I rarely see these locks anymore and when I do it’s mostly with 1 or 2 other locks to either replace it or back it up, which is pretty wise considering!

I had the same lock on my garage in the late 70s early 80s. Worked fine to keep my cortina safe. Great seeing one again 👍👍

I remember a time when, even though people knew that wafer locks really didn't offer much security, there wasn't as much of a need to prevent burglary and theft. Many folks didn't bother to lock them because they had no reason to not feel safe. Your adept demonstration here was a trip down Memory Lane.

Wow , I haven't seen these in decades ! Back in days , late 1980's to be exact , I had it on my own garage and it's still there , but not working anymore , it's just to cover hole that fits the lock. As a very small kid , it amazed me how easy is to reconfigure it to open one way or another , without any hassle. :) Mine had rubber around disk , so to say and shutter , making it more resistant to corrosion. :) Even then , I felt it's weak and not so much secure , as it moved a bit even without key and there was quite weak rod that went into hole in concrete. :) Interesting piece of history and before rolo doors with multiple locking points became affordable to ordinary people. :)

I do see some crappy half plastic clones of these in some ropey old housing estates but, yep, they’ve riveted a few hasps and hefty padlocks in place after the garage got broken into with a sturdy screwdriver. Still, a nice piece for your collection! Thanks for sharing.

Neat old lock, and a quick pick! I hadn't given it much thought, but my last garage had that type and rather than bother with a key I just put blockers in the track inside and used the walk-in door. Too old and small for a modern car, but it was full of stone carving tools I didn't want getting legs!!

Mostly replaced by electric openers here, which don’t offer much more security than the lock you picked.

Great job picking and great video. This is a cool vintage lock, I have a Cardale wafer lock but in euro profile shape, it looks like a garage lock too. Don´t know from where I get it, there is no Cardale locks in use here in Spain, never seen other one. Thanks for showing my friend ;o))

Basic question - how do you know which way to turn to unlock - is it always clockwise and also which side of the keyway are the pins? Other than that this has given me confidence to tackle a lock for which we have lost the key!

Then is it any better than a car lock of that period? I went to school with a lot of dodgy kids. Somehow I avoided prison and ended up working for NACRO, helping ex cons get into training and jobs. I opened my father's car for him when he could not find the keys. I also opened by brother's after all the locks had been screwdrivered, in under 2 minutes. I wonder if a modern electronic lock with just an infra red sensor through the door might be better, even if you have to recharge it. Actually include a supercapacitor and connect it to the mains, or put a battery in the key.
@LockNoob
@LockNoob 5 жыл бұрын
Probably not, car door locks were always a bit rubbish, but then the glass wasn’t tempered either so... :-)

@@LockNoob More than a bit, REALLY RUBBISH. Usually held in by a metal clip, stick a screwdriver in, hit with hammer, turn. If you are lucky the clip pops off the back. Pull activating rod, lock open. I used a custom bit of flexible plastic, put it in by the window, hook the activation rod, pull, open. I once was riding my bicycle when someone closed the door to their car with keys inside. Used a spare spoke to open theirs. Was a Range Rover....
