Back in the 60s, I knew the entire group. Someone set off an army tear gas bomb in a venue in Holyoke, MA. We ended up at their motel that night and the next day. We stayed in touch for years after that. I had original polaroids taken back stage the first time they performed on American Bandstand with Dick Clark. My sister was closer to them, I moved away soon after meeting them. Will never forget the look on Q's face when he came out of his room without his glasses on and I beas just a few feet away. Am one of the few who saw him w/o his glasses. Boy, was he upset!!! LOL!

Thank you for sharing your memories of Q. I remember the first time I met him. It was 1989 and I'd been one of the announcers at WTAC in Flint. He had just produced a 4 song cassette and was on our talk show "Perry Wright & The Phone Zone." I wanted to interview him on my show and he showed up at our station with his manager Laverne Thompson. I couldn't believe I was actually meeting the first king of what is now called Garage Band music! Anyway, I recorded our interview in our production studio for airing the next day. He was very animated and funny, just like he is in this video. He's quite a live wire! Q is a real performer, and I think he lives to be on stage

Question Mark was easily Mick Jagger's match as a performer. "96 Tears" was one of the very best Garage songs of the '60s. I was in the Hollywood Music Industry working for a well-known independent record label, and later as leader of a top Southen California New Wave band. Our lawyers and accountants bled us dry. Question Mark lays the Music Industry bare.

Hi Ameri, It's so true! I found out through his Manager Laverne that the lady who created their costumes back when they were just starting out had connected them with Neil Bogart who convinced Q and the band to sign a contract. Bogart promised to make them rich and famous. They signed the contracts without reading over the small print that said he owned them and the rights to their music. It wasn't until the early nineties that Q finally got his rights to all future music he'd produce with the surviving members of the Mysterians. The same thing happened with Badfinger and their so called manager Stan Polley. Really sad.

96 Tears was recorded in the back of Art Schiell's Raymond Street house in Bay City Mich. It was a back porch at one time, but Art walled it in and built a recording studio well before the Mysterians recorded there. Quite a few bands recorded there. "In 1968 a band called the Popcorn Blizzard recorded "Once Upon A Time" and "Hello" with Art Schiell at his Raymond Street studio. The session is significant because the group's lead singer was Marvin Lee Aday, more commonly known as Meat Loaf." People should know it was a tumultuous time back then. President Johnson was getting us involved deeper into Viet Nam. Many up and coming bands never saw success because of the Viet Nam draft.

Question Mark (whose real name is Rudy Martinez...of Saginaw Michigan) was an eclectic figure, publicly stating that his soul had originated from Mars and that he once walked on Earth with the dinosaurs. The band took the name ? and The Mysterians, which was inspired by the 1957 science fiction film The Mysterians.

Stop that's to funny, he seems to talk go off and to another subjects and comes back.,he very intelligent, he brain moves at high speed, so thats why he goes off and comes back to the subject. prince definatly copied him no doubt. No doubt. If you watch video of him ninty six tears andyou can see prince stole his movement copied it but went a little further.bHe says truth about industry. somethimes when a person is very intelligent their brain moves at such high speed, thoughts feeling and its hard to express themself. you have to listen real close, or won't caught what he trying to say. maybe they did take name from sci fi movie. but he seems like real person not phony and he might be incarnated and its makes sound like he's crazy . Funny in his own unique way, but yes he was ahead of his time, the number 96is a poweful number its powerful psalm doesnt strike me odd it was a big hit. person likeing it can in moment of being hurt can take it actually feel like there telling a enemy off, yes hes ahead of his time and not trend setter, but hes head of his time as a individual. But how he got your number and called you is too funny, then said it's question mark like you knew him and he knew him forever is funny. i would believe he has strange gifts not bad but good intention, i born with a caul so i don't call anybody mayor or anybody in political nor anybody by that superior name. i just do same thing as he does, call by first name, come off like he does. I just call ask for by first name and say hi its me ,so they dont know it but do know them, . they may have never met me but i know them. I think dude got some spiritual strange gift. He he acts like , built like certain species, they have are able to get in a woman womb, this why its important for women to pray while she first pregnant so can't manifested long story. But they can, unstand Enoch, you understand why the husband got scared, but Enoch wasn't buy was gift from creator, he made him well in time great tribulations going on.understanding digging deep when reading it, its heavy stuff

Does anyone get an early form of Michael Jackson in this interview.... ??????

Go listen to any question mark album...on almost every song you hear jacksons "trademark" woooo...he also stole the moonwalk and didnt write most of what he said he did...and this surprises you?

This interviewer is ALMOST unbearable. [But thanks for posting, regardless, sincerely.]

@@MrThomascrownaffair JUST stopped watching halfway through, so, first off, kudos for such a quick response! But also apologies, I’m not trying to be pointlessly critical, it just seems like the questions didn’t have a whole lot of substance or research or hardly even forethought behind them. And I definitely have sympathy for anyone having to try to keep an interview subject like this on the rails (no easy task!), but at the same time, if he’s going off the rails *in an INTERESTING way*, I would think a good interviewer would also be better prepared to just roll with it. … Additional apologies if any of what I’M saying doesn’t make any sense either, I’m a little high as we speak 🤷🏼♂️ lol/smh

@yobhsiFehT Q and I were randomly hitting all the radio stations that day with a cassette of new tunes. On a whim, I thought I'd hit my old Alma Matter to see if they'd like to interview Q for their television program. I felt bad for the interviewer because he had only a few minutes to prepare..

I use to drive up to Clio and visit Q in his house. We talked about everything and I noticed that he didn't lisp. One day we decided to drive down I-75 to various radio stations in Detroit. On the drive he talked like a normal guy, but as soon as he met a DJ, or fans he did this entire effeminate routine! To answer your question - no!

Nope. Away from the public he talks and acts like a regular guy. I have no idea why he puts on this effeminate facade in public. Hope you enjoyed the interview.

This guy is delusional! He can't answer ONE question without going off on the "I can't tell you everything just yet", tangent. Look, pal. You're not mysterious, you have no 'musical revelation' to give to the world, you are not a great and imaginative singer and you sure as hell are no public speaker. Your Gay, ok, we get that. You're flambouant, ok, we get that. But you and your band are ONE HIT WONDERS! Do you get that?

Memphis Sommers Dude, come on, that's what makes him Question Mark. Duudee he had to keep the show goin, just like a character. Plus, 60s were the days they blew their minds away to distant lands. How do you expect a creative musician to be completely sane.

WHATEVER DUDE.

good response. I think he's really interesting, unique, and to be a lead singer and effemminite in the mid 60s took a lot of guts. Its part of his charisma. I love odd people. And yes, that's why he's ?....Memphis S, you sound like a B&W kind of guy. Labeling this, that, thinking you know with all certainly with no nuances, and complexities.

He got a high head. He let his name go to his head, where he doesn't want to answer questions, and be secret. Well age changed him, because now he obviously came out of the closet. The song was a great song, talking about 96 Tears, and I copied it back in 1967-1968, and so on. Of course he was bashful then, and it appears he is bashful and interviews are not his thing. I don't blame him because media always twists your words. I am happy for his success, especially his band who were humble musicians.
