That sure brings back memories of baling hay on hot summer days in the 70s. My father would drive the tractor pulling the baler, and my brothers and I would be on the wagon behind the baler to pull the bales off the baler and stack them on the wagon. It was a BIG job and one we all dreaded. But what a sense of satisfaction when it was all done. Thanks for bringing that memory back, Joanne and Nick. I lost my father on Christmas Day in 2015, and I lost my oldest brother on Tuesday due to COVID. So for a variety of reasons, the content of this video was especially timely--and heartwarming. Again, thank you.

Excellent video, your father obviously treasured the baler for to be able to pull it out of the barn, couple it to the tractor, grease it, and bale around two hundred and fifty bales without a broken bale is nothing short of a miracle with such an od baler.

Joanna...you and Nick should be well proud [especially you]...and your Dad is well chuffed with a BIG smile! That MF 20 [along with the 15] launched around 1963 and my Grandpap John bought a new 20 in '64. We'd hook a bale wagon to the 20 and I spent three summers with bale hook in hand staking bales before going off to Uni. One tip for that 20 - grease it at the end of the day and then check the grease fittings first thing the next morning to see if you can pump more grease in. 200+ bales with no break downs - that 20 is an amazing piece of kit in good running order! Enjoyed the video - thank you. Cheers...

Hiya Joanna & Nick, Hats off once again to you both I... No hang on, hats thrown in the air, please!!! Very, very well done to you both, dad is not the only one pleased with your work Jo, Nick's look at you spoke chapters about how proud he was too. This took me back to the 60s when I played at helping the local, long-suffering farmers making hay. You remember the old saying, 'Make hay while the sun shines.' Well, you definitely did that and the sun could not have shone brighter for you. I was 11 in 1968 when we moved to Cyprus for three years in June. When we came back I was 14 and far more interested in girls than working on a farm. Dad was in the RAF. So again the farm has moved forward without a hitch, well done to you both for learning on the go, again. Stay safe, Steve...

@@DaleFarm you are always welcome dear lady, you deserve loads of praise for your work and the way you've both stepped up and taken on the farm as the living breathing entity it is. People tend to forget that the farm is a collection of livestock and hay fields, all living, all needing food and water and when necessary medication. Then add the campsite filled with people, and the farm shop helping to feed them. Each part is hard work for seasoned experienced workers, then add that you've had little or no training in most areas, and then look at your results??? WOW!!! Keep on keeping on you two, you've taken on a hell of a load, but you're doing better than anyone could have predicted, and judging by the smiles we see on your tired faces, you are enjoying it, enjoying taking on where dad had to leave it. Yes, he would indeed be proud, or as I believe, He is proud, of you both! Steve xx...

Seemed a little odd that you began on the third row in from the hedge. You were dropping bales where they were in the way for the next pass. That involved moving each one by hand. I used a baler similar to yours back in the early 60s. Spent most of the day praying that the knotters would go wrong. There’s nothing worse than some loose bales coming out the back. Hay baling is usually a hot dusty job, but I notice Nick is still wearing gloves. The best way to toughen up your hands is to keep them bare. A bale crook is a very useful tool. I’m sure your dad must have had one. We also towed a sledge behind with someone stood on it stacking the bales in sixes, before pushing them off the back. But you’re doing a great job Jo. xx

It's great to see a MF 20 at work again, I had one for years, it brought back a lot of memories from when I used to farm in North Yorkshire! and at last someone on you tube who rakes up the bits of hay left by the baler! it might not seem much, but it doesn't take much to make a bale and keeps the fields looking clean and tidy. When you are swinging the baler to its work position instead of pushing / pulling it put the cord from the pin in the cab and pull the pin from there while turning left and it should change over, or a 'chock' of wood in front of the wheel will do the same and behind the wheel to swing it back to transport.

Well done, the old balers were made in a time when tractors didn’t go fast we have a super 58 and need to be in lowest gear possible so you don’t collect too much in the chamber. Just enough and not too much is a delicate balancing act but you achieved it. You’re right your dad would be proper chuffed at you.

Thank you Dean, yes I quickly figured out that’s what was important was the rate of collection and I think I did an okay job especially considering it was my first go!!
@deanh37412 жыл бұрын
@@DaleFarm you did more than an okay job you did a great job. Mowing, tedding and baling for the first time is always a bit daunting. One for Nick if your baler moving from transport to work is like ours you don’t need to manhandle it into position. Check if you can pull the pin and twist it 90 degrees thus holding it out (or a bit of twine holding it out) then chock the front of wheel on the intake side then gently drive the tractor forward and it slides across then release pin to secure remove chock and you’ll be ready to go and no hernias!

Well done Joanna and Nick. The bale density looks spot on. The baler did a top job. Even though it's a 1968 (still a lot younger than me😁) the mechanical principal is exactly the same in the latest models. The only differences being they're quicker and a bit smoother operating. Glad it’s up and running, it just came back to me of the years 2013/14 when I made hay with the mf20b, it’s almost hypnotic. Credit to your dad for keeping it in good condition 👍

Great to see your hay getting baled ,and a old fashion baler .You could have put more of the rows together less to rake up then .Usually on the corner s we used to have to rake up.

Thank you Jim . We are pleased with how it went xx

Yes guys!! 💪💪 you seem to take everything in your stride, and go from strength to strength…..it’s admirable!! You’ve worked your butts off but there’s no feeling like it, when the forage is in and you know you can relax, the stock will be fine through the winter thanks to your hard graft. Lucky to have uncle Peter to hand, a bit of support and a few pointers always help.

Thank you so much! The next step is get the lambs successfully sold and get a new bull for the highlands . But yes working hard and accomplishing things is very rewarding xx

Well done guys that looked hard work but also very satisfying in the sense of following in your Dad's tradition. Also, for the actual physical effort made by you all. So, your Dad lives on through the Massey Ferguson. A true agricultural artefact still going strong. Thanks for sharing some sunshine.

Great Video Joanne, That baler is fantastic!! It's producing some lovely bales for it's age. I love to see old things still in working use. Sometimes you just can't beat the old machines. It reminds me of the saying "if it's not broke, don't fix it"...🙂👍🏻👍🏻

Thank you so much , yes I think having to Put nerves and fear to one side and get stuck in, is the key to growth and finding confidence. Iv had to do a lot Of that this year x

You both have done wonderfully well and can be very proud of yourselves indeed. Certainly brings back golden memories for me of the old harvesting. Two very minor pointers if I may as tips and not as a critic 1 a smidgen faster as that would feed the hay in a little better instead of it flicking out at the front and 2 if in time you can afford it, treat yourselves to a bale sledge, makes such a difference. But have a few wines / beers, raise them to the sky and say cheers to a very proud dad watching down on you both
@DaleFarm2 жыл бұрын
Thank you derek! We can definitely try that. We do have a sledge but it is stored somewhere away from the farm and we didn’t think it was worth the hassle to take it to one field ! 😊
