While I do understand your desire to do everything possible to bring these forgotten pieces back to their original beauty, something like this school desk just needs some character left. The burn marks and perhaps even some writing (I love you) are simple reminders of the the children who used it. Just my opinion.

Although I think I would have preferred to see the old burn mark (a sign of what the desk had gone through in its history) the finished result is absolutely lovely. Amazing job. Thanks.

The basic design of this school desk is so elegant. I can see why you have been wanting one. I kept thinking that you would preserve the history of the children that used it over the years. Went to elementary school in the early 50s. Yep, long time ago! We had glass ink-wells and teacher would fill them with a premixed powdered ink. We black wooden pens with brass nibs. It was an art filling the nib with the perfect amount of that watery ink!! The paper was that cheep primary lined type. Too much ink and any pressure would result in a big wet blotch ! More often than not, with that cheep paper, the nib would get clogged with paper fibers. Instant mini paint brush. The result looked like a painters drop cloth. It was hilarious!!

As you know I turned up at the end of the premiere so had to go back to watch it from the start and I'll be watching it again before the night is out (after the great pottery throw down). I don't know what to say. The difference of night and day there. It's far more beautiful now than it was when it started it's life. You did a fabulous job there JK. I absolutely LOVE the brass inlay. Just ingenious. Totally elevated it. Well done and I love how well you improvised and the amount of things you tried to get rid of the stains. Thank you so much for this. A lot learned. Can I ask please, what brush are you using for the feed 'n' wax? I need to get one.
@Flippingdrawers2 жыл бұрын
awwww ever you are most welcome and as always very much appreciate your feedback and your kind words. As far as the brush, I can't find the exact one but look for a large round natural bristle brush. Those are the best and if you clean them with white spirit they are as new and will last a long time. Just don't get the cheapest ones as they shed.

Just over 60 years ago I was appointed "Ink Monitor" as I could be trusted to fill the inkwells without slopping it all over the desks - odd really because I always came home with ink stains on my fingers from dipping the pen too far! Did you consider simply flipping the desktop upside down as that would have given you a cleaner surfance to work with? Either way, an impressive job - gold star, go to the top of the class!
