Vintage is many times a nostalgia for the past....I think lots of people want to surround themselves with things that remind them of a happier time in their earlier life.

I love mixing vintage and antique pieces with my modern pieces. I also absolutely love your dresser in white with those awesome gold pulls. So nice...great job.

I love me some vintage! I got a lot of herilooms from my family, beautiful old wardrobes and a dresser. Now I distinctly look for vintage peices and would call my style ecclectic.

This isn't directed necessarily to this video, but does bring up a point worth considering. As a lover of all things antique and vintage, it drives me crazy when ppl think slapping paint onto an antique is refinishing it - antique furniture especially. You see it all over marketplace and flea markets - advertising their refinished antique or rare vintage find... isn't it so much prettier?? I just want to cry - especially if it's a rare piece. The wood they used back then was high quality old growth wood, most pieces specifically chosen for their beautiful grain patterns. To give that piece the love and respect it deserves, re-sand it, stain it maybe with a stain that highlights the wood, and re-apply a new protective finish - but research how to do it properly, or pay a professional. For the love of God, please don't paint over it!! We've got stores with cheap ugly wooden furniture and decor you can paint all day long, if you don't like the wood look. Place some vintage style hardware on it and call it your refinished work of art if you will, but please respect the antiques and stop painting them!

I don't mind painting wood especially if it's a cheap piece. As Christopher Lowell said, "Just because it's wood, doesn't mean it's good." But I don't think everything should be painted. You can always remove paint as this woman did with the 50s chairs.

My advice is be careful with trends. The whole idea with incorporating antique and vintage into the home is just that. Do not spray paint or chaulk paint a beautiful antique just to make it fit into your color scheme. The only pieces I would ever paint are french and swedish pieces that would normally have been painted or pieces that are damaged and would benefit from a coat of paint. My experience is trends change as fast as changing your underwear. If you base your style on current trends you will be forever redecorating and spending money on things that have no meaning or soul. Buy things you love and don't put things in your home because Billy Jean Sally Sue says they are a must have or your home will be dated. I have furniture pieces in my home that have been with me for 30 years. If you buy things you truly love you will soon have a beautifully curated home unique to your own style.

Saw a great baseboard /ceiling molding trick on tv decorating show once: designer added a half round molding about 2 inches or so above/below the existing trim, then painted the trims, and the wall between them with the same trim colour. Voila! Deep trim with little work.

I’d add that colour schemes can do a lot to give a room a vintage look. I’ve just painted my walls, doors and woodwork in my bedroom the same deep mossy green, and it looks fantastic. I know a lot about vintage style already, but still enjoyed this video, and have been watching many of your other videos lately too. Thanks 😊

I really like your clarification on Antique vs Vintage. I would add an additional distinction between Reproduction (close recreation of an extant or attested item) and Retro (evoking earlier aesthetic sensibilities in a newly-designed item). I don't know how common Reproduction is in furniture and the like, but matching existing woodwork is fairly common, and I think certain iconic wallpapers get reproduced, now and again.

Vintage mirrors are a great way to go. They can be shockingly cheap and don’t need to be perfect…because vintage.

I preferred it in that cherry red. Lol. But that’s just me. That said, it still looks lovely in white. I’m weird about painting older pieces, even if they’re just vintage and not antique. But then I’m vintage, so there’s that. 😂 Nice content though and still, exceptional work. 💜

ooo that is a really great topic actually.... there are a lot of white paints to chose from. it is all about the undertone. Blues are cool, pinks are warm... Yellows are earthy.... it can go drastically wrong fairly easily. The best advise i have is buy the sample pots ( usually around $5 )and test the ones your thinking of on your walls in your lighting. It truly is something you need to see in the space and not just in a store or online :).

Would love your thoughts on painting for a mixed modern/vintage home. In the old days, sometimes the baseboards and doors were deep colors rather than a tone of white. Is this so out of date it should be shelved or is there a way to do this with a modern twist?

I would say it comes to editing and how you group things together. my thought is if you can focus on items that pair well together, even perhaps in a complementary colour pallet then you can streamline the look of a maximalist or vintage eclectic space. How I edit, is I put it all together and then step back and see how it feels... if it feels to busy, I remove some items and try again. Sometimes it takes a few edits over the course of living with the space to see what works and what just doesn't feel right :).

Modern farmhouse and light grey lol no. T-Rex fossils want to say or unicorn skull or anything can think of with 3D printer technology lol like my pokemon mew-two skull lol and only habe leather rugs which the huge box store At Home frequently has but can’t say dark and light cant coexist ? Bedroom has two black opposing walls and two grey opposing walks but love to layer like metal risers or vintage bins on-top of a nice light raw wood circle table riser which glued black metal claw feet on it lol wish could put pics in comments would be nice lol Again love your design info and loving this eclectic style view pints of pertinent designs which belong and need more recognition for lol. These styles are far harder to get right and consistent verge of niche and overkilling ideas. so maximizing these styles designs personally takes a lot of time and constantly exiting the smallest layered decisions. Lol far harder than clan and minimal store bought design trends so yes learning and editing skills is its own academic arena and appreciate your hightailed and informative channel content its far more enjoyable than copy cat DiYing to death mass made or sought over trends like restoration hardware pieces, which can’t knock lol esp bc they do make quality but yeah thanks and your great subscribed and watching it all lol ☠️💀😊 fresh swag and you are legit designer and content creator that is not more of the same ⚙️❤ ❤💀⚙️😝😜

I actually did this YEARS ago... I think about 12 and I used an oil based paint specifically for furniture. It unfortunately is no longer allowed to be used. ( I am in Canada) It was sold at Home Hardware. I am going to use the Benjamin Moore Scuff Ex paint to repaint it black, it is going to be a matt finish... fingers are crossed that it will be aok. Furniture in the past was always done with oil based paints to help prevent chipping.

Something needs to be at least 20 years old to be considered "vintage," while an item can be called "antique" if it is 75 years or older.
