i always find it funny that The Exorcist resulted in Tubular Bells being widely seen as spooky music. if you listen to the full song/album (it's an LP-length suite divided into two parts, one for each side of vinyl), it's pretty much just classical music with rock instruments (plus a movement where mike oldfield makes caveman noises while absolutely plastered and a jaunty cover of "The Sailor's Hornpipe" for the outro).

Honestly, if people approached Mario World with the idea of making a semi-spooky, fun level themed around a haunted house or haunted mansion theme park ride, it could be great. The game just sucks for trying to make actual horror.
