I seriously don't get the insult "is it your grandmother's dress?" In my case it is true, my gran was quite a fashionista back in the 50s, and we have similar bodytypes sooooooooo.....Also, when a person purposefully dressed vintage to look "like a grandma" is kind of a point

I've observed that many people don't seem very resourceful (because of current digital culture?) and instead want someone to give them a quick list of how to do things, specifically where they bought such and such dress from, etc. If dressing vintage is something you really want to do, a considerable amount of time needs to be invested: in research and study (Pinterest, Google, books, old movies), sourcing clothing, makeup and so forth; I really don't think you can avoid it. For me, research is part of the pleasure of wearing vintage.

There is that weird newlow-maintenance consumerism culture. People don't care how you make an outfit or how to find certain things. Instead under every picture of a legally acquirable object on the internet they expect to find working link to the online shop, and if it isnt there they would rather nag the content creator in the comments rather than google the damn thing.

I started wearing vintage when I was about 15/16 years so.....mid 1990's. Oh man, no one in my area of the US was wearing vintage. The looks I got were crazy. Back then I could go to a number of different vintage clothing shops and things weren't super expensive for original pieces from dresses to shoes to hats n more. I had an all vintage wardrobe even my coat. I stuck out back then n yes, gave me the I don't care what others think attitude. I felt like I was the only girl setting her hair in pin curls. Didn't have then what we have now (google, Instagram, et cetera), just followed old movies n my grandmother's old photographs n other old photographs. It was so fun n I still do it sometimes these days. You look amazing!! -XA

Me too! I was a student in the nineties and the charity shops were full of 40’s dresses, scarves and coats. I had men’s waistcoats and cravats as well. I hated most of the contemporary fashions. It was so cheap and easy. I see similar things to what had for over a hundred pounds now boo hoo!

To be fair, though, some people's features lend themselves better to vintage than others and I think hair is a great example - like, straight thin fine hair ain't holding no curl in 90% humidity, you know? So I think these questions keep getting asked because it's frustrating when what works for some people doesn't actually work for others.

To be fair, there 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 people with stick straight hair who lived in humid climates during the 30s, 40s, 50s, etc: they just had to suffer not having the most fashionable hairstyles during certain time periods.

I know this video is pretty old but I just wanted to say that after almost 3 years of constantly having an obsession with vintage fashion and watching/reading everything I can on certain celebrities, vintage/edwardian fashion & makeup I finally decided to buy some vintage inspired clothing! When I first tried on a outfit I was bursting with excitement and thats when I knew that this is what I wanted :) Its such an amazing feeling to be wearing what you love. Cant wait for the next couple years of improvement and looking back and cringing at myself! Yay!

This is actually really helpful. I have a friend that actually match your description about wearing things that she thought was vintage that actually not vintage. After she did some research, and tried and tried and tried, she realized that she actually like to see people in vintage clothing, but she dont like to wear the set herself everyday. She likes to be inspired at vintage outfits and hairstyle, and sometimes wear rockabilly outfit but putting modern touch in it with heavy makeup. She said herself that she is not authentic at all, but she certainly adore seeing people that commit to wear vintage everyday.

My hair is long enough to sit on, so it's not going to work for vintage curled styles. Sure, I could cut it, but then I would have to actually maintain the cut and keep up with trims and I just don't wanna. But my milkmaid braids are epic, each braid makes a complete circle of my head and I'm basically wearing a crown of my own hair!

An excellent source for every day clothes that are truly vintage or vintage looking, to help guide your style, is to go back and look for sewing patterns. Up until the 1900’s there weren’t sewing patterns. Seamstresses, women and housewives simply learned basic garment construction pieces and how to put these pieces together. Starting in the 1910s all the way up to the present, companies began producing patterns that individuals could purchase to sew their own clothing. Because The market for sewing patterns caters to the woman who could not have her clothes made for her or buy ready-made clothing, this is an excellent way to get a true sense of what the average person was wearing in your given time period. As a bonus the pattern makers put out the books yearly, so that once you find the pattern book source you can precisely identify what year this clothing was being sewn and in every day use.Keep in mind that sewing patterns typically reflected the prior years styles. Fast fashion with every season being completely different is an extremely new concept and really only began in the past 10 years. Also keep in mind that the ordinary person would take last year‘s fashions and rework them so that they reflected the next year style. One of the reasons why European fashion Didn’t change much after the war, or at least up until the 50s is that most countries still had rationing of fabric, buttons, undergarments, corsets, girdles, etc. so you couldn’t really change. However in America we were not as affected by rationing so post war industries switch gears and spooled up fabric, under garment and fashion manufacture. Happy thoughts

I have a couple of those and always get compliments :) I find that an easy way to find nice stuff (and this sounds awful) is secondhand shops close to old folks homes. I have found SO many lovely knit cardigans and shirts close to the homes. I love giving the clothing more life :)

This was an astonishing motivating video! I love your outrageous passion for the slow way, the reserch and the try and error in testing of your own possibilities. This is something, that annoyed me often at people, the lack of andurance. When you want to change something or to learn something new in your life, than you have to grow into it. There is no way to snip with your fingers and do it easy with magic. And sometimes the way to a goal is already an experience, worth taking. And I loved to hear that you have acquired so much selfconfidence, to ignore idiots at busses etc. Good for your health. Most of them just can't come to terms with their own existence. Thank you for being brutal honest! Thank you for being you!

Karolina Żebrowska I visited Haworth earlier in the week and they have the original portrait of the three sisters (painted by Branwell) and it's the first time it's been there in years! Ahhh, I love the Brontës🙌🏽❤

A guy here, and here how retro/vintage fashion happened to me. I switched from greasy kitchen staff job to retail in specialty items shop (way cleaner environment), and first, just for fun, I started buying dapper elements of clothing in charity shops because I was finding textures and patterns lovely and wanted to look my age at work (I am 24 and look like a teen because of babyface), I even got a fun collection of ties and bow ties or all sorts, materials and texture, and few lovely vintage waistcoats with functional pockets(very handy!). Then in few months I realized I wasn't wearing jeans for a while (they eventually got lost in depths of my closet) and I now wear hoodies only as pajamas, t-shirts only as underwear for shirts and so on.... I don't think I would be able to come outside in "modern" or casual clothes without thinking I look my worst. It just feels too unnatural now, haha. Other pros why I stick to it: Classy clothes and old fashioned material trousers do not seem to stretch as much around knees and other bendy areas as modern jeans do. Layers keep me in perfect temperature in both cold and warm seasons, wind doesn't break through as easy as it used to, ties prevent the air getting under my clothes - keep my neck warm so I often do not need any scarf most of the days in winter where I live. It suits many body types in men, doesn't look ugly if I have slightly unconventional body shape (my opinion, but modern clothes often require you to be in a certain shape to not look hideous on you, both men and women). Also it's actually easy to look good whatever you put on if you keep the same color palette (mine is grey, brown and beige) so I spend less time getting ready. Durable, stylish, easy, no fast fashion nonsense. I, of course, allow myself some cheekiness like converse shoes with a suit sometimes, but it's merely because I am into 10th Doctor Who, who is, obviously, timeless (pun intended) and an absolute fashion icon. Glad there are many retro clothing shops and brilliant charity shops in near town. Now I am 99% gained confidence to give away/donate my old wardrobe :)

Its so hard not to rush in ! I'm 30 so i feel like im "running out of time" which I know isnt true but especially when I see high school kids with full vintage wardrobes I admire but feel behind. I always liked many vintage styles but finally just exploring what I like thats not "trending" is nice but nerve racking

I have a question: How to manage to find vintage shoes? The shoes I see in thrift stores are always worn out and too old, and I rarely if ever find shoes in my size. Do you buy your shoes new?

The unfortunate problem is while I love 40s and 50s (I also like the first half of the 60s), it is not flattering on my body type without losing a lot of weight, corsets, surgery...😅

I'm not good at vintage. I feel better doing historical. HOWEVER... If you're looking for the perfect place to practice/wear your vintage and not stand out, Dapper Day at Disney World is SO popular. You could probably make friends and get some tips. Plus take cute photos! They do it at Universal too

I've watched a government film produced during WWII that illustrated the effects on fashion of the war. Reducing or eliminating pleats in skirts to save fabric, and restricting silk for military parachutes were two of the points discussed. I can't remember the name of the film.

My aunt who was born in the early 1900's had really frizzy curly hair and the only way she could deal with it was short styled, and when I first knew her she was wearing the current fashions - called vintage now.
