To me, one of the most exciting aspects of owning 645 and 67 glass is knowing that at some point in the future when I get a GFX that I'll be able to use them there, too. Glad to see they perform admirably. Also, I don't normally mention a video's sponsor, but I *love* MPB. Their process is so easy and I find them highly competitive in price.

Absolutely, it's been cool to be able to use glass that I have already on this system. And yeah, MPB is awesome. Happy to have them on board as a sponsor, and it's great to hear you've had a good experience with them in the past. Not surprising to hear!

To be fair you can do this with almost any camera glass. Because Mirrorless flange distance is so tiny you can adapt literally anything to it from any mount. Which is great for older glass. However newer glass in future will be almost useless if flange distances increase again so that's the trade off.

When thinking about getting a new camera, MPB offered me a little over double of what the original camera company & 2 other big box stores offered.

I shoot the Pentax K-1 and 645D. I have some 645 glass as well as the legendary FA Ltds (31, 43 and 77). As an XT4 owner as well I am familiar with Fuji cameras and intend one day to add a GFX to my toolbag. I was aware of the compatibility of these lenses and was really nice to see such detailed comparisons (to confirm my belief that they will be fine and at least offer some character when wanted). It also makes buying into the GFX system a little less painful as I can get cracking on without breaking the bank balance too much to begin with! Thanks Kyle.

I recommend the Tamron 45mm 1.8 for the GFX, the far edges have a little fall off in resolution, color and a little bit vignetting. For earlier GFX cameras the "Vibration Compensation" could be helpful, it works. This lens is amazing on the GFX.

I think it's pretty hard to tell the difference and you are being SUPER critical in a good way for for an average user or someone printing with less expensive lens options I don't think it would really matter. I’ve been more drawn to vintage glass for my digital work as I rarely need auto focus or anything fancy and it’s so much more appealing with the prices. This comparison just proved that newer lens are indeed just glass as well. I’m fine with getting some imperfections. Especially ones that are easily corrected in post. Great video and nice portrait as well 🍻

I've moved away from autofocus lenses to vintage lenses as my photographic practice. It's just way more fun taking photos with a manual focus vintage lens, the tactile feel and image making process is just so much fun and the cost savings are enormous. I don't like the ultra sharpness that seems to be the "in" thing with new lenses at the moment, the saving in weight between a vintage lens as oppose to a modern autofocus lens is significant which for someone like myself who suffers back problems that saving in weight is a massive pro.
@BryanBirks

@@acmdv I agree. Just shot a wedding and thought I would need AF. Turns out that it makes things just a “little” more convenient. The size and weight of my Sigma 35mm is insane as well. Probably going to be looking into vintage glass soon and selling the Sigma.

Cheers, Bryan. Yeah, the price is one of the most attractive things, especially when talking about this Pentax glass vs. the price of the Fuji Glass. If you're cool with manual focus and don't need weather sealing etc, then they're such a great option. All comes down to the type of work you do!

The sharp center is great and truthfully the softer corners of the 45 don't bother me since they are not the main subject of the lens. Thank you for all the info.

The Takumar 105 f2.4 works quite well on the GFX (50S in my case). In terms of rendition of course not 1:1 like what you would get on a Pentax 67 but definitely in that direction. The only thing that was slightly annoying were a lot of chromatic abberations when you're shooting in sunlight. Can be fixed in post but a bit of a hassle. I adapt a lot of Pentax 67 lenses on my GFX and found that they work excellent and add a bit of that vintage feel.

Hi. Interesting fun! I just received my 100S so have not used it yet. However, I shot Pentax 67 and 645 for many years. My architecture set up is: Laowa 20mm Pentax 645 A 35mm x kipon tilt shift Pentax 645 FA 45-85 x kipon tilt shift Pentax 645 A 80-160 x kipon tilt shift (I only have 1 Kipon TS ) The FA 45-85 is supposed to be a little better than the A version but both are great. I cannot tell the difference between the GF 45-100 and the Pentax. I also use the Pentax lenses with the Cambo Actus. It is truly a digital view camera! The Pentax 645 A 35mm shifted 10mm at extreme edges is not so hot. 5 to 8mm seems good. Unshifted it is very good. The A and FA 645 45-85 is better thank the primes is the general consensus. It is heavy and has a giant hood (the FA) but has an aperture ring. A GREAT lens! The 45 645 does not have a good reputation. All the 645 primes are tiny compared to GF. The 150mm is s gem. If you don’t need autofocus and metadata, they are hard to beat. It was very helpful to see this as I have often wondered if I was fooling my self about how good the Pentax 645 seemed. The 67 lenses give much more shift, but are heavy. Thanks again for this review. I was quite concerned about the 100S and the 645 lenses.

The fringing on the pentax (@5:45) is very apparent in the middle of the frame around the seashell in the grass as well. Granted, that's at 100%, but the chromatic aberration isn't just confined to the edges of the frame. Looking at the shots of the garage I'm curious what aperture you were shooting at, and if some of the fringing might come down to defraction being worse on the Pentax than on the Fuji. All that said, I did just find myself liking the pentax shots more, but I'm kind of a vintage glass fan to begin with.

Old A series from Pentax are very similar in terms of color rendering and fringing stuff, even so with the full frame lineups. I’ve got an A 70-200 f4 for my k1, and it produces very similar images to ones in your video like warmer tones, red fringing and sun star against highlight. Just not as sharp. I think it’s because of the coating of that era. I’d say those glasses tend to age a lot slower with the medium format

Great commentary on a subject that's important to photographers, and creatives alike. I really enjoy hearing your insight and your thought process and opinion. Personally, I would love to try the GFX 100S, but it too expensive.....and I would need to get rid of so much gear to finance it.

I have. On the channel a couple months ago I did a video about the Mitakon 65mm lens for the GFX. In that I have some direct comparisons with the Pentax 67 shooting Acros, .

Probably not 'vintage' as such but the Canon 40mm EF f2.8 STM (with Viltrox adapter) is absolutely knockout on my GFX 50S. And for the £89 I bought it for is ludicrous value. Some vingetting but easily removed.

Love from the UK Kyle, great reviews pal. New to GFX, just got a 100s with the kit lens. The 75mm Pentax 2.8 sounds like a beauty, but I also like the look of the Mitakon 65mm 1.4... I appreciate these are different, but if you had to choose one for street portraiture... which would you choose dude? :) Ta x

Mitakon without a doubt. Much faster and much better separation. The Pentax could be cool with the Kipon 'speedbooster', but that's a pricy accessory.

@@KyleMcDougall Thanks pal... I'll take your word for it. The Mitakon looks a beast... One other question, there are cheaper adaptors on ebay, do they make a difference, as it's only really a tube? Oh, and another question, where were you shooting in the UK for for the garage shots with the old Robin Reliant 3 wheeler...? real 70's icon. Dangerous as fuck on the road mind :)

Many Pentax SMC lenses were made with Thorium (Which is radioactive) Unknown if the 45mm is one of those made with Thorium. But in all Thorium lenses, overtime they yellow creating warmer images. Again, unknown if this is one of those lenses or if the warmth is native to it. Just interesting facts about SMC

My helios 44-2 produces considerably warmer picture with green cast. And lower contrast, but thats to be expected. I use cheap vintage lenses for portraits because of bokeh and corner sharpness (lack there of). Canon 5d quite good in regards to short flange focal distance that allows to adapt many vintage lenses, but in my opinion it is not worth it. Mirrorless with rangefinder leneses on the other hand is supreme combination.

@Mudganon59 2 жыл бұрын
@@JasperBunschoten I have Ee-D screen from previous owner. I could buy split prism screen but it would be almost the same price i paid for entire body in the first place. 5d classic is bad in regards that AF microadjustment is only done in service center. My body has back focus with all lenses (hard stop on vintage lenses is out of focus, af confirmation on infinity is also off. On close range same error. 1-2mm of rotation after AF confirmation seems to nail focus) 5D classic doesnt have back button focusing, only focus and recompose with half pressed button type deal, so i shot wide open on manual anyway. Stopped down focusing error is noticable but only on infinity. Focus by wire is nice, i am focusing and quickly adjusting. Apart from that have no problems focusing on standard screen

@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't adapted any yet. There is a 'focal reducer' that's available, but it's quite expensive. Otherwise, most of the focal lengths that I enjoy the most (the 105), would be too long for the type of work that I do.

I recently purchased a Fuji GFX 50R camera body, Carl Zeiss 2.8/45 Tessar lens, and two lens adapters Fotodiox Pro CTS - EOS and Kipon EF to GFX. I went out to shoot and I couldn’t get the camera to take the photo when pressing the shutter release button. The LCD and EF work fine, and I’m able to make A/SS/ISO adjustments and see the results in the LCD, but I can’t get the camera to save the image. Any thoughts or suggestion? FYI - The camera and focus are set to M mode.

I love vintage lenses, I have some Nikon glass from the F series of their cameras and I use them on the Digital D series as well, mostly because I just like the smallness of the manual focus lenses and for me personally I prefer the feel of them on camera. Ie the 35mm F1.4 manual compared to the 35mm F1.4 autofocus, the manual focus is about 1/3 the size and is great little performer and a joy to use. Fuji introduced the 18mm f2 and 35mm f14 with the XPro1 and its amusing to think of these lenses as vintage character lenses now,compared to newer fuji glass, I mean the character fujis are not that old, but hey having choice is a good thing is it not.

Any medium format lens should work. GFX Sensor (in fact all medium format digital cameras) have smaller sensor sizes than 120mm film in 645/6x6/6x7 format. So as long as the flange distance is correct, projection will cover more than the sensor can take

@Leondrian

Cool of you to make these kind of videos! Really like both lenses and the Fujis really do have a lovely quality to them, as well as the Pentax 645. Especially if the Pentax 45mm isnt considered top of the line. I'm not tech savy at all but do you think make the test with one of the 50mp cameras would make the difference smaller between the lenses or do you think it will enhance the "issues". Or maybe the question should be phrased "Do you think the Pentax would benefit from the less pixel count of the GFX line?". How about adapting the 6x7 lenses? You can get many of them really cheap as well. Of course it will be much heavier and cumbersome, but as the GFX probably will take more of the center of the 6x7 glass, they will maybe appear even sharper. Thanks again for making so many really interesting and thought provoking videos. /Robert
@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers, Robert. Hard to say about the 50MP camera showing any difference (good or bad). But it is quite a bit less resolution, so maybe? As for the 67 glass, it is tempting, but quite a bit larger, and some options aren't as fast.

Technically I've seen many lens experts say that when a lens has a star in the highlights is a better lens. Also vintage lenses usually are created for good performance close to wide open, maybe one or 2 steps Max. It's not the same wide open or stopped down more than 3 stops
@ReclusiveEagle
@ReclusiveEagle 2 жыл бұрын
No this just means there are more than 8ish aperture blades. Even modern lenses star like this. Its more pronounced the more blades you have. But blade count has nothing to do with lens quality. Those experts are "reviewers" parroting things they've heard and have been conditioned into thinking certain things are better

Amazing, thank you for sharing. Here I am wanting to jump to Fuji gfx from canon r5. I was hoping to see the Pentax 67 105 but i can definitely see the direction with these 645 lenses. Good to know to just help jump ship sooner. Kinda off topic, since you do video production as well, how is the video of the gfx? Like as a ccam or rush type of camera. I shoot mainly a Komodo but sometimes shoot not so important things on the r5, would it be a capable camera like the r5 for such random things or even include a shot here and there and blend it with something like a pocket6k or Komodo with decent grading. Its hard to find good video from the gfx.

Hey Carlos, I haven't shot much video yet on the GFX, but I shoot all of my KZbin stuff on the X-T4 (which I've been super happy with), and the video I have shot with the GFX matches up and grades exactly like the X-T4 stuff. Both 10 bit 420. So yeah, I'd say it's more than capable as a C cam. I'm actually hoping to shoot a short doc with it soon, as a bit of an experiment, and will make a video about how I found it performed.

Does the softness off center of the 45mm not get better when you stop down a few stops? EDIT: The way you talked about shooting the 75mm wide open makes me think that you were maybe already stopped down on some of the comparison shots, so, I’m surprised.
