handhelds is pretty decent astoundingly. Also apparently they make the handhelds that can be bought by prisoners while they're doing time. They're the same usual 50-in-1 type crap they put out, but translucent to ensure you can't use them to smuggle anything... so they have very low standards when it comes to getting money to say the least. And while everything about them is chinese (obviously) they're technically a French company. There's almost nothing about them online outside of product listings, so I've had to do a lot of gruella research and investigating to uncover what little info I have. Their "about us" section on their website is just typical corporate fluff, but it's not uncommon for French, Italian, or other less "politically active" European countries to do a lot of shady business with China and even North Korea, And they seem to be one of those. They're just particularly "prolific" and large from the looks of it. I even read their financial reports and other "investor interest" type documentation that they have available, and it's all extremely vague and brief, but from what I can see that's in English and guestimate what's in French (as a finance major) while they're "based" in France majority of their assets are in China and Eastern Europe... and they do make a pretty decent amount of money, mainly because their overhead is microscopic thanks to chinese labor. Coincidentally, they were founded just after the Iron Curtain fell so presumably they were set up to capitalize on the flood of low-cost labor into the market as a result. So yeah, pretty shady company that seemingly managed to sucker in a fair few brands purely because of how "successful" they are. I do love looking into these "technically legal" types of companies though. Feels like I'm uncovering a conspiracy or something with all the digging I have to do and all the shady stuff I end up finding. And when every channel I watch that looks into bootleg/garbage tech has featured SOME Lexibook product (Vinny, Ashens, The Retro Future, Rerez, and probably a ton more I don't know about), my curiosity was piqued.

@warbossgegguz679 Жыл бұрын
the main reason it sounds terrible in the OG and here (though to a lesser extent) is slow and crappy emulation. Vinny's played the song at proper speed and it sounds fine and not like a discordant mess. Edit: can now confirm it sounds fine when it's not on one of these. The Billiards game is a hack of Lunar pool, so just give that a search to see how it's supposed to sound.
@Hijiri_MIRACHION Жыл бұрын
@@warbossgegguz679 Billiards 2008's music is a hacked version of Lunar Ball, seemingly created by randomly changing some notes. As for the crappy emulation, it might have something to do with the region the ROM was in. Vinny is an American (so NTSC), while Lexibook, being a European company, probably only tests these in a PAL setting. Given how recent this one is, Lexibook seemingly learnt their lesson, or Vinny probably just changes the format now. Or maybe it's a big coincidence and the ROM being slower is just a hardware thing.

As you have to know, the game is a romhack of the Macross game for the NES, the difference is that they left the tracks unchanged

Love how the Xevious romhack didn't even bother to change the name of the ship, or the sprite for the second enemy type.

2:18:00 I used to have a bootleg hand held a couple years ago called the Dreamgear 220 in one. And even though I have so many good consoles and hand helds, I'm gonna buy a new one. This was unironically my favorite game on it. I must've beaten it 3 or 4 times.

@@icheeva1 it's a shame because his humor is still intact, I just have 0 interest in watching them. I respect the hustle but I miss the era of him reviewing obscure garbage games and weird 90s tv/movies.

Holy shit this entire stream is just nonstop sensory overload, from the barve boys to the LEMOHN to the incessant music of 'Wisdom Horse'. Another absolute classic from Vinny and the Lexibook

I'm convinced that 99,9% of the music was not made by humans or AI, it just appeared, probably from the depths of hell.

1:52:42 It sounds like the only music they ever heard was a few jazz songs, and they vaguely remember how they sounded. This string of beeps is the result of trying to make what they think music sounds like.

The worst part about this system is you could probably buy an actual used Wii for less nowadays. This doesn't even serve the cheap alternative market anymore.

Oh my god! Those NES sports game ROM hacks/bootlegs, you know, like the one where you throw javelins and stuff? All with the same kinda graphical style? Those are the ones that absolutely traumatised me as a kid because of the awful noises when you lost! I didn't wanna play on that plug 'n play ever again because of them. Crazy that Vinny unearthed these deep memories of mine almost 2 decades later. Does anyone know what specific game these were based on? I really need to put this childhood mystery to rest. EDIT: Right, it was Track and Field.

My top playable game of this video might be the solitaire @1:03:32 , just because it might be a Plug & Plague first of a game having generation based on a seed, like what Minecraft does but much much simpler. Could be fun to try and find tough seeds to challenge friends with, at least fun as far as plug & play games go.

Laughing at Vinny's reaction to the Xevious music in the one ROM hack. Yes, Xevious's music is really that bad. No, it's not a loop from the beginning of a better song.
