I think the reason Mario doesn't have his hat is because he's dreaming. Have you ever heard of someone going to bed with a hat on? Maybe he took it off and it states at beginning that Mario is asleep but feels awake. So he knows in his dream that he's not wearing his hat?

Putuk22 High accuracy emulators like snes9x + old romhacks = epic crashes. ZSNES should have been used with hacks just as old as these...unless vinny had problems streaming with ZSNES in the first place.

I never used snes9x before. ZSNES never failed me so far, so I always stick to it. Bah, if I wasn't a dumb person who perfers to watch vidya than playing 'em. Besides, most of the Lovecraft references would be lost on me, with Vinny I can at least guess some context from what he says.

I think i know how they did the part where it looks like you're running on the background. There's probably a bunch of invisible foreground pieces lined up in an otherwise empty space, lined up so that it looks like you're on those background platforms when you're standing on them.

***** Well, turns out you're right. I went and poked around in the rom with Lunar Magic and found out for myself that yes, you can make background tiles that you can stand on... and it doesn't really require any special coding. It's something you can do by simply placing standable blocks in the background within the editor.

The Carlz0r Yeah technically in the original game the cave areas with floating yellow chunks in lava were the background (Layer 2) but rather than have them scroll automatically they set it to scroll at the same speed as the background so it appears to be the standard in game background. In theory you could also do it with Layer 3 but that would require a bit more hacking.

Not quite true (I know your comment's 6 years old but still). The tiles are part of a background layer (Layer 2, same thing Lucetube pointed out) that moves slower than Mario does. It is as simple as it looks.

This is probably the best romhack I've ever seen. It also does Lovecraft really well. Probably one of the better examples of Lovecraftian horror outside of literature. Real bummer about that crash.

This is so well made and seems really fun, although kind of mindscrewy, to play. I love the whole weirdly angeled, endless fall thing. Vinny was right, Mario was meant to be made into a Lovecraftian game. And by the 19:34 mark I was mindblown. The only thing I don't understand are the black cats you can collect though. Which Lovecraft story is that a reference to?

I looked him up and sent him an email to ask if he believed his rom was stable enough to put on a cartridge and play on the SNES. He believed it could so I paid a guy to make me a cart and it works perfectly! He even made me a custom label for it. Very cool to show people that come over they are like what the hell

This might well be the wrong place to look for help, but I've really wanted to play this hack lately, and I'm having a problem that I haven't seen anywhere else. The game starts up without issue, and then the intro cutscene plays. After the text fades away, instead of Mario walking to the right with the name of the level in the BG, I'm dropped into a pit to my death. The text "TIME UP" is displayed, and the game softlocks. Sorry for the wall of text. I'm getting desperate.

This is an amazing hack, all in all. It's amazing what some people can do with the SMW engine, even if the gameplay makes it such that people probably wouldnt be able to get through it on the original hardware, sans savestates.
