I’ve seen these replicas on Esty for cheap. I’d love to get one to set my room decor to late Victorian/Edwardian era style. I’d love to dress in that style too on a daily basis.

No you wouldn't. Go on Ebay and search for "Portable Wind Up phonograph". Make sure REPLICA is not in the description. You'll find a good, real, phonograph for a better price and that actually babies the records better than these Crapola's.

These replica gramophones do a bad job... Yes... But what to expect for their prices? :-) I think, these are great for decorative purpose or fun-use but not suitable for serious playback of records with historical value. The mechanics of these replicas are built unprecisely so records will wear fast. It is still enough to present it "in action" for a few times. I don't like to call such device a "Crapphone" like other do here.... It is a replica, not original. When you buy it, you know that. It is made for those who only wants a decorative and old-looking vintage item. It was never made for collectors or hardcore-users. I would call it "Grammophone replica for decorative uses only" :-)

@@digitalmediafan It doesn't worth it. The sound box isn't the only thing. The arm weight, the position of the needle on the record, the horn and the quality of the mechanism that rotates the platter are important too. A proper sound box doesn't improve anything if the needle is misaligned without a real chance to adjust it.

I completely agree with you. I have just bought one for decorative purposes. Even though it works, after a fashion, I intend to secrete a small Bluetooth speaker in the horn and play some quality recordings of old music from the internet. That will startle the oldies!

To most it might look fine (though the turntable's fluctuating might be a red flag), but anyone that knows their Gramophones will notice that this Gramophone is an Indian Reproduction one that is Crudely-Made and Taken From Various Parts and cobbled together to make it look Authentic. They tend to look just a bit too shiny for the supposed age and have a very tinny sound. If you want to see and hear the genuine article, here are some good links: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5PWiX96g7WphMU kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHTEhJ2oqdBje9E

This is a better reproduction, still horrible quality, and a tinny sound. Looks nice but they didn’t have embossed platforms or octagonal cases, and brass horns were very rare if it were antique.

@@unkotowatashi The sound of an authentic gramophone/phonograph doesn't necessarily come through well over a computer, but in-person they sound much better than these reproduction ones. Compared to an authentic one, the sound is far too innty and I believe the shoddy construction quality can actually wear down records.

Oooh, this is not how these are supposed to sound. (well yes, the vintage IMPORTS FROM INDIA are supposed to sound tinny, and distorted). Do yourself a favor. Get a real Windup up on Ebay. I purchased mine for 50 dollars. A 1922 Montgomery Ward portable phonograph. All I needed to do was buy a new reproducer which was 25 dollars. Total? 75 Dollars. The cost of your Replica that damages records and doesn't even reproduce the sound correctly (so what is the point), over 100 dollars (I've seen some cost 200). Outrageous, you've been had my friend.

May i suggest to anyone who wants a original horn Gramophone you can buy one for about £200 it wouldn't be a HMV one . But you can buy a original horn Gramophone from 1910 which is a nice machine and it wouldn't destroy your records so much better than a reproduction Gramophone which will be a disappointment .

A word of warning, this 'gramophone' and many others like it were all made in India during the 1960s from crude parts ripped out of cheap portable gramophones which were in plentiful supply back then. These fake gramophones can easily destroy your records and sound absolutely dreadful thanks to the flimsy sheet brass horn and cheap sound box. If you want a gramophone simply for decoration then sure go ahead and buy one but be careful not to spend any more than around £70 - 80 on one. If you want to get a cheap gramophone for the intent of playing records, find yourself a 1930s portable gramophone which are quality machines that will do no damage to your records as long as you change the needle after each play.

The sound is very poor from this crudely made Indian reproduction it sounds like the needle which may itself be too thin,and is not contacting the record correctly and will be doing it damage. For the same money you can buy a refurbished genuine vintage HMV 102 or a table top model portable wind up gramophone they are a thousand times better

thanks.. I thought the same.. it probably should damage records pretty bad. using god turntable is not an option too probably, because it costs billions and this vinyl will destroy a head in minutes.. so i'd for regular usb crap turntable for 30 pounds.. way more better quality then gramophone, and head won't be destroyed so fast in there.

These things sound like garbage compared to even the cheapest original machines. The needle on them also points straight down which cuts into the record more (45 degrees is about average). The tracking (how the needle is pulled relative to the grooves) is also awful on these as well which hurts sound quality.
@Striding888

Sounds thin tone with distortion and no bass due to non compliant diaphragm. If you heard a proper gramophone you would realise how bad this is. A non compliant soundbox will ruin your records also.

Uggh... the record is good, and the gramophone looks good, but hearing it makes me cringe. Why? Because the player is a crappy replica made in India with old parts and junk. These things are made like garbage and they totally rip you off when you buy one. It's so much better just to buy an original one and restore whatever parts you need to. These crapophones are hundreds of dollars (found one once for $350), do not sound good at all, shred records, and are pretty much 90% guaranteed not to last. First of all, the needle, as someone said, should point at an angle, whereas these point directly at the machine, therefore cutting deep into the record. The "metal" horn does not make for very good sound; back in the day they used wood or brass, which sounded better. In the replicas the motor breaks your eardrums, where on real ones just a little oil will do. I've also read reports of the soundbox just falling over, the horn is too loud, and that it usually doesn't have enough power to last one play. As I said earlier, the prices on these things are outrageous, sometimes reaching $400. I bought a 1910 Columbia Grafonola off of Craigslist for $200, and all it needed was some oil, and I love it. Usually the real gramophones on Ebay or Craigslist are about $50-$200 for the "working, but need some attention" category. If you're lucky you find ones that have been completely restored, and those are usually around $5-1500. So it's better to spare your records for a little longer, get better quality, get something guaranteed to last, and just splurge and buy a real one.
