Simply sublime... This group should be held in the same regard as the Tony Williams Lifetime.

I think that if jazz legends, will be alive to see what jazz fusion has became, they will all just smile and agree to the groove...the purpose of jazz is to challenge the audience..therefore most people will call this music ugly...

I remember listing to this while repairing equipment at Westlake Audio. Vinnie and Michael recorded there. It was awsome listening to them warm up through the door of the studio!

I listen to mostly metal. Somewhat extreme technical stuff that most metalheads think is the be all...end all of musicianship. If all those people actually realized how much harder it is to play stuff like this they would be amazed. Not that it is a competition or anything because that is childish but i'm almost amazed that i could listen to this band all day over most the crazy heavy stuff i like. I wish these guys would put out another live cd.

To percussionfish: you say you are more of a groove drummer. More of a groove drummer than who? Vinnie Colaiuta? He has demonstrated his ability to groove thousands of times. I agree with one of the other comments someone made not all songs are supposed to groove. This song has more of a half time, spacey feel to it. Yes everyone has the right to their own opinion, but that doesn't mean their opinion is always right.

Do you guys remember Bob Ross the painter? He would just blot his brush on canvas and it would look exactly like a group of trees. He'd splash something on it almost randomly and it would look exactly like a house, perfectly situated in its context. Vinnie's the same way. When I hear a new song, the licks would initially sound too much, crude or too busy, like his heavy use of the china. That is, until I heard the whole thing, and it would be amazing. I'd listen to the song a second time and it was perfect. It's like "what are you doing that here for?. . . . .Oh, that's why." I know its an odd way to put it, but suffice it to say he's the Bob Ross of drums.

@stretch54 i'm pretty sure fess is right. he played ping rides throughout the eighties and most of the nineties; and you can get a spread like that from a ping but what you really need to understand is that he got to pick the best cymbals in zildjians vault for years. you can't expect a ping you get at guitar center to sound like the one he's playing here; it simply won't fucking happen. their cymbals are incredibly inconsistent. that's why you'll see zildjian endorsees playing bosphorus!
@stretch5414 жыл бұрын
I don't think you get that kind of "spread" out of a ping ride. I haven't bought new cymbals in a hundred years but I think a Ping doesn't open up like this. Vinnie has always liked versatile ride cymbals where he can get some sustain out of them when necessary. I concur wholeheartedly.

I love Vinnie and I tremendously respect the musicianship of these players but the songwriting seems to exist only for the purpose of rhythmic and melodic complexity and not for the purpose of artistic expression...and goodness, David Garfield wears the cheesiest shirts, has the cheesiest hair, and uses the cheesiest keyboard and synth tones lol!
