This was so satisfying to men, to finally see an actual working vintage Ninrod lighter in action. You see, when I was a kid growing up in the early ‘90s, I was obsessed with reading these books by an author named John Bellairs, specifically a series of books he wrote about a boy and old man who sort of go on supernatural detective adventures. Anyway, these stories were set in the early 1950’s and the old man is always smoking black-and-gold Balkan Sobranie cigarettes which he lights with his Nimrod lighter. The Nimrod actually plays a continually central role at other moments in the story, when it’s briefly used for illumination in dark places before it runs out of fuel. He describes the Nimrod lighter fairly specifically but for almost 30 years now I have ALWAYS wondered what they actually look like and how they actually work. So, THANK YOU.

Jeff, I believe when the inside of the screw slot is radiused like that, it is designed to use a coin. My guess is that it is meant to fit a dime or penny.

Hey Jeff, nice bit of oldies kit, but (you knew there would be one), if you grip the Nimrod in your right hand as you did and put your left thumb over the striker wheel with the rest of your left fingertips holding the liter... just pull apart briskly, and the Nimrod does all the heavy lifting for you. To paraphrase Ben Kenobi, "a more elegant liter for a more elegant time".Yes, I had one. I'm still working on my grooming kit from the late 50's. Thanks for the memories.

A homeless guy who comes into my work gave me one of these lighters and an antique De Lux Lighter from Canada last night. I always treat him with kindness and respect and he kicked me down w a couple lighters from his collection because of it. Turns out he's been collecting, repairing and selling lighters for over 30 years. Cool dude.

I discovered that if you hold the leather side on the left and pull it apart with your right while keeping your thumb on the wheel you can open it and light it at the same time.

Just picked one up at an estate sale for 25 cents (was 50 cents, but everything was half off the second day) 😜 I don't know for sure, but am reasoning that the lighter is designed so as while you're pulling it open you're also running your finger over the flint wheel (opening and lighting with one motion)

Yes, I have both items from my father who passed away in the mid 70s. He used the -- out of them, they are not pristine but still work. Still have his Beattie pipe lighter also. It threw the flame 🔥 into the bowl. Thanks for bringing up old memories.

Simply place your thumb of the hand pulling the silver end and as you open the lighter you will also strike the wheel, lighting the flame.

If you put your thumb on the wheel as you open it, the act of opening it also lights it.

I agree with the comments below probably a jammed flint you have to use a thin tool like a eyeglass screwdriver to sort of scrape it out, you take the insert out and unscrew the brass screw and remove the spring its in the tube, once you can see the tool your using under the wheel it should be free its more than likely crusty powder by now so be careful and work slow , once your done put a new flint in it and you will be good to go, flints can be bought at gas stations and grocery stores...

get yourself 6 inch piece of a guitar string , and use all the sized diameter strings that will fit in flint chamber, and jab it in and out and every so often turn it to dump out the rotted flint that is getting slowly poked into dust from guitar string. I have had that problem with many antique lighters with flints that get stuck in the flint chamber. its not gonna be a fast thing, slowly but surely it will get chipped out .
