Over the mountains and to the antique show...but wait, there's an estate sale sign! We're driving the Cascade Mountain loop en route to Spokane, Washington, but a sign diverts us to a farmstead in the middle of nowhere first. Will they have old stuff, good stuff, cheap stuff?
Turns out there's a little of both here! This is clearly an old collector estate, where RS Germany, French and English porcelains are bargain priced, Native American dancers are reasonable and buyable (but not the baskets!), the Fenton is cheap and a whole lot of other things are not. We talk about what is and isn't a good buy as we enjoy this unexpected stop!
Our real destination is Spokane, Washington's Custer's Antique Show, where Spokanites have shopped twice a year for nearly a half-century! This time we're shoppers rather than sellers, we get to tag along with some KZbin friends and visit one of their spaces (loving that Italian martini pitcher!). Nearby, a three-for-$20 booth brings us Disney, a 1970s Love placard, a Canada Dry bottle opener and a bunch of other fun stuff) that we can easily resell for triple…and then we find a 1930s Mexican tile table at a price we can’t resist!
But the real charm of this antique show is the presence of real old-time antique and vintage dealers who have amazing and beautiful things not commonly seen. A case of Moser, Kew Blas and other Art Nouveau antique glass sparkles alongside enameled spoon sets and Russian Niello cigarette boxes, while another table boasts a huge collection of scarce early 1900s Alaska studio photo prints. A Salvador Dali artist's proof, a 1930s trolling motor and a cool 1950s Buster Brown display figure exemplify why this is an antique show worth seeing!

I really want to be at places where you have a booth...would be so fun to buy from you that way. I LOVE Moser and Moser type...long story..thanks for showing us some. You are so helpful and kind and some people do not know and are not scamming or too high on purpose but still so grateful if one took a liking to and item in unknown area to watch where there could be tragic versus just learning along the way mistakes and even good idea to pay for help when buying a or hunting for a big big thing..I love that you are so good with big and little things and spendy and not so spendy and when a lady is excited about a cheese ball dish that maybe is in a too nice of a dish for that but ,,idk,, probably not a tragedy to use that way, you are just ice to her. Many things are lovely and ok to use however and strong enough...Thanks for such a beautiful drive through favorite areas, and another fun. learning and always witty sharing.

That petrified tree looked like a pudding stone which are found in Michigan… they are a conglomerate of various precious and semi precious stones that were ground together under the glaciers to make what looks like a “stone pudding” of the various stones… I have several along with some cool petosky stones which is petrified coral as MI was once an ancient seabed… 😉

@GrannysGarage. I thought the same thing! I live in SE Michigan and one of my favorite things to do is to go Rock Hunting. I have one good sized Pudding Stone, about the size of a soccer ball and boy oh boy it's a real beauty! And about a dozen or so smaller ones in various sizes and many Petosky Stones as well. My biggest being about the size and shape of a football. Not completely covered in the hex coral but still a pretty nice one. Do you live here in MI too?

Hi George: I've learned so much from you, and wanted to say "thanks!" I've been a collector since I was 18 years old, searching for household items to use ala "Vintage Living" and Bob Richter. I have swapped out better items over the years, and have decided this is a more interesting way to learn history. I've taught my daughter how to shop Estate Sales and Thrift Stores to furnish her house, and we've had a ton of fun doing it. We're going to NYC for my birthday, and plan to scour the Chelsea Flea Market. Have you ever shopped that one? If ever you're in Wisconsin, would love to show you some great places.
@TheAntiqueNomad

How cool! I'm excited that you share my perspective that these objects tell stories about real life. I'm so glad you and your daughter get to share that, I had that opportunity with my mom and it helped shape my tastes and interests a lot! I bought well in NYC when last there, not that market but it was surprising what you could find, given that certain designer items get top dollar there. Would like to get to Wisconsin next spring perhaps?

@@TheAntiqueNomad really like watching your videos they are fun .being a collector of prewar santa and Easter ,1930s Disney and other iconic comic characters for about 40 years since a kid .the problem with Disney stuff is there is just an abundance of made in China vinyl figures and cheap porcelain figures produced in the multi millions none of that will ever have value it’s the things that were made as toys the kids played with and got thrown away from the golden age in the 1930s that will continue to go up in value other than certain ceramic companies from the 30s 40s 50s shop Brayton ,American ,Shaw pottery Hagen Renaker the rest of the stuff is stuff that will not escalate in value whatsoever other than General toys that were discarded and still have the boxes stuff by Marx Disney tin windups linemar ect. Things dated 1964 Winnie the Pooh item that actually came out when the movie came out or an original jungle book Gund figures and other toys from the period predating the actual release 1966 versus 1967 when the movie came out and of course your steiff jungle book 4 characters that were produced in 1967 the rest of that stuff is pretty much far too mass produce rule of thumb as I’m sure you know anything made as a collectible will never be collectible as everyone has it in mint condition in the box.

Good evening, George! I liked that 1880s rocker. That butter dish, along with the other three matching table set pieces on the tray, would be a set I'd definitely be interested in buying. I have four or five table sets, now. Loved the pickled bamboo shelf. That acanthus leaf mini lamp is definitely my style. I'd hate to have to count the old kerosene lamps already here, though 😂 Those portrait plates were beautiful! I liked that Satsuma-style vase. I liked the barley twist candle holders Corene had there. That brass inkwell was a nice one. For some reason, I am really attracted to old inkwells. They're an item I don't mind having on their own, and not as a complete desk set. Those were really fun places to shop, and there were a lot of interesting items at both! Thanks for the take-along!

I think the European plate from The Old Curiosity Shop in England was marked with the price 21 _shillings_, not pounds. So, a unit of pre-decimal currency called a guinea: £1 and 1 shilling - as there were 20 shillings in a pound.
@KatieRae_AmidCrisis
@KatieRae_AmidCrisis Жыл бұрын
Shillings (x) and pence (y) were written in the x/y format. A price in round shillings, with no pence, wld be written x/- There were 12 old pence in a shilling (240 old pence in a pound). At decimalisation, that switched to 5 new pence in a 'shilling' (the term was phased out) - so, 100 new pence in a pound.

George, video from you is the best entertainment on KZbin! WhooHoo! It’s hard to believe that you’re already back in the State of Washington! I believe that the ancient variety of nomad stayed longer at each stop, while you seem to tear around the country like a madman. I thought surely you were going to be in your Kentucky area territory for a longer stay. But, alas, you’re not. (I made a payment your Patreon because I could NOT ever get my membership upgraded. Then, I looked for info on Patreon, i.e., whatever Patreon is or does, and where my payment is recorded, but I didn’t find either. 😱🆘😱🆘😱

FYI, you mention glaze on the black pot at 5:37. I believe it is not glazed but burnished on the shinier areas and left unburnished on the duller areas. By using a layer of a different color slip (watery clay) the pots can be more colorful like the red pot on the other side of the dresser. There are, of course, KZbin videos about how to burnish pottery.
