57:20 I think Vinny doesn't really understand the significance of Sora here and Sakurai's methodology of making Smash a "video game museum". He has said before that one of his wishes is to show the appeal of Japanese gaming to the rest of the world, which explains why there are exactly two non-Japanese owned characters in the entire roster (Banjo and Steve) with one having a cult following in Japan and the other being MASSIVE in Japan. So that would cut out Master Chief as Halo has no presence in Japan, alongside all the other meme picks people point to like a Mortal Kombat rep or Ubisoft or whatever. The only other one not represented that could make it would be an Undertale rep or Crash Bandicoot. And that brings us to Sora. Ignoring the fact it's already an incredibly big franchise (32 million in sales over only 3 mainline games), its by far THE most fitting final character on a global scale that doesn't cut out any significant region. You can throw series out there that are bigger overall, but no other one has such a big presence in all the major regions (the Americas, Europe, and Asia) than Kingdom Hearts (Grand Theft Auto is getting there, but it needs more time). Then you add in the symbolic nature of it being a crossover game closing out a crossover game and the total NIGHTMARE it must be to work with Disney and there's literally no better choice. Vinny doesn't have to like the character. I don't. But you can't really deny how big this is.

I've looked into the specifics a bit more and from what I could find on the web it seems to be extremely difficult to attain a license, even if it's only for a short period of time and for one or a few characters. There seems be some kind of fee around USD 100.000$ for just the license itself, as well as a 15-20% rate on each purchase of the product with the material included in it. So yeah, it's no wonder Nintendo didn't license them.

I feel the same. Never played KH, but it seems like a lot of people wanted this character, and it seemed like a big stretch (Disney rules over their IPs with an iron fist). It was definitely a surprise since I think the general consensus was that he was most likely not going to get in.

To me Sora wholeheartedly embodies that spirit of magic and wonderment and easily fits in the slot of a "finale" character that gives a certain gravitas and catharsis. I mean just listen to the music that comes along with him. It's beautiful, it oozes feeling. I think many other characters being asked for would have been excellent additions to the super smash roster. But for the "FINAL" spot to bookend it all? nah. Sora was the perfect pick for that.

As a massive fan of Kingdom Hearts since the first game, go ahead and make fun of it. Honestly, how could you not? The story is insanely convoluted and silly. Admittedly, that's part of its charm for me, but I could spend hours talking about how equally dumb it is. Insanely hyped for Sora, though, the noises I made when I saw the keyblade were indescribable.

Not everyone has played Halo, so it would have been the same for Master Chief, not everyone has played Doom, so it would have been the same for Doomguy. At the end of the day, people who are happy, are happy, and people who aren’t, aren’t, just like with every single Smash reveal. Wash, rinse, repeat and whatnot.

So I thought Crash was more suited, but Sora was my second pick knowing how impossible this was and how many people's dreams would come true and I'm only a casual KH fan who was more into it a while ago and makes fun of it a lot (I was in the mindset though of being content if they didn't chose some overly trendy meme three year old game that's already lost steam over those who've been waiting to get in forever). But like this was hype and got me emotional. Like those final shots of Sora flying through the stages and then shaking Mario's hand, just come the fuck on. What a way to end. My brain also had that disbelief of "This can't be real" seeing him on stage lol. I'm surprised they kept the keychain too, so weird to see in Smash. Anyway Nickelodeon will keep my occupied until then lol.
