The chair doilie is called an antimacassar and was primarily to protect the furniture from the hair oil "macassar" which was used by men throughout that period! Fascinating isn't it? 😁😁. Thanks for the video - I really enjoyed it.💕

@@InteriorDesignHub I'm 70 and live in the UK. My grandparents had antimacassars and my grandad and my uncles oiled their hair. (I think Elvis Presley did as well, a bit later though, and probably with Brylcreem or similar! 😂😂)

My nanna had loads and loads of antimacassars. And matching arm covers. She had different styles through time passed down to her like victorian ones and Edwardian and 1920/30s ones from her mum and then her own from the 40s onwards. The styles of antimacassars through time are interesting in themselves. 😊

This video was very helpful to me! I want to go with Victorian decor but I think a person can get carried away and end up with a mess of conflicting colors, patterns and designs. I also didn’t want to be confined to the typical Tiffany lamps or traditional Victorian lamps. I love the exchange for older industrial / iron lighting. After some searching , I found feather lamps and rattan lamps that would fit really well in exchange for the Tiffany or fringe type lamps. But if all else fails, adding some palm and ferns is always a good start and add incrementally.

Great design ideas. Coal makes soot and its dusty and black. My Grandma only had a coal fire, it was very dusty and especially bringing it from the coal shed at the back of the house.

Such an informative video. I appreciate the historical information. It helps me understand the origins of the style; and “get it” better when I see a complex room like this. I love the architectural details and some of the ornamentation. When mixed with a more contemporary elements it creates such a nice juxtaposition that it elevates both styles. It is also an interesting alternative to all the common, played out styles we see nowadays. Well done.

Fantastic style. I think of the middle class CURIO CABINET as a symbol of the Victorian era. More people had more things and time for leisure and vacation. People would show off their wealth by showing off leisure time souvenirs, displaying wealth and sentimental richness. Gas lighting also left soot on walls making dark colors practical. May have also been practical for middle class clothing fashions. Heavy fabrics around windows were insulation for drafty windows. Swags, valances, fringe and excessive pattern and applied decorative layers was more display of wealth. Weaving of fabric, especially wool, linen and cotton was a major portion of British industrial expansion. So wool window coverings to insulate drafty windows does not surprise me. I almost never hear people talk about clothing fashions concurrently with interiors and architecture. For me, exaggeration is the one word that describes both. I think of exaggerated corset and bustle shapes as similar exaggerations of the camel-back curves on Victorian sofas. If you compare borrowed Victorian styles to the original styles, the Victorian exaggerated proportions, heaviness of mass and layers of detail. Compare to less massive classical styles, even Baroque and Paladin. Also industry prioritized mass production labor-minimization, speed and profit over thoughtful of aesthetician design. Following the 1851 Great Exhibition, the British government established a commissioned a study of British design. Subsequently examples contrasting bad and good design were displayed in the V&A Museum. Design leaders leaned into less detailed, simpler, more honest (less imitation and trompe l'oiel designs) and the Arts and Crafts movement began. Although William Morris patterns seem saturated, colorful and busy to us, his designs are flatter than the realism, detail, shading and perspective of earlier industrial design. Although actual Arts and Crafts goods were expensively handmade, the aesthetic was imitated by mass production industries. Doillies were pretty/lacy versions of furniture protectors. Hair oils, pomades and general wear would transfer to to the doilies that could be washed or replaced. I am wondering if parquet flooring was a way to utilize smaller pieces of wood at a time when the large oak planks were reserved for the British Royal Navy. I wonder if applied plaster design was also a method used because of scarcity and, therefore, expense of carved wood applications. I would really enjoy your perspective on the transition to BEAUX ARTS STYLE and how to insert contemporary style into a Beaux Arts architecture space or building.

My grandmother's house was heated with coal. Each winter morning she'd go down to the basement and shovel coal into the furnace. When I saw the bottoms of my bare feet were filthy, I thought my grandmother just didn't have a clean house. Only later did I realize it was coal dust. Until your video, never thought about the fact that her furniture must have had the same dust on it.

Having lived in Victorian homes and done restoration, (not remodeling) I've gone down to the plaster to repair, I learned about color. I had an oak stairway that had a very dark rust tan, almost the same as the wood- and stencils.. after three or four layers of early mid 20th century wall papers that had been painted over (yes, even on the ceiling).. after getting to the bottom of it all I decided to repaint it the same as it originally was.. very stunning.. I sold the house 20 yrs ago.. the new owner put up some rather cliche "victorian" damask and acanthus leaf borders.. seven years of resto to perfection and someone covers it.. go figure..

Tips - don’t use ring lights because they reflect in your glasses. - do use box lights facing away onto a wall so the light that reflects back on you is bright but soft. - don’t make apologies or excuses for informing people. - do edit out your excuses or mistakes. (I know it takes more effort and time but it will help grow your channel) Edit! You already know the importance of this. Find the important and/or fun facts and focus on those. I loved Victorian as child. My dream is a Queen Anne Victorian. That’ll never happen. I have a brass and iron bed from the Victorian era. I’ve noticed over the years, the things I’ve purchased as from the later Victorian era. Maybe, I’m more of Victorian farmhouse kinda girl. Lol.

I did a little digging, cause I wasn't 100% myself. Ok what I found out was that the pastel colours were more expensive to produce, but as time went on they become more affordable and therefore you began to see a movement towards using them more commanly then previously :) Thank you for the question and thank you for watching!

Doilies were on the chairs to protect the furniture from hair oil. Embroidery and crochet, various needle work is how women occupied their time. A gracious lady in that time period was busy with her hands but not “working”. Genteel ladies did needlework or art. Naturally, they had tons of needlework to display. It’s a dying art today which is sad because crocheted lace is incredibly beautiful.

To me in that dark Turq.room that modern light doesn't work. To me stick with the Victorian Style. Modern doesn't work. For me at least. I am Victorian and live in a town house .
