The emperor’s justification for killing Leto felt appropriate in the scene, as it was not an internal description of his feelings, but a self-righteous justification that he is telling Paul while still refusing to yield. He’s not confessing honestly. If he told Paul that he killed his father for being a charismatic threat, that would be admitting his own weakness in front of others which would feel out of place and cowardly for a proud emperor.

I don’t think Shaddam meant that Leto was simply too weak to be an effective leader… I think he meant that he was too noble, which he saw as a weakness itself, and recognized that if Leto took power, and he was poised to do, it would end in disaster for the galaxy, because you need an iron fist to lead, or something… which is probably true, considering how Leto II ends up leading.

Binty, you misinterpreted the emperor’s reasoning for killing Leto. It is still because he’s too likable, righteous, and charismatic. The Baron says so in Dune 1 and the emperor says he’s weak in this one for the same reason, because he lets his heart make the choices instead of being cold and analytical
@weirdblackcat8 ай бұрын
Yeah, referring to a leader as "weak" is a common trope (with real life examples), and it means "they have empathy".
@tom901ful8 ай бұрын
It is basically Machiavelli's philosophy, you can be loved and righteous, but other leaders who aren't will perceive you as weak and not as a threat, so they will overthrow you. So they see you as "weak".
@DrunkenCoward18 ай бұрын
My interpretation of that line isn't that the emperor thought Leto was "weak", as in "shitty". He obviously loved Leto, this becomes much clearer in the book. I mean, love as in, really very respects. I think Shadam was throwing some shade at Paul, some anger. He means Leto was weak because he couldn't wriggle free from the trap. I think he hoped that Leto might defeat the Harkonnen.

I totally get what Vinny meant by Stilgar's growing fanaticism being terrifying after being funny at first I wish he went more into it, but you can see this usually stone-faced demeanor slowly become excited and almost pathetically enamored with Paul. You can SEE that man will kill ANYONE if Paul told him to by the end
@spacebassist7 ай бұрын
the book had a fantastic line for that near the end, right before the last fight: "Paul saw how Stilgar had been transformed from the Fremen naib to a creature of the Lisan al-Gaib, a receptacle for awe and obedience. It was a lessening of the man, and Paul felt the ghost-wind of the jihad in it" i finished the book before seeing the film and seeing Stilgar slowly give in to that fanaticism felt almost like it did in the book, he's a bit more enthused in the film so it's slightly less gradual but it was a similar experience. after some point you realise, he's not Stilgar the Fremen leader anymore, he's Stilgar the right-hand man of Muad'dib edit: not quite related but it's also wild to me that readers back then missed obvious things like Paul feeling failure wash over him as he realises what he's done, the constant looming threat of the jihad and walking a tightrope to the one future that would avoid it, Jessica telling Paul to ease off a bit, literally voicing her discomfort at how much he's embracing the prophecy it's borderline telling the reader directly: "this is not good"

I thought the film was gorgeous, well-made, with a strong vision from a director who knew exactly how to approach the material in a way that makes the story suitable for the screen. I feel like it's fantastic from a visual spectacle standpoint, and that the construction of the story's world was intricate without being so dissimilar as to be unrecognizable. That all being said, I've never felt an emotional resonance from the characters in Dune. I like Lynch's take on the story from the 80s, and I like this movie, both for different reasons. But I've never really been able to care about the story or it's players, and this movie didn't affect that for me. The characters are all played extremely well, casting was spot on. But due to the nature of the story being focused on a bunch of shitty people, it was hard to care about anything that happened. Unless I was just feeling bad for the supporting cast committing themselves to a galactic war for the sake of some old stories perpetuated to control a populace. Which... That's honestly the world around us, and I do appreciate when fiction can present those things to us in an entertaining fashion, rather than our depressing reality.

Yeah, kinda felt the same. It was well-made, but if I had to compare it to Villeneuve, something like Arrival, it was missing a lot that made me really want to watch it for almost three hours. Might still set up something I end up liking way more than the individual parts, but so far, it was just decent entertaining for me.

She is basically the reader/viewer; there should be a sense of dread and conflicting emotions for the audience to see what is transpiring. Zendaya did a fantastic job towards the end of the movie to show, completely visually, her emotions and care for Paul and how he's also embracing the false prophecy. She's a great "in" for how I felt as a book reader seeing Paul diving into what becomes a massacre.

It's terrible and complete character assassination. Also, Paul HAS to do what he did. Not really a "false prophecy" because what he puts into motion SAVES THE HUMAN RACE.
@spacebassist7 ай бұрын
i'm a little concerned you may have some bias,@@Kwisatz-Chaderach jokes aside, going off book 1, my takeaway was "damned if you do, damned if you don't" but it's also interesting that he thought he had the power to stop the Bene Gesserit's consequences by himself. that to me foreshadows how easily he grows to be comfortable with the power (not the prescience kind) he acquires. obviously he knows that the jihad would happen because of him (and he saw the one future where it wouldn't) but it speaks to his belief in his own power as a person, to think that he can push it the other way i think this quote from the end of book 1 describes my other perception, i thought that surely dying before he met the Fremen would stop or lessen the impact of the jihad: "And Paul saw how futile were any efforts of his to change any smallest bit of this. He had thought to oppose the jihad within himself, but the jihad would be. His legions would rage out from Arrakis even without him. They needed only the legend he already had become. He had shown them the way, given them mastery even over the Guild which must have the spice to exist. A sense of failure pervaded him... " (p.452, then he fights Feyd-Rautha) there's also this line which makes me think that he could never walk that tightrope because the futures were too complex to say he could affect the changes he intended: "The prescience, he realized, was an illumination that incorporated the limits of what it revealed-at once a source of accuracy and meaningful error. A kind of Heisenberg indeterminacy intervened: the expenditure of energy that revealed what he saw, changed what he saw" (~p279) (before he takes the waters of life and gains absolute clarity, which he does after getting "a certain spice tolerance that made prescient visions fewer and fewer" p.411) i honestly wonder if his first visions were showing him the futures where he lived, because he didn't want to die in the desert. he wanted to get to the Fremen and strike back at the Harkonnens. no bene gesserit and her son, no Lisan al-Gaib. no Lisan al-Gaib, no jihad (or so one would hope) he saw more as time went on (and with the help of spice, then the waters of life) so i think it's possible he didn't see it all that first time before meeting the Fremen. considering that just seeing the future could change it, and he only saw it for a moment the first time ("As swiftly as it had come, the sensation slipped away from him, and he realized the entire experience had taken the space of a heartbeat" p.188), it's unknown what else he would've seen had he (somehow) mastered his ability before interacting with the Fremen i've just started 2 but it's clear to me so far that he's still confident he can preserve the future, now by surviving whatever his rivals have planned for him, to the point that maybe this was always in him and part of the future consequences are because of his willingness to embrace anything for "the greater good". he wants to affect positive change but his very nature creates a feedback loop with the prophecy to only end up perpetuating it the prophecy itself is like quicksand, the more he tries to resist its ultimate consequence, his actions only heighten his stature to the Fremen and leaning into the messiah perception to steer the course could have only led to disaster (shy of absolute perfection, which he couldn't manage) i don't think he's evil or wrong, to be clear. i think his story is fascinating and brings up a lot of thoughts about fate and the unmatched power of pure belief, i'm eager to read on and see what comes of all this in Messiah

@@amunpamun1312 i did get a small feeling of comic relief, but i finished the book just before watching and this quote came to mind: "In that instant, Paul saw how Stilgar had been transformed from the Fremen naib to a creature of the Lisan al-Gaib, a receptacle for awe and obedience. It was a lessening of the man, and Paul felt the ghost-wind of the jihad in it." (p.441)

I would have liked to see more of the Spacing Guild and a Guild Navigator. Otherwise it was a basically a 9/10 movie for me. Great cinema adaptation.

You forgot a big component that they left out of the film due to the time skip. In the first book (dune part 2) paul has a child with Chani who is murdered as a baby.

I think if I had to put it into numbers, I'd rate the first one 7.5/10 and this new one a 9.5/10. Nearly perfect in everything it does. I rarely feel much tension in action scenes anymore but it was palpable almost every time. Chalomet killed it this time around, and was much more compelling as you saw him embrace the messiah role. I know Villieneuve is generally opposed to showing any deleted material, but I'd love to see extended editions of these, like how LotR got. I miss the chapter about the conservatory, and the baron really could have used more screentime.

I wish the _Dune_ story had been split into three parts, rather than two. the plot felt more and more rushed as _Part 2_ went on. …and then make _Messiah_ into the fourth movement to finish things off, like a symphony 👌

My one major complaint is the absence of the Spacing Guild. They are a major player and the entire reason why the emperor and all the great houses come to Arrakis at the end. Paul threatens to break the ecosystem of Arrakis and so destroy the spice forever, which would have huge consequences. In the movie he just invites the emperor and the emperor accepts. The movie is 2:30 hours long and at times it feels like not much happens, I think they could have integrated the spacing guild and maybe removed one of the scenes of Rabban attacking the fremen or removed the bit about the nuclear warheads. It would have made the whole final sequence much more nuanced and not so oversimplified.
@kaneda73688 ай бұрын
At times it feels like not much happens? Damn I didn't think I'd hear that. From my point of view we were getting treated to a new event basically every minute, to the point where I had to go to the bathroom for the longest time but couldn't because I didn't want to miss anything. Finally gave in at one point but came back and felt like I missed a bunch of stuff just from being gone for 2 minutes.
@mintyblur8 ай бұрын
@@kaneda7368 That's fair. I've read the book so maybe there's some bias on my part about knowing what's happening. I think if something could be cut though for the sake of adding the spacing guild, the two things I mentioned would make sense.

7:38 Why was he hesitant to mention Josh Brolin? 7:57 Also why did he call Lea Seydoux a giant actor? 😅
@Elfenlied86753098 ай бұрын
Maybe because Josh Brolin's character was presumed dead in the first movie? Maybe because Josh Brolin is a wife beater? I don't know. Could be either or.

I think Walken actually played it perfectly. The people really criticizing him I think were imagining his delivery to be way more exaggerated than it really was on-screen.

The pacing of events felt too quick to me. It could have used another half hour or two of just character interactions as the whole time I was thinking of all the books scenes that take place between the movie scenes. It made me wonder if it makes any sense to someone who hasn't read the book; I could hear a few people during and after the movie explaining what the meaning of various things to their friends who clearly hadn't read the book. It felt Dark Souls esque in its lore transparency. The scenes I liked most were the Feyd and Gurney introductions and the final scene.

@@killswitch6361 Fair enough. I guess I just read too much and watch too little. The movie and books are effectively different genres, where the movie is mostly action the book is mostly intrigue and philosophy.

@@BradleyZS I feel like the philosophy of the book was shown through the movie. It was most likely a lot more subtle though, lots of interpretation and reading between the lines I guess. I feel like I got the moral and cautionary tale of the story through the movie. Although to what extent I don't know cause I haven't read the books.
@spacebassist7 ай бұрын
@@killswitch6361 it took me a while to understand anything in part one. i still liked it but the book made a lot of things click. you're right about reading between the lines because it leaves *a lot* unsaid and i probably need to get better at inferring things when information is that shrouded. i probably would've understood more of 2 blind compared to 1. also i feel like the films skim out a lot of what was delivered through monologue, (finished the book before watching). i don't think they're weaker for it but i kinda see them as slightly alternate "versions", especially with 2 doing away with the timeskip and Alia, and Jessica pushing Paul into being Lisan al-Gaib, rather than his natural leaning into the role (to Jessica's dismay). also he drank the waters of life in the book because "His body had slowly acquired a certain spice tolerance that made prescient visions fewer and fewer … dimmer and dimmer." (p.411) it was his own choice, which again made Jessica worry and shows Paul as being more committed to taking that role if it means making it to the one good future

I think blade runner in general doesn't lend itself to mainstream appeal so 2049 not being a massive hit doesn't shock me, even though I and anyone I know that's seen it, whether they were a blade runner fan before or not seemed to really like it. It has the same effect as the LOTR movies for me where you just don't feel how long it is at all, nor does it feel like an ordeal on repeat watches. Though I gotta say lately anything Denis Villeneuve touches seems to turn out well, which is nice because he apparently likes directing the nerdy shit I like.
